The current Japanese defense industry is primarily geared towards supplying its own military with weapons made entirely in Japan, though there are some cases where the US has supplied Japan with certain military technologies that the latter may not be able to develop without any help, like the Aegis system. Unfortunately, Article 9 of its constitution has pretty much handicapped its ability to export weapons to other countries, and crucially, certain development of aircraft and other weapons are often done in collaboration with the United States.
Should Japan repeal Article 9 of its Constitution, would it have a positive effect on its defense industry? Neighboring South Korea is selling and exporting much of its weapons world wide, from the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle fighter planes in Philippine service, to the K-2 Black Panther tank that will enter Polish service in 2026. I would think that the repealing of Article 9 of the constitution might enable Japan to expand on its development of military equipment with the aid of other nations. Imagine a future Japanese tank that incorporates features from a French Leclerc tank, or a Japanese fighter plane that incorporates features from a Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
