Let's not forget about Japan being worried about nuclear attacks considering how World War II ended 😎
The B-29s which dropped the nukes were actually more expensive to design and build than the Manhattan Project.

"We need a very long-ranged aircraft the axis can't intercept which is capable of carrying and dropping a 10 ton bomb" was not an easy design requirement. The "can't intercept" part turned out to be "can't easily intercept" because the Japanese had aircraft which could and did intercept B-29 bombing raids.

The japanese were also on the end o their string and had barely enough of those aircraft to stop us.
The Germans had fucking Jet planes and it didn't help
The P-80 Shooting Star was almost ready for deployment at the end of WWII, outclassed the Me 262*, and obsolescent when Korea started.

* Seriously, a P-80 is 60mph-ish faster at any altitude and so easy to fly that the training version (the T-33) was used for roughly 50 years to teach people how to fly jets.
