Constantin Films, the German film producer of quality films such as Polar, Monster Hunter and the Wrong Turn reboot announced a release date for their upcoming Resident Evil film which will reboot that franchise. They also produced the previous Resident Evil franchise of films, though with a completely different director there's a chance that we can finally escape Paul W.S. Anderson's action filled semi-autobiographical saga of his wife Milla Jovovich and her adventures in the post-apocalypse like those previous films. They also produced Downfall so I mean... it's not all schlock and schlock can be good.

The Director is Johannes Robert, whose directed films like the Strangers sequel, 47 Meters Down which is apparently a shark centric horror/thriller film, and The Other Side of the Door which is a paranormal horror film. All of these films were box office successes but... I haven't seen any of them despite my love of watching lowish budget horror movies regardless of quality as background noise.

Cast list is as follows:

Hannah John-Kamen – Jill Valentine
Kaya Scodelario – Claire Redfield
Neal McDonough – William Birkin
Donal Logue – Chief Brian Irons
Tom Hopper – Albert Wesker
Robbie Amell – Chris Redfield
Avan Jogia – Leon S. Kennedy
Lily Gao – Ada Wong
Nathan Dales – Brad Vickers
Chad Rook – Richard Aiken
Janet Porter – Annette Birkin
Holly de Barros – Sherry Birkin
Sammy Azero – Enrico Marini

Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons almost sounds too perfect to be true. Neal McDonough is a great actor. Kaya Scodelario was fine in the films I saw her in. I don't think I would've ever pegged her as a Claire Redfield type but who knows. And Hannah John-Kamen will truly bring out the strong Black Woman I've always seen Jill Valentine to be. But seriously, if I was to choose a Black woman to portray Jill Valentine, Hannah John-Kamen would be my first choice. Lyndsy Fonseca, Alexandria Daddario, Julia Voth, Levan Rambin, and Marie Avgeropoulos etc were probably busy or something. Also the dude they got to portray Chris Redfield... he definitely looks buff enough to punch some rocks.

From the cast list, it looks like it could be combining elements of the first two Resident Evil games which would make sense as those games take place in Raccoon City and involve Umbrella as the predominant villain and all of that is iconic to the franchise. Will it remain faithful to the video game series? If Ada Wong uses a door, I'm walking out.

Probably going to be woke given the casting of Jill Valentine, but that's just my feeling. Of course, nothing I'm seeing there makes me think this is going to be any better than the Paul W.S. Anderson films, and probably the most enjoyment I got out of any of them was the fan service of Milla Jovovich.

It's a general rule now, movie intended for English-speaking audiences must have at least one mayor role for minority actors and Asians don't count.

Paul W.S. Anderson's action filled semi-autobiographical saga of his wife Milla Jovovich and her adventures in the post-apocalypse like those previous films.
...I actually kind of liked Milla Jovovich's adventures in the post-apocalypse. It shed all that pretense of horror that, y'know, the Resident Evil games seem to have had (only ever seen bits and pieces) in exchange for gunplay and ridiculousness and...Milla Jovovich in skin-tight clothing with lots of straps and buckles for accessorizing.
I'll take cheese over scares! When there's scary things you can get scared! And by 'you' I mean 'I'. :p

Based on director, seems like they might be leaning more into the horror theme of things. Which might speak good things in terms to its accuracy to video game plotline or atmosphere. Though maybe the studio being the Monster Hunter one counteracts that a bit (pretty sure that diverged pretty far from the games, dunnow much about either).

...I suppose at least everyone can probably agree that it's a good thing Uwe Boll didn't get lined-up to direct? I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I hear Germany in connection to a video-game movie, there's always that lurking danger.

Welcome to Raccoon City is going to be the subtitle of the feature film still due to be released this fall. As in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Other details shared by Director Johannes Roberts are that the film will be inspired buy the work of John Carpenter (hopefully his earlier works), it will take place in 1998, and that while the Spencer Mansion will feature in the film, the focus will be on Raccoon City itself being infested with Zombies.

I'm actually okay with this blackwashing. We already had a Wesker who was pretty close to the originals mannerisms and appearance, at least as far as Resident Evil 5 is concerned and Lance Reddick is both a good actor and I feel has the appropriate attitude and stoicism for it all.

LOL you didn't read the article did you? Neither did Jeremy apparently.

PC Gamer said:
In the first timeline, 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. A manufactured, corporate town, forced on them right as adolescence is in full swing. But the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world.

Cut to the second timeline, well over a decade into the future: there are less than fifteen million people left on Earth. And more than six billion monsters — people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now thirty, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past—about her sister, her father and herself—continue to haunt her.

It's looking bahd Lance Reddick notwithstanding. 😂

Ah; so it's another one of those "in name only" sort of adaptations. You know, our culture has a long history of encouraging that sort of approach to adapting someone else's work to another medium; to the point where I've heard more than a few people argue it's a requirement for an adaptation to be considered worthwhile, as just trying to retell the same story is seen as lazy and uninspired. Personally, I think that attitude is indicative of a certain arrogance and selfishness that we've allowed the people who create our entertainment to believe is the natural order of things; as more often than not, it's encouraged them to not have any respect for anything other than themselves and their own work.

Yeah. I was initially wondering about why they were casting all of the young ladies... I mean certainly there are a lot of young ladies in the first Resident Evil games... there's Sherry Birkin, Rebecca Chambers... the uhhh errrr Mayor's Daughter.... and news to everyone... Albert Wesker has two teenage daughters as well! Plus there's the orphanage which featured more prominently in the remake.

I suppose Albert Wesker's backstory and character development has been pretty sparse as far as the video games are concerned. There was some sympathy to be generated with him in the first game, as his revelation as a double agent wasn't until later in the game and before then he was somewhat helpful. But giving him two teenaged daughters does seem out of left field. Maybe the idea was to flesh out the character more... play out those work vs. family and supervillainy vs. ohana themes we all love so much and in all honestly I'm fine with all of that.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuutt.... this movie is already covering two Resident Evil games... and in the opinions of many, probably the best two when it comes to survival horror from the series if not of the series in general. And you can still get that teenager POV from someone like Rebecca Chambers, or Mayor's daughter... or Sherry Birkin (though she's a little young for teenagery) and so on and so forth that above all else, the inclusion of Wesker's "daughters" just sounds like it'll muddle the whole thing up.

Maybe if it was divided into two movies it would actually be better. But that is the ultimate problem and just like with the recent Mortal Kombat remake, they're not trying to make a good and faithful adaption but launch a new franchise and hopeful cinematic universe. Gotta cram it all in there, make it young and appealing to as many people as possible, not just those interested in the RE franchise itself as if others somehow cannot be persuaded to watch this film without watering it down and muddling it up.

Hopefully I'm wrong. I'm sure there is a way to write it up and still make it a solid movie, if not as faithful an adaption a Resident Evil movie should be, but... the issue does seem in doubt.

It almost sounds like somebody had a post-Apocalypse movie idea, and then a higher-up told them to go find a popular franchise name to license to put on it.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. If a creator has to make compromises just to get their project produced, they'll make compromises.

The only person I've ever seen make movies like that which I've ever liked was Stanley Kubrick. Don't really have any directors like that anymore, though. I think what it really comes down to anymore is that they don't like the source material themselves, think their audience is too dumb to tell any different (which is really probably projection on their part), and let their ego make most of their decisions. And now there's the whole issue of politics on top of it. I'm sure the fact that this is based on a game helps make it that much easier for them to just not take it seriously, since probably all they know about it are the bad acting and memes that people make fun of ("You were almost a Jill sandwich"). One would think that Jill would be the kind of strong female character the "woke" crowd would go for (especially dressed in her tacticool outfit with body armor and a beret), but I guess not.

It's actually a more common practice than you'd think; I'm sure there are several "adaptations" you enjoyed that you never knew were supposed to be adaptations. Ever seen The Mask? Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory? The NeverEnding Story? All adaptations that are nothing like their source materials, and yet are considered classics in their own right. Heck; even the Blade Runner movie went off the rails compared to its source material, and it's thought to be one of the best scifi films ever made.

Blade Runner at least admitted that it was only loosely based on the source material.
That's because Ridley Scott respected the original author, and was confident enough in his own work to not feel the need to pass it off as the real deal. I think that's the main difference; confidence and respect. Modern filmmakers and such don't seem to have much of either anymore; they're just arrogant and selfish.

Hm, it sounds like they're trying to cram an awful lot into a single movie. Like, the first movie was a pretty long and involved movie, or at least a respectable length and complex movie, and it was like, 4 characters moving between like 3 rooms. I guess there were more characters technically, but like half the cast was killed off in the Red Queen laser room, before seeing one zombie.

Wait, is this a movie or a series? Or a movie and a series?

Just one movie.

But ya know, gotta cram as much as you can in so you can set up the cinematic universe to follow!
