Resident Evil MegaThread: 25 Years of 'Survival Horror'

So on January 21st, it's believed there'll be an announcement and even footage of the new Resident Evil: Village game that will serve as a sequel to the well received Resident Evil 7 game and a continuation of that series.

But also there is going to be a CGI animation based movie featuring Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as well as a live action television series also on Netflix. In addition Constantin Films is also planning on releasing a new live action film series for Resident Evil that they say are planning on being more faithful to the original video game lore and storylines from the first two games specifically.

And finally, there is also supposedly work on the remaking of Resident Evil 4 much like there has already been for the first three games in the series.

All of this occurring around the 25th Anniversary of the Franchise, just to make everyone feel old.

Resident Evil 2 was my first ever horror game as a kid and got me into survival horror in the first place, so I was more than a little thrilled when I saw it was getting remade. And the remake itself, while not completely free from flaws, blew me away. Between that and RE7, and despite the RE3 remake being a letdown by comparison (though I found it to still be enjoyable enough), I think the franchise has finally turned a corner and is set to rock the '20s - and not a moment too soon, considering it really looked like it was going to go the way of Silent Hill after the disappointing releases and half-baked attempts to follow Western trends on Capcom's part throughout the early-to-mid '10s.

So far, RE8 is looking pretty good. I hope Capcom has learned valuable lessons from the much more negative reception of RE3R compared to RE2R, but I'm actually not too concerned that they haven't - with RE7 they've already showed that they actually will listen to their fans' previous complaints about the series' direction from 4 onward, after all.

I've seen the trailer for the former series, and while it looks great, I can't say I have very high hopes for the plotting and characterization - that's always been a weakness of the RE CGI films, and it's only gotten more crippling with each entry. Then again, it does seem like Infinite Darkness will go in a less actiony direction compared to the ridiculous over-the-top spectacles of Damnation & especially Vendetta to match the more atmospheric and genuinely scary shift in Capcom's games, so maybe this will be another pleasant surprise after all. Color me cautiously optimistic.

Really not excited about the live-action series though, since the same company that made the movies in the first place is behind that.

Man, that takes me back. My first introduction to the franchise was RE4, a really good game. It was kind of a surprise to me that earlier games were a lot less actionized and more survival in a (japanese-styled) city gone mad. This said, RE4 hit that sweet spot for me that RE5 completely failed to hit. Among other things, the controls were odd, the inventory was horrible, and I didn't get any further than the part where Chris and Chick of the game fought zombie-biker the first time.

The title of the article is about a beautiful (not gross) bust of a lovely Licker but the article is chocked full of updates pertaining to the Resident Evil franchise.

First off, a semi wonky but still very cool animation of a Jill Valentine skin (for Zofia) that'll be an elite skin for Rainbow Six: Siege.

Capcom also confirmed the release of Resident Evil Re:Verse beta soon which is going to be some sort of squad sized multiplayer survival horror shooter.

*takes a breath*

Youtuber The Sphere Hunter did a forty minute long retrospective on the Resident Evil series for its 25th Anniversary.

I dig her content so I was grinning like a Licker watching the video. Also there's a great cosplay dump 10:55 in.

Capcom has apparently teamed up with Watch-maker MTM so that now you can get your own Umbrella themed watch for the franchises 25th Anniversary! Watches start at $567 but you can get a set for just over a thousand bucks. :p

Umbrella has by far the best overpriced Big Pharma merch.

A Voice Actor knowingly violated his NDA in a private conversation and leaked that the Resident Evil 4 remake is in fact under development from Capcom, as was long suspected.

No confirmation from Capcom yet.
Yeah, he's fired, and honestly, the shitbag has it coming.

Reveal Trailer for the Resident Evil 4 Remake Has Dropped. Looks like it's planned to be released in March of 2023. So still a while off.

Which is fine, because they need to take their time to make it goooooood.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has arrived and it's glorious apparently!

Just as much quality as the original... and even more horror elements!

Not quite as much silly moments though that were a hallmark of the original Re4.

I was in the column that thought RE4 didn't need a remake since it still held up well & Capcom has pretty much been treating it as their Skyrim, and I didn't have overly high hopes after being disappointed by RE3R's innumerable cuts to the original material, but I have been pleasantly surprised overall by how good RE4R's turned out to be. Just hoping that Capcom's next RE remake (presumably coming after RE9) will be for Code Veronica rather than RE5, I know the latter is still the best-selling Resident Evil game ever and like all companies Capcom likes having more $$$, but CV is probably the singular mainline RE that's aged the worst and is in the most need of an update. (Though I'd also like Dino Crisis to make a comeback first more than any new RE game at this point.)

One of the few flaws I did find with RE4R (aside from the loss of many of the OG wisecracks to the more serious tone, especially Salazar's) was Ada's voice acting, just solidified my support for the extension of the Redfield bloodline. When it turned out that critics have been flooding her social media I had a measure of sympathy at first - of course I believe that while criticizing the acting is fine and even necessary, harassing the actor isn't - but that's since been wiped away in a hurry as the actress, Lily Gao (who incidentally also portrayed a live-action Ada in her brief Welcome to Raccoon City appearance) has deleted her social media except for a post blaming white privilege. Lmao lady, it's not wypipo's fault that your acting is more wooden than a 2x4, and to be blunt I wish Capcom had just kept the RE2R actress. None of the other actors were as bad (I liked Krauser's new voice the least, but even he was more tolerable than the dead fish nu-Ada).
