So...NATO is expanding...

Your thoughts?

Finland and Sweden? Anyway, I consider this a HUGE geopolitical victory for the West, along with of course Russia's extremely extensive bleeding in Ukraine. It's a huge shame that the Russian and Ukrainian peoples have to suffer, of course, but that's what happens when Russia has an authoritarian dictator who is obessed with Russian nationalist ideas of "regathering the Russian lands"! :( Germans previously suffered as a result of Hitler as well, with millions of Germans literally dying as a result of Hitler's wars.

All Russia had to do was not try to be the Old Soviet Union. That is all. We gave them an Olive Branch at the end of the first Cold War. But they refused to Get Good. So now in Cold War 2. Countries around the world are beginning to give Russia the sideways glance. When this second Cold War is over. Russia will not get the same Olive Branch that was extended the first time. This Time they will have to earn their way back into the good graces of the west through actual work and deeds. I for one welcome any country that decides it wants to stand against Russia and China. Now if only India can get it's head out of it's ass and pick the right side.

A total creep
Isn't Finland bound by some treaty or other to be neutral?
Or am I mixing up things, e.g. Aland Islands perpetually demilitarised?
Russians will immediatelly see, with their minds eye, massed armoured divisions backed by tactical nukes on their Karelian border ... I have family in Sankt Peterburg and I know how their minds work ...

No. This development proves that the Ukranian crisis leading to the Ukranian Operation is a NATO provocation aimed at expanding the agressive and anti-Russian organisation.
Russia threatened to invade and nuke them....
So they called the bluff after seeing how horrible the Ruskies are doing in Ukraine.
This is no one but Russians fault.
NATO isn't an aggressive organization. They never have been. They are purely defensive. If you look at anything about them.
A country has to willingly want to join. The country then has to vote on it if it joins or not.
If it was aggressive why is Serbia, Austria, etc not part of it?
And Ukraine would never have actually been able to join NATO unless they have up claims in the Donbass and Crimea

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.
On paper they makes a good addition to NATO but what made them as they are has dwindled when Sweden already fucked itself with their own policies recently while getting "enriched" by migrants.

As for Finland the Russians might just cut out trade with them as neighbors. I hope they have an alternative for their sake.

See what I mean?

A lot of Europe's been relying on Russia for their energy needs. They need an alternative if they want to keep antagonising Russia.
You do remember that Germany is building an off-shore LNG terminal, and Poland was given US civie nuke tech?

They may not help immediately, but alternatives to Russian energy are in the process of being put into operation.

As well, I think Finland could ask Norway for help, given all their oil reserves and production capacity.

Actually, Finland also *exports* a decent amount of electricity to Russia. And they've been winding down what they import for about three weeks now, because they actually expected this and prepared for it.

Finland doesn't rely on Russia for any of its electrical needs; it can supply itself just fine. The reason for the current setup is just convenience/cost.

The "Stupid Europeans rely on Russia" meme really only applies to Germany. And they're widely acknowledged even among the rest of the EU as...special...in that regard.

Besides, Finland and Sweden both have been working alongside NATO for decades now and both have high quality militaries. So now they're getting the mutual defense guarantees in return, given concern over where certain EU countries *cough* Germany *cough* might weasel out in the event of a crisis.
