Russia tries to invade the FO version of China instead of Ukraine, this time Russia doesn't have any interference from the International community but it turn don't get support from Iran and other such a allies providing them supplies and so it's strictly Russian assets.

No nukes for either side.

What happens?

China takes Russia seriously and over-mobilizes, which compounds the damage already done by CoVID to destroy their civilian economy. When the dust settles all the supply chains have routed around China and their demobilized subjects don't have enough jobs to return to. If we're really lucky they kill enough young people putting down protests to undo what demographic recovery they've managed since ending the One Child policy.

Russia loses even worse because they have to feed their logistics train through a straw, but they keep feeding mobniks to the furnace as quickly as they can until someone assassinates Putin or he dies of whatever he's dying of that has him pursuing a "legacy" at the cost ruining his nation.

Well we could swap out COVID with Fallouts New Plague. The latter is a fair bit more serious and lethal then COVID but still not a world ending threat. Just capable of a serious pandemic. :p

So a nation that couldn't take Kiev in a news cycle going up against a memetic Communism Stronk enemy with crazy sci fi technology on the wrong end of the Trans-Siberian Railway?

Now we sing the curbstomp song.

China might still collapse its economy, but Fallout China was able to invade Alaska. They're actually equipped to conquer Siberia. and if they have nuclear powered trucks like the Fallout Americans they can go through it and take Moscow. They can prop themselves up through demobilization with Russia's resources.

Look people, it's been known for ages how a USSR vs PRC war goes
One the first day the Soviets take 10,000 prisoners
On the second day they take 100,000 prisoners
On the third day they take 1,000,000 prisoners
On the fourth day the Soviets surrender, utterly unable to deal with the number of POW's,

Yeah... I'm sure it's kind of the difference between the Flu and Ebola I suppose. The latter is absolutely deadly and you'd think bleeding out of your orifices in such a horrific manner would really increase transmission, but it thankfully doesn't (compared to good ol fashioned and common respiratory diseases). Plus the drawbacks of distinctive symptoms, the perpetual high mortality rate and whatnot all also curb its spread. Still 200,000 dying from an internal hemorrhaging disease in a pandemic would be legitimately far more terrifying just on principle as well as scale.
