Britain Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, has been assassinated

So far, it seems a suspect has already been apprehended by the police. No further details have been released as to the identity or motivations of his killer (understandably). The victim was assaulted whilst holding a constituency surgery (essentially where an MP speaks to their constituents and hears out their concerns).

To paraphrase the BBC article as to his character:

"A Conservative backbencher for nearly forty years, the 69-year-old father of five entered Parliament in 1983 as the MP for Basildon.
He achieved totemic status within the Tory party for holding the seat in 1992, but switched to nearby Southend West at the 1997 election.
Raised as a Roman Catholic, he was known politically as a social conservative and as a prominent campaigner against abortion and on animal welfare issues.
He was also known for his championing of Southend, including a long-running campaign to win city status for the town."

Her Majesty has lost a good servant today.

A few days ago, Her Majesty agreed to make Southend (Sir Amess's constituency) a city. This was something Sir Amess was incredibly passionate about, if not his life's work. I feel there are far worse ways to honour a man. Indeed, by this, his legacy will be a long reaching one indeed.

Indeed. It's a bit of a late update, but the man under arrest is called Ali Harbi Ali, a twenty-five year old son of Somalian immigrants, and this was in the name of Allah.
