New STO event stuff inbound.

Yep we get the Red Angel Suit. Time to bump of Jm'pok as a kid I mean before he challenges Martok. Yeah that's the ticket.

Nice, been looking forward to the next episode ever since I got back into STO a few months ago. The mission rewards for the new content have been awesome, looking forward to seeing what happens. The fact we're apparently going back to Pavo is interesting (fingers crossed for a "shoot a big psi beam from Pavo at people" kit module or ship device).

Speaking of getting back into the game, I've decided to start a new fed captain, a science officer this time so I have one of each (plus some various KDF, Rom and Dominion alts from recruit events that I'm slowly gearing up). Thinking of building her as a beam broadside captain using either phasers or plasma, still deciding which to use. My Fed engineer was supposed to be a phaser broadside build as well, but then I happened to get a hold of this bad boy, and it's so comically OP that I pretty much had to switch over to a forward firing build to use it.

Yep stuff is good now. I just wish we can get a Terran Recruit event. I want to make a legitimate grey area character that the Feds see as totally gray.

I doubt that will happen, most of the other recruit events have been designed to just fit in alongside the existing tutorial (save for the temporal recruit, but that was when they added all the TOS stuff that was independent of it). A Terran recruit event doesn't really fit into that frame.

So, having just finished shift on my Klingon recruit, it occurs to me that STO is doing a much better job hiding whatever the big plot is so far, compared to Victory is Life where the twist was "foreshadowed" in Doomed to Repeated, but they did it so badly it was obvious what the big secret was.

Technically the Klingon civil war had the same issue where it was obvious from minute 1 the solution would involve yelling about honor and then stabbing Jempok, but that's more understandable because "yell about honor and then stab someone" is how how Klingons solve all political problems, legal problems, marital problems, etc.

But with Terran Gambit, so far we have mysterious planet cloaking device + Ilia + Pahvo (mirror or not) + whale probe?? (teased on twitter) + Johnathan Archer (also hinted at on twitter) = terrifying superweapon......and as lifetime trek fan, I have absolutely no idea how any of that is supposed to relate to anything else.

Edit: And it turns I built a new fed character at the exact wrong time, they're redoing the standard fed tutorial next month. Which I think is good, the actual narrative of that opening doesn't really line up with the current game, though I don't think they can fix a lot of the issues in the current narrative with this anyway (most specifically, the fact that several parts of the temporal war arc start or have answers in the TOS Fed missions, so if you make a 2409 fed you will not have context for why those events happened).

I think the Terran Emperor might be William Decker. Just a hunch for now.

Class of 2409, Report for Duty! | Star Trek Online

Stuff on the new tutorial. Gonna be honest, I think it's a mistake. The current tutorial certainly has a problem with going from fighting the Klingons to then suddenly fighting the borg, but going from that to doubling down on the borg sounds worse.

1. We're probably going to lose Captain Taggart's badass death, in place of a much lamer one where he just gets assimilate.

2. The game already has a rather glaring problem where the Borg attack, assimilate an entire colony and establish a foothold in federation space, something that should be all means be a major, major problem. It's never mentioned again and as soon as you get back to ESD you're sent off to go check in a freighter having engine trouble. To say this mood shift is.....an understatement, and I can't help but think that putting even more focus on the Borg is a mistake, because it will only make things worse.

3. It doesn't address the biggest issue with the federation playthrough, namely the fact that several key bits of information are only revealed in the TOS Fed tutorial and mission arc, which regular fed characters do not have access to.

My personal head canon is the Federation mobilizing every ship near the Vega Colony and effectively glasses the planet. One Federation ship can do that but a task force can do it way quicker.

So, new stuff just dropped, and the first of the new episodes is bugged and can't be completed. Nice testing process there, Cryptic.

Went through the new tutorial, and my prior concerns were not only correct, they actually understated the issue. Targgart was just beamed off and assimilated, and there's no particular reason the Borg wanted him in particular (despite Janeway implying otherwise), rather than his very heroic sacrifice the first time. And then later on you even rescue him on Vega, which I really don't like because it comes across very selfish, like Taggart only gets rescued because we know him, while the assimilated colonists are just out of luck.

They also kept the bit where Flores was gushing over the Vesta, which I've never quite followed why they bothered doing. "Hey guys, look, it's a mediocre T5 science ship that shows up this one time and then is never mentioned again, nor does it play any role in the story of this game ever again at any point". Like, at least having her admiring say, the Enterprise F that's under construction or something like that would have story relevance.

I think they were alluding to the USS Vesta in the lore. As it did do a toon of things in the Lore. But that is just prequel to STO stuff. As to Taggart I think he might show up in future revamped content. Since Cryptic is redoing a lot of old missions.

Risa, Where All Your Dreams Come True! | Star Trek Online

Summer event is nearly here, and with it weeks of fun summer events like surfing*, dancing, hang gliding*, building sand castles, etc.

And as always there's new gear this year, with thos year's equipment being themed around.....Andoria. The frozen ice planet that is quite possibly the least Risa like place in existence.

I'm assuming we're getting Vulcan themed gear for winter, as the holiday's tie in so well with Vulcan and their well documented love of cold temperatures and fun.

It is like the Vulcans and the Andorians took a bet. Then wondered a week later what the fuck they had agreed to.
