Putting this here and opening it up to anybody who might have any questions about the rules so far.

Several updates. I have generated the home clusters for all 5 people who have expressed interest. I have started the rather monumental task of generating the core cluster (100 systems to start with, if anybody else expresses interest will be making it even larger)

I have also started the monumental task of going through the entire tech tree in order to generate the in game research trees and the combat values.

I'm still working on the details.

But the rough outline is that each player should maintain their system list with details provided by myself as SM from the master list, keep track of their total income, MC reserves, number of shipyard slots per system, total number of Science Academies and R&D Centers and the status of the projects therein, and a set of Standard Operating Procedures for their fleets and systems.

They should also keep track of all of their ship designs, both the design data sheets themselves as well as number of ships of that design and whether or not it is obsolete, being upgraded, etc. Likewise they will need to keep track of their fleet formations, with said fleets locations, standing orders, and any mission orders that they are engaged in.

There will be a thread created for each player race in which their turns and the results thereof will be posted. Players are asked to not read threads for other races although I will admit that I have no way of enforcement beyond trusting in fair play and integrity.

Each turn the players will submit their actions for the turn, IE where they are moving their fleets, what systems they are attempting to survey, any construction activity, etc. This should include a running total of their MC reserves. Players can also submit to me espionage actions privately that will be budgeted under an 'other' category.

In return, each player will receive from myself each turn an Empire Activity Report, giving the results of any particular actions that complete that turn, any Non-Player Race activities that the player is aware of, and any random events that will take effect the next turn that the player needs to handle or be aware of. I will also privately inform the players of the results of any espionage actions that they took.

Diplomacy threads will be able to be opened by any player once two empires have met, player diplomacy is purely player driven with no rules or requirements for how you go about it.

If there is any combat in a round, the players involved will receive combat summary reports in their Empire threads detailing the results of the engagement and anything of particular note.

There will be a set of Empire Stories threads that the players can make story posts in that would be open to all and sundry and can be updated at any time and in any manner by the player in question.

And finally there will be the Galactic News Network thread, in which 'witty' robots that no player is able to locate somehow spread random factoids, rumors, and news about the state of affairs in the galaxy despite any attempts at silencing them.

Oh, let me not forget an OOC thread for players to shoot the breeze with each other. At some point I might open a Discord channel for the game as well if there is interest.

Do we get to write the appearances of our race, or is that made by you?

That's all up to you.

In addition, you get to completely decide your races culture, government, religion, economic system, etc. And the game rules always presume that whatever you decide is what works optimally for your species, so there are no modifiers whatsoever based on what you do in that regard. The only things that matter are the macro racial traits, and those are agnostic of anything else.

You can create if you want, but there are many other rules coming that might affect your decisions.

Right now I'm working on writing up the Planetside Installations rules, continuing to build the core systems list, rewrite and streamline the R&D rules, building the components lists, the research trees, and continuing to refine the combat system (adding a separate ground combat system for invasions, for example)

I have to admit that the calculations and abbreviations are giving me trouble. I understand most of it, but I have trouble decoding the following:

  • We will now write up the ship design as below.
    • [S1(AA)0][Q1][Y1][Q1][(KKKKKKK)1][Bsa1][(GGG)1][Mg][(II)1(II)1]
  • This ship will cost 326.1 MC to build
And I can't find what MS stands for from this section:

The Construction Pool Requirement is calculated as follows.
  • 1 Freighter per 100 PU
  • 1 Freighter per SY or SYM
  • 1 Freighter for every 5 MS

Most of the equipment codes will become clear once I post the tech trees and equipment tables.

MS is Machine Shop, it's something that you can use to produce small relatively cheap mobile construction facilities, while SYM are for if you want to build full up mobile shipyards.

EDIT

Same with the pricing and such, the various tables that I haven't yet posted contain all the relevant numbers. I'm hoping to have them posted Soon (tm).

Awesome. Might I suggest a thread with nothing but the abbreviations you use and their literal meainings? It'd be convenient to be able to use the find tool to quickly find the literal meaning of the abbreviation without shifting through words that happen to have the letters within them.

There will be a full glossary for the rules once they are complete, including an index etc

There's a reason I'm writing this all in word, it actually has automatic tools for this

Had company over last week and this week just started my last semester of classes for my degree. Right now I'm waiting on a bit of software that I commissioned to be finished (which has allowed me to increase the size of the playing field massively!) I've gotten started on the tech tree and am polishing up the combat rules at the moment.

If anybody is messing with the ship design rules already, I'd appreciate feedback on them.

A bit slow at the moment, lost some of my notes but will be posting an update by next week with the small craft rules. I anticipate being able to start play in a month or so.
