Sony is considering the construction of a new chip factory in Japan with the cooperation of TMSC. If this intended project, potentially costing billions, goes through the chip would likely be dedicated towards building chips for automobiles and camera sensors for Sony. TMSC meanwhile is apparently interested in the new project so that it can spread its manufacturing operations away from Taiwan itself and thus under the shadow of China.

I'm probably missing something about US taxes but how does a School District issue tax breaks? This is regarding that article about a Samsung plant in Texas by the way.

In Texas, the County and City both levy property taxes. A significant portion of the City taxes go towards that city's education fund.

India is attempting to woo TMSC, Intel and AMD to building chips in their country.

Tech Radar said:
According to a report in the Times of India, the Indian government has sounded out top chip-making companies like the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Intel, AMD, Fujitsu and United Microelectronics Corp to try and set up manufacturing base in the country.

Makes sense; India does well in the chip-designing sector(some of the enterprises mentioned, and others, have design centers in India, IIRC), but failed to set up a chip-manufacturing sector.

However, as the article headline says, they may have moved a bit too late; we are headed for a glut in the chip-building market, as there's a lot of chip factory projects around, and those that will be completed will be so in a small period of time. The question is when exactly the glut will hit the market.

It's going to be either feast or famine. If China decides to muck up Taiwan, and especially if SK becomes collateral damage, those new factories won't be enough to make up for all of the loss.

I think there would be more issues at that point then chip shortage

Intel's plan to expand and increase chip production in Chinese facilities is facing resistance from the Biden Administration, specifically when Intel shared with the government their desire to produce silicon wafers in a factory located in Chengdu, China starting next year. The Biden Administration reportedly strongly discouraged the move. What specific concerns the Biden Administration had weren't confirmed.

PC Mag said:
"Intel and the Biden administration share a goal to address the ongoing industrywide shortage of microchips, and we have explored a number of approaches with the U.S. government,” Intel told Bloomberg. "Our focus is on the significant ongoing expansion of our existing semiconductor manufacturing operations and our plans to invest tens of billions of dollars in new wafer fabrication plants in the U.S. and Europe."

Intel is reinvesting in a production facility in Ireland.

Toms Hardware said:
Intel began to upgrade its fab near Leixlip, Ireland in 2019. In a bid to install massive EUV scanners from ASML, Intel basically had to build the facility from scratch, which is why it will have taken it about four years to build and equip its Fab 34.

The new fab will enable Intel to build its advanced products using its Intel 5 node in Ireland starting next year and then adopt Intel 4 fabrication technology in 2024 to build even more sophisticated chips. Intel said that the new fab will double Intel's production capacity in Ireland, which will be useful for Intel's IDM 2.0 strategy that involves contract chipmaking.

In addition to Ireland, Intel plans to build a yet another manufacturing site in Europe to produce more of its own products as well as chips for third parties. The company was expected to announce location of the new site in 2021, bud had to delay the decision since new semiconductor production facilities costs tens of billions to build.

They are also planning on constructing another manufacturing site somewhere in Europe which will likely cost tens of billions to build as well.

Intel committing to invest $36 billion in future chip manufacturing in Europe, apparently to capitalize on Europes new domestic manufacturing priorities.

This'll include a new mega factory in Germany and new foundries, R&D and other facilities in Poland, Ireland, France, Italy and elsewhere.

China declares that the recently signed US' Semiconductor Bill or "Chips" Bill is 'anti-competitive.'

Which I think means it's Communism approved...

Yet for some reason China is bringing this up as a negative.

ZdNet said:
China, however, said the US bill would distort the global chip supply chain and disrupt international trade. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce last month said the Act contained provisions that restricted "normal economic, trade, and investment" activities of Chinese market players.

The ministry said it would monitor the implementation of the bill and adopt "strong measures" to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and China Chamber of International Commerce reiterated the Chinese government's criticisms, noting that the US bill would hold back global economic recovery and innovation.

The new law served to boost the US's advantage in the chip market and triggered unfair competition against "any country of concern", reported state-owned newspaper China Daily.

'any country of concern'...meaning China is concerned...and China is all that matters so the US better change its mind.

At least, that's how I read their concerns.

China is going to have a real bad time this generation just from their internal bullshit alone, pissing us off is just going to make it worse.
