They say there was a gun on the floor and he had an empty holster on his hip. Yeah, I'm not sure I believe that.

After reading all the posts in the last few pages...

America is becoming more of a dystopian nightmare by the week.
This isn't America becoming worse. This is people realizing how bad American policing is, now that there is video. Police have always been unaccountable thugs. Now that they are somewhat more accountable (only in the PR department, but it's something at least), we suddenly see how bad their behavior is.

This is positive change. Now it needs to be followed up by scrapping qualified immunity, civil asset forfeiture (without a related conviction), busting police unions, etc. We've already mass adopted body cams, so that's a step in the right direction as well.

I personally think all public sector unions should be banned.

They were just a horrible idea because there is no real force to limit their power unlike the private sector that has the market to keep people in line.

Cops can always count on a happy ending for themselves also:

Honestly I think at this point the cops have been given way too much leeaway in their shitty conduct in the USA.

Even when most cops are good, the good cops will still in a lot of cases cover for the bad ones because of friendship, thin blue line, etc... The way to get the good cops motivated to break the thin blue line and start to turn on the bad ones is to no longer award damage compensations in civil and criminal suits from the state, but it should be taken from pension funds of the police themselves. When covering for bad cops due to bs thin blue line loyalty will lead to all cops facing prospects of their pensions getting plundered, things will change. And also qualified immunity needs to be thrown out as well to make individual officers much more likely to face civil charges for shitty conduct.

See, I have issue with most cops being good. I'd say most cops are rule followers. What percentage of cops would have forced a covid shutdown? What percentage of cops will investigate you to find 'illegal' guns? And I could go on. A good cop is one who doesn't enforce bad laws and also doesn't abuse their position.

But that's not special to cops, that's for all of humanity. Yeah, qualified immunity is they lynch pin of things that need to be fixed.

Fixed, definitely.

Done away with alltogether is a tougher one in my mind. Heavily restricted to obvious situations where it's very clear "this cop was acting in good faith but made an honest mistake" without letting the department they work for off the hook when it comes to paying for said mistake seems about right to me.

That's not what happens today.

More a case of "less flagrant" abuse and incompetence than outright brutalization of civvies, but still a Major League embarrassment that's been "Business as usual!" far longer than it should've been.
