These are known as Forward Base Ships and are often deployed near places where Iranian supported Conflicts are Taking Place like with the Houthi Uprising in Yemen and in Support of the Assad Regime in Syria. They are also handy for maritime surveillance since they are often located just off of popular shipping lanes. The Guards apparently have three of these ships in operation with one replaced last year after it was mysterious struck by several Limpet Mine whilst in the Red Sea.

Iran seizes two Greek Tankers laden with Oil Destined for the United States via Helicopter borne IRGC Forces whilst in transit through the Persian Gulf. Both incidents reportedly occurred in international waters and the tankers were Greek flagged vessels, with the crews taken captive by armed Iranian Guards forces. The ships had recently departed from the Basra, Iraq Oil Terminal. Iran stated the ships were seized due to "unspecified" violations.

This was purportedly done in response to Greece seizing the oil from an Iranian tanker in Greek waters days earlier, in violation of EU Sanctions Aimed at Russian in Regards to its Invasion of Ukraine. At the time of the seizure, the Iranian tanker was flying under a Russian flag with numerous Russian crewmembers on board. Around 100,000 barrels of oil was seized from the vessel. Iran vowed punitive action.

If Iran had a shah again, it wouldn't need them, for the same reason it didn't need them back when it did. An Iran under shah has no reason to play ball with all the local islamists to convince them that the Islamic Revolution is the biggest and the strongest branch of islamism, and once Iran is not doing that, neither America nor Israel have such a problem with them anymore. Politically Iran would become some mix of Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Though even an Iran that isn't led by religious wizards could still support various Shi'a militias in its neighborhood as a means of exerting influence there, no? Having access to the Mediterranean Sea through Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon would still have value for Iran in such a scenario, no? As would access to the Indian Ocean through Yemen.

But what do they need such "access" for? Its land routes to ports through pretty large, unstable areas with seriously bad infrastructure, not really good for much beyond smuggling.
Meanwhile any less spicy cargo, especially if they didn't pick fights with western countries and their clients, they can just load on a ship in their own nice ports and move that around cheaply and quickly, including to Med through Suez.

Yemen grants access to jack shit except a way to screw with Saudis, they have to send stuff to there by ship to begin with.

Iran recently denied accounts made by the Israelis in regards to an Iranian Plot to murder Israeli terrorists in Turkey that was revealed by Turkish Security Forces and called it an Israeli Plot to destroy the relationship between Iran and Turkey.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Thursday thanked Turkey for thwarting an alleged Iranian assassination plot against its tourists in Istanbul.

"We're not only talking about the murder of innocent Israeli tourists, but also a clear violation of Turkish sovereignty by Iranian terror," Lapid said.

Media outlets in Turkey have reported the arrest of eight people allegedly working for an Iranian intelligence cell that planned to kill Israeli tourists in Istanbul.

Israeli Armed Forces Shot Down Multiple Drones Reportedly Belonging to Hezbollah that were allegedly approaching Israeli owned gas rigs in the Mediterranean Sea.

Hezbollah confirmed the launching of the drones while Al Jazeera reported the drones were "unarmed." One of the drones was shot down by an Israeli F-16 Fighter and two others were intercepted by the Barak-8 Air Defense System mounted on the Corvette INS Eilat which if true, would be the first successful engagement of that system against hostile targets.

Back in February the Royal Navy Frigate HMS Montrose intercepted Iranian aligned speedboats smuggling cruise missile and surface to air missile parts, presumably to Yemen.

The seizures, which occurred on 28th January and 25th February 2022, took place in the early hours of the morning. HMS Montrose’s Wildcat helicopter, equipped with state of the art radar systems, was scanning for vessels smuggling illicit goods. The helicopter crew spotted small vessels moving at speed away from the Iranian coast.

During the February interdiction, United States Navy destroyer USS Gridley supported efforts by deploying a Seahawk helicopter to provide critical overwatch during the operation. On both occasions, the Wildcat helicopter pursued the vessels and reported back to HMS Montrose that they could see suspicious cargo on deck.

A team of Royal Marines approached the vessels on two Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boats before securing and searching the vessel. Dozens of packages containing advanced weaponry were discovered, confiscated and brought back to HMS Montrose.

The seized packages were returned to the UK for technical analysis which revealed that the shipment contained multiple rocket engines for the Iranian produced 351 land attack cruise missile and a batch of 358 surface-to-air missiles.

The 351 is a cruise missile with a range of 1,000km. It is regularly used by the Houthis to strike targets in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and was also the type of weapon used to attack Abu Dhabi on 17th January 2022, which killed three civilians.
