Top Russian General Commanding the Special Operation in Ukraine Has Been Replaced. After taking over in October, the 'ruthless' General who commanded Russian forces in Syria Sergei Surovikin has been replaced by one of the original planners of the initial Special Military Operation Valery Gerasimov who was previously Russia's Chief of the General Staff in their Armed Forces. It's suspected this might be due to political reasons as opposed to leadership performance.

A Russian military vessel was struck by Ukrainian Artillery Fire somewhere in the Dnipro Delta Yesterday.

Eighty Russians Were Allegedly Killed in a Ukrainian HIMARS Strike Thirty Kilometers Behind the Frontlines in Occupied Luhansk. Apparently a majority, if not all of the dead, were civilian contractors building fortifications and infrastructure for the Russian military forces. Apparently the contractors were lodging at a school when struck.

First Confirmed Loss of a Russian SSO Officer? Rest in Peace Lieutenant-Colonel Boris Mikheev who was apparently killed way back in early August. Killed in the same action was apparently two other Majors.

Ukrainian Krab Self Propelled Gun Was Struck By Two Lancet Loitering Munitions with the Second One Apparently Causing an Ammunition Detonation that Destroyed the Vehicle.

I've seen speculation that considering that there was a very sudden mass departure of Russian warships from the black sea bases, this may be a reshuffle of the command structure to manage a very large incoming offensive.

It does look that way to my mind. Politically speaking, a grinding stalemate is unacceptable to the Russian people and the corridors of the Kremlin, so Putin wants to make one last throw of the dice to try and win this war in one fell swoop.

He’s going to try and take Kyiv again. What happens when this unhappy sea of miserable conscripts and aging Cold War kit slam into Ukraine’s crack divisions is anyone’s guess.

lol

Ukraine is the one full of miserable conscripts. Russians OTOH have been training up for months.

This has been a carefully prepared thing. First the Russians pulled back to defensive lines, then laid out fortifications and the missile campaign, now soledar has fallen. I think this phase will go to cut the rail lines in Donbass, either in Sumy, Zaporazhie, or perhaps both.

This will set up the next offensive later in the year.

I think we are seeing three fronts, each one with a theatre commander with the Russian COS coordinating each.

Yeah, those conscripts who have war experience from 2014-2022 and those who trained in UK and USA must be especially miserable, not like the Russian conscripts with their expertise in sweeping the barracks or something, because check out any interview with them, they get to fire less rounds for their whole training than the typical US gun enthusiast spends on a fun trip to the range.

Soledar... Why does Russia have to stoop so low as to celebrate grand victories over taking parts of a town with pre-war population of 10k?

It is not a question of "conscripts or no conscripts", it is a question of motivation.

Majority of Ukrainian "conscripts" are territorial defense units, and these can be incredibly effective:

Another video of Russian conscripts showing how well they are trained...
Well, they are trained well enough to know how screwed they are.
Though most of us would probably realize that a ditch with frozen over mud is not a "prepared position" without any training at all.

Long Thread by ChrisO on Wagner And the Operations They've Engaged in Around Bakhmut and Soledar and Other Areas. Reportedly they've suffered 4100 deaths and ten thousand other casualties in the past five or so months assaulting these areas and require 25-30,000 troops just to replenish losses and two or three times that number in assault troops to overwhelm the Ukrainian defenses in those key cities. However the supply of prisoners is drying up so now Wagner is potentially planning on employing Penal Battalions of 'Refuseniks', soldiers who declined to serve in Ukraine and were arrested for it.

AS90's? Fucking hell, Russia is in for a bad time now. 😮

Russia is being bled dry in not just manpower but equipment, too; meanwhile, everyone is throwing every and anything at Ukraine -- even goddamn Iran, albeit they're selling munitions than giving them. They're alienating everyone, even countries who once had friendly ties to either them or as part of the Soviet Union.

And given that Iran has been supplying Russia as well? I get the feeling they're feeling a little betrayed, haha.

Iran: "It's just business."

I've been watching a few anti-war Russians on YouTube, and basically Russia's plan is;
  1. Arrest those refusing to serve
  2. Send them to a gulag prison
  3. Have Wagner recruit these prisoners "one way or another"
  4. Have objectors sent to the front lines anyway
The one I've been watching basically fled to Canada, and while he was gone the authorities turned up with his papers to his family's residence: as he didn't receive them in person, it's not legal for them to conscript him.

His friends weren't so lucky.

One theory is that these Iranian weapons showing up there are an involuntary donation. Namely, confiscated by some West aligned faction weapons destined to Iran allied Houthis or Hezbollah.

Actually what's interesting about this is that it might not actually of been interdicted whilst heading to the Houthis like earlier shipments of Iranian munitions turned out to have been.

So it could be a third party if Iran isn't because being so obnoxious as to supply both sides.

Or as i said, it could also be for Hezbollah, which is known to stockpile lots of Iranian rockets.

If Iran supplied Ukraine willingly, they would have to assume getting caught doing so, due to such rockets generally not having 100% reliability and being fired at enemy positions, inevitably one ending up unexploded enough to get identified by Russia.

Another possibility is that it's a third party resale... which may or may not involve some corruption.
