Again, I try to leave that sort of thing to God. It's just the fact that these people can't go a single topic without taking a jab at their political enemies that bothers me. I haven't exactly kept secret my views on Monarchies and Europe as a whole. I can still acknowledge how important these things are to the people that live there though. It's not like she was a genocidal ruler. Most of the population still loved and admired her. She was important to them.

I find myself cringing into high orbit over some of the things he comes out with, but monarchy is not a popularity contest. By blood right he is the legitimate King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and that's all anyone should really care about.

It wouldn't matter if I actively disliked him. Henceforth till the day the Crown passes to William, he is my King.

I am aware. But one can like the system and still dislike products of it.

I would want Croatia to declare Habsburgs as legitimate kings of Croatia (technically they still are: Croatian Parliament never actually dethroned them. Ustashi regime did, but well, that was not the Parliament). That does not mean I like every single Habsburg and everything they did.

Same here. I want United Kingdom to remain a monarchy, despite the fact that I have a rather difficult time finding a British monarch I actually like.

Agent23 has been threadbanned, please don't respond to him. If you don't have an opinion on this, that's fine, you're allowed to not care. Creating a several page argument about how much you don't care, on the other hand, is crossing the line into derailing and troll.

I am an American. What's more, I am a Texan American, so by birthright I am more or less American depending on who you ask; I don't know much about the British monarchy, but I do know it is rather important, and the Queen especially since I've never heard anything negative about her. So while I have no great stake in her death I will offer a prayer and condolences to those who mourn her passing. And that would be the end of it were it not for sanctimonious assholes informing me that her death should be celebrated, of all things, and daring to bang a patriotic drum they would otherwise scorn for being the tool of their "oppressors". Speaking ill of the dead is bad enough, particularly when they have done no great evil, but to dig up ghosts of American history for use as mouthpieces is beyond the pale; fuck the spineless bastards trying to wrangle Americans into hating the United Kingdom and it's traditions, a country that hasn't been an enemy since the inception of our own, and ironically became one of its greatest allies.

No, they’ve just been using the USA as proxies since the 1910’s. Still no reason to celebrate the Queen’s death.

There's people who've been born during her reign, and died at retirement age during her reign. 70 years as a reigning monarch is a big deal. Although in the West with our standards of living, 70 is kinda on the young end to die with average lifespans being about a decade longer.

The fierce American republican inside me screams out 'I don't need to care. Not my royalty. Royalty's a stupid concept anyways.'

The historian in me notes the lady was a ~70 year institution of Britain and the commonwealth through decolonization, the Cold War, and all the latest bullshittery of War on Terror to Wuflu, so her death is...symbolic on large scale and A Thing.

The decent human being and...common sense-haver...in me notes, in reaction to folks going turbohard in condemning her, that she was a ceremonial monarch, and beyond that any sins of her fathers don't/shouldn't pass onto her.

...And the cynic in me, with assistance from the American republican, is dismayed by how the next two weeks or so is undoubtedly going to chalk full of American media fawning over all the pomp and circumstance and 'majesty' and various whatabouttery of the funeral and coronation of Charles and all the other monarch-dead, long-live-the-new-monarch faff.

And a small traitorous part of me is still fascinated by all that same pompous faff of monarchy because...everybody is, in some way or another.

George of Hanover was basically the designated "tag, you're it" when England, Scotland, and Ireland needed a King 1714.

There's also John of Beaumont Sans Terre. The youngest son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. He's the off-screen bad guy in Robin Hood stories who had to come up with a literal king's ransom because he needed to post bail for his big brother King Richard the Lionheart.

Every US president except for Martin Van Buren is one of his direct descendants ... as are my wife and daughters. They just lost a very famous distant cousin.
