RWBY Volume 9 has a release date & trailer now.

However as can be seen from that announcement and the trailer not being on Rooster Teeth's own channel, it's going to be a Crunchyroll exclusive and won't appear on RT's own site for another entire year, RIP anyone who still holds a Rooster Teeth First (more like Last now! Hasn't it already been like two years since Volume 8?) subscription. RT itself must've known this move would be received extremely poorly by their fans to say the least, because they're now begging people to not just pirate V9. Doubt that's going to work though, has it ever actually worked for any company in the last 20 years or so? Just a quick glance at how people are reacting on RWBY-related subreddits (including the main one) for example will show a lot of them being royally pissed, or openly joking about & justifying pirating V9 now.

Silver lining, between this and the (similarly Crunchyroll-first) Ice Queen anime, it does feel like Warner Bros-Discovery is fishing around for buyers for RWBY before they shut down Rooster Teeth. So even if the latter finally collapses under the weight of its scandals and decline in quality over the years, the RWBY IP itself might survive or get rebooted by Crunchyroll, or whatever other studio managed to take it off the sinking ship in time.

RWBY is probably the only thing keeping RP alive now sadly

Pretty much what I thought, it seems to have basically become their flagship IP since the 13th season or so of Red vs. Blue at the latest. Certainly pretty much every other big animated project they've tried their hand at seems to have failed disastrously - Gen:Lock, the later RvB seasons, Nomad of Nowhere have all gone nowhere. I guess they still have things like Achievement Hunter, but that's also in severe decline (a quick look at AH's channel going back a year tells me that they seriously struggle to crack 100k views these days, in fact it seems like half their content can't even crack 50k now - even a middling indie channel focused on a gaming niche like Residence of Evil can do better than that) and hardly seems like something that'd be worth keeping RT as an entire studio in its own right around for WB-Discovery besides.

This development sure makes it look like they're (or WB-Discovery at least) going to get rid of RWBY soon - I can't say it makes sense to push your biggest IP off of your own website onto a competitor's and then let them lock it behind a year long paywall! - and if Crunchyroll or whoever else ends up buying it, that's probably curtains for RT right then & there, might as well just break up/sell the company for parts and dissolve the remaining dross. Probably for the best if you're a huge RWBY fan though, as I said, selling RWBY off means the IP can survive in someone else's (frankly probably more competent) hands even if RT tanks soon like it looks like it's going to.

Didn't they fo that woth Gen Lock on HBO Max?
But yeah AH went down around the time they stopped AWHU and the whole Ryan controversy.
RvB went down I would say later but it was on downward after halo 4/5.

RT only has RWBY to hold them up

HBO Max at least is also owned by Warner Bros-Discovery, but Crunchyroll is owned by Sony. So it does seem like WBD isn't even interested in holding on to RWBY (just without Rooster Teeth) and is looking for someone to take it off their hands altogether.

I'm sure RT is getting some money out of this hard bargain, but I doubt it'll be enough to stave off David Zaslav's ax for any more than the absolute shortest term. We've got to look at the bigger picture, Crunchyroll's already hosting all of the RWBY episodes and not only hosted/licensed the recent Ice Queendom anime first but also seemed to care way more about it than RT (obviously SHAFT made it, Crunchyroll not only hosted it first & did most of the advertising for it, I've seen barely any attempt at promoting it by RT themselves and said attempts came chiefly from Weiss' VA - unsurprising since it focuses on her character); Warner Bros-Discovery has a very purge-happy CEO in charge right now who's axed plenty of other (and in many cases, arguably better) media; and Rooster Teeth itself has been battered by a huge slew of scandals in recent years that's rendering their brand quite toxic.

The terms of this deal are also much harder on RT than the Ice Queendom deal seems to have been, I mean really, a year of exclusivity to Crunchyroll? Further the 'Boring' Geoff post I linked to also mentions that V10 hasn't been greenlit, where before new volumes seem to have been greenlit pretty quickly (IIRC in the case of 9 it was greenlit alongside 8 immediately after 7). Again it's looking like even if V9 does well, that'll just be used as proof to convince Sony/Crunchyroll to buy the IP so WBD can cash out and dissolve Rooster Teeth.

Which makes sense. Because they probably want to keep RWBY alive

For sure, I think the key takeaway here is that RWBY is viable without RT, while RT isn't viable without RWBY. And honestly, getting RWBY as far away from RT's failtastic ways & absolute mountain of scandals as humanly possible is probably the best thing that can happen to the IP right now.

Of course that may mean recasting of characters, but that is honestly fine as long as it fits.
RWBY can survive

Why? Rebooting will just destroy it
I guess it depends on who buys the IP, but if it's the Japanese for example (SHAFT or otherwise), those guys have shown that they're really only interested in the events of the Beacon era. IIRC poor ratings/sales was part of the reason as to why it took the Japanese forever to get around to dubbing anything past V4 (and when they did get around to doing that, it sold extremely poorly in Japan despite doing OK elsewhere), Ice Queendom was set in the time of the early volumes because the Japanese were confused by/uninterested in what came after (although they tried to phrase it nicely) and the manga have always stuck to Beacon or the trailers - I don't think they even got around to V3.

And realistically, if Crunchyroll buys RWBY (seems to be the likeliest outcome TBH) I think they'll probably just license it while letting the Japanese produce. Not only did they apparently have a positive experience with this setup in Ice Queendom, but they must know by now that every time they've tried their hand at making shows themselves it went so horribly as to become a meme (hello, High Guardian Spice & Ex-Arm).

Apparently RWBY's ratings were at their peak in V3 and never quite recovered from the big drop after that, so rebooting could also be done by the new studio in an attempt to recapture these lost viewers who dropped out after Beacon's fall.

Well, isn't that interesting; the show stated going downhill in viewership after the farce that was the Vol. 3 finale.

I personally stopped watching the show at that point, because of how stupid they had made the plot and plot hooks in Vol. 3.

Here's hoping CR or SHAFT can do a better job with a reboot/AU.

How was it a farce? That was the planned ending for volume 3 since day one
