BT tanks are really impressive compared to some others, but the setting itself does its best to cripple them compared to the mechs. So for their specific tonnage armored tracked vehicles from other settings where they are more relevant are better to illustrate the chart even in the few occasions BT tanks are more powerful.

I hate how BT felt compelled to copy 40k and go with that annoying "We can't recreate our technology" trope

You know, I'd love to read a series about a mercenary battalion in Battletech that uses highly specialized vehicles to do the same jobs that mechs do -- half the fun would be seeing the Cult of the Mechwarriors REEeee in outrage as these little tanks go around blowing shit up, heh.

Some of the ugliest combinations I've ever used in the tabletop game have nothing to do with 'Mechs.
-VTOL's mounting Arrow IV
-Large groups of tanks with Semi-guided LRMs
-BA and Infantry w/Light TAG

My players hated me after that. :devilish: 🎆🎆

On the QQ battletech thread, we came to the conclusion that Head Hunter missiles are specialty munitions for the Thunderbolt that use the punch table to determine hit location. So a VTOL with a single TB-15 or TB-20 and headhunter munitions would be very unpleasant for mech warriors to deal with.

Do y'all have favorite Battletech Tank Models/Designs?
The Gürteltier.

100 tons of sniping 'fuck you' and a monster in Alpha Strike with its 4-4-4 damage lineup for the standard variant with ECM and C3S, its ridiculous 12 armor pips and five structure pips with a 6" movement radius. The command version is slightly less damaging in the long-range bracket but gains flack, a C3M, Artemis, and an additional MG. Sure it's Jihad era, but... well, it's insane.

My favourite BT tank would be Regulator - fast hover with Gauss rifle, it complements the mechs just perfectly, but it can hold it's own just as well, even if a bit fragile.

Schreck PPC Carrier...for when you have to say "Hello" with lightning...LOTS OF LIGHTNING!!!!!

schreck_ppc_carrier_by_karlstreiger-dbdcpgh.png

There's a later variant, the II-X, which drops to 6xLight PPCs with 3xCapacitors...all tied to a targeting computer. It adds 15 tons to the beast (95t total) and increases to a heavier armor loadout as well. Tis FUGLY.

Also here's the Rommel/Patton Tank which will soon be Resting In Peace because... OMG Rommel! 😭

Yeah, it's a real shame. The same tank will still remain, but only known at the Patton. During discussions with TPTB, I argued that the R/P shares the same situation as the Lee/Grant of WW2. Unfortunately, someone else with a much larger financial hook pulled the decision their way. Wokeness & Cancel Culture infecting even our hobbies. So officially, it's only the Patton. But for a 35 year old fanbase, we will all call it the Rommel/Patton.

TPTB can make their announcements to satisfy some finance company jerk. The fanbase will just ignore them.

It's not 'woke' (and by that, I mean 'whatever the WASPs don't like' and not 'understanding history a bit better', because there is a difference), let's just say that the specter of the Nazis strikes again, especially given this environment.

Well, with energy weapons, the primary reason to have only one gun on a turret is moot. There are also thermal and redundancy benefits to having more than one gun instead of one bigger gun with energy weapons.

Most of the time they aren't using energy weapons though, At least in newer stuff they are generally using some sort of magnetic accelerator type weapon.

It really depends on the size of the ammunition. The reason you don't have multiple large guns on tanks is because it is impossible to store enough ammunition for multiple guns on a platform that is barely larger than the turret. If the ammunition could be shrunk to something the size of a soda can or machinegun bullet, then the problem would no longer be relevant.

A lot of restrictions are to do with wear and tear, cost, and material science, too. All of these were found out by real-life militaries when multi-barrel tank designs were experimented with in the 20th century, as with multi-turret designs.

If those issues are rendered moot, such as with the GDI Mammoth Tank in Tiberium Wars (railgun capacitor upgrade specifically), then there's no need to have a vehicle limited to one barrel or weapon.

A counter-reason to the above is if they want a vehicle to be light and used in certain ways, such as the Nod Scorpion Tank being limited to only one laser capacitor than, say, two or a rotary barrel.

Why do so many SciFi tanks have two or more guns on the turret? Aside from that being retarded its not exactly aesthetically pleasing either.
It's not that retarded even in IRL uses (see: AA vehicles needing insane RoF to hit fast aircraft, pre cold war warships having plenty of ammo). Which points to a simple rule - if low rate of fire or heat limit of rate of fire is a bigger issue than ammo reserve, multiple guns make sense. And in most game mechanics, it does make sense, even if it's not realistic.
For the typical game that runs on health points, not simulating system damage, advanced accuracy, ammo, crew stunning and so on, the IRL effect of first shot advantage is lost, while being able to pump out lots of dakka is rewarded.
Meanwhile in modern tanks , the tank has something around 40 main gun rounds and can fire them off in around 4-6 minutes depending on the specific tank and loader without needing an additional gun. Obviously tanks like this hardly ever get much use of their maximum rate of fire IRL as that would mean spending waaaay more time reloading than fighting.
So, why squeeze another gun into the turret to get more peak RoF that's hardly ever used anyway? Better get 10 more rounds for the first gun.
Note that around early WW2, when tanks used relatively small ammo for 37mm and low velocity 75mm guns, sometimes they had one of each and loads of ammo for each, but once high velocity 75mm+ guns became common that went away and ammo capacity went down to 2 digits despite that due to the big powder capacity shells needed for high velocity, large caliber guns.

Battletech's impressive metallurgy is to blame in this case. Its capabilities tend to be 'you need to wear it down because penetrating it is practically impossible' for the armor at BAR 9/10 grade (armor of the present day is considered BAR 5/6, which means a small laser goes right through it like a hot knife through butter).

The Guert's armament is either an MML-7, an ERPPC, and a Gauss Rifle (standard config) or an MML-7 with Artemis IV FCS, an ERPPC, and an LBX-10 (command version) for the turret with a few MGs to keep pesky infantry not in BA away.

In addition, Battletech rarely has multi-turret tank designs, and those are almost entirely in the super-heavy field anyway.

Track Ground Performance:;
Armed with an autoloading caseless ETC 140mm smoothbore, a caseless ETC 8.75mm MMG (basically Black Ops 3's 'Man 'o War' turned into an MMG) in a coaxial mount, two 6.8mm ETC LMGs in RWS units, an ETC 15.5mm (based on the FN prototype) HMG, and eight LAMS using UV pulse lasers (because hypersonic missiles got to the infantry level in-setting). Oh, and it has advanced computers to run all this with four people. Powered by a high-powered ceramic engine designed for liquid natural gas instead of Aviation fuel because the pricetag of oil skyrocketed by the mid-21st Century (to the point that a tank of gas went from somewhere in the 60s to somewhere into the 500s in terms of USD), only the Chinese-dominated Pan-Eurasian Sphere uses Aviation fuel in their military vehicles due to exploiting the Siberian oil deposits.

Utilizes stealth features as standard (meaning it's hard to detect, hence why the tank is laden with so many sensors, especially active ones) and can move at a brisk 56.3 km/h offroad... and has limited river fording capability. Also can go a surprisingly vast number of locations due to the ground pressure being ~8.16 psi (or, in metric, ~56.16kPa). Not bad for a ~64 metric ton MBT.
