I've been to Russia a couple of years ago, spending a fortnight in Sankt Peterburg.
A clean, safe city (TBH I ranged around the broadly understood city centre), with excellent bi-lingual signs for tourists. Many more swarthy Moslems or Mongolia looking types than I remembered from 1995, in many menial jobs
I've been to Leningrad too - several time, in the 1980s and '90s.
In 2016 there was none of the fear I saw and felt in the '80s, and the city seems much better run than in the '90s.
Tyrrany? Bullshit.
Corruption? Croney capitalism? Probably yes - but to some degree that's everywhere. Russia struck me as a reasonably well run place with contented people.

The only thing I noticed being worse was the underground - during rush hour the trains used to run every 20-25 seconds, you saw the head of the next train rolling in just as the tail of the previous one was exiting the station. Now there was a minute!!!!!!11 between trains!

Frankly I'd not mind Putin and his gang ruling my country - they are just as corrupt as my local bunch of democratically elected crooks (to be replaced at the next election by another bunch of crooks from which - for all their rhetoric - in practice they are barely distinguishable), yet seem to be more efficient. And do not bend over to the shrill messed up LGTB/so-called "minorities" crowd demanding special treatment.

Yay! I'd hit the ground running! With much arm waving I can communicate verbally in Russian!
And I can read cyrillic better than most Russian 1st graders!

But its the same type of government. It's just that the pseudo-religious movement of intersectionality/progressivism/cultural marxism has converted a large part of West's career bureaucrats and corporate leaders (or at least made them pretend they did), while in Russia and Japan they have their own culture of career bureaucrats and corporate oligarchs, who in turn listen to their own academic and cultural leaders (in the West they are the priesthood and first converts of this ideology), who in turn aren't members of this pseudo-religion; and at least in case of Russia the former are using their power to discourage the latter from such conversions.

Fair enough, I suppose. It's just that as you say, the...intellectuals, which provide the soft power behind the bureaucracy and oligarchy just have a more rational background compared to the ones in the West at present.

If he's far right, how can he be getting protests from the far right, and over such things at that? No self respecting far right leader would be getting protests over... too much immigration from poor and culturally divergent countries to the south, and to add insult to injury, subsidizing them. And they aren't just making shit up.

Which means when they're talking about Russia they're not talking about it as it actually is but as the "Russian mirage" they've constructed for themselves in their heads. True.Russia could be secon China,but choosed to be second Venezuella - but,if they have the chance,they would still take over Poland and fill another mass-graves.Thanks God,they are to weak for that now.
