Isn't the issue partly that they don't even know how to replicate some of the features like the economy anymore for some reason?

IIRC they just really don't like it for some reason, when they did Vic 2 one of the head honchos actually had a bet with the devs that the game wouldn't make a profit and that he'd shave his head if it did. Apparently he did indeed have to get a razor in the end.

I really want a new Victoria because Vic 2 was the last of the early stage Clausewitz engine games, IIRC. CK2 and onward has a certain polish and feel that's missing from EU3, EU:R, HOI3, and Vic2.

That said, simplifying the economic model might be worthwhile, if they're having trouble with it. That was always the hardest part of the game, since they tried to reflect realistic market dynamics, including limited supply influencing pricing and the big countries expanding spheres of influence and colonial holdings to guarantee both access to resources and markets for materials and goods produced by home industries. Past Vic 1 they even made it where the player faces the same limitations governments sometimes faced, like capitalists building what they (or rather the governing AI) thinks will make more money. The despair of seeing capitalists building Yet Another Liquor Distillery instead of the artillery factory one really craves to guarantee an independent source of artillery cannons is quite acute. :D

So an interesting development recently. There was going to be some sort of phone offshoot of Stellaris. My expectations weren't high, but they were running an alpha test in Canada, so I became curious to see how it played.

Of course, the developers of Stellaris: Galaxy Command was some Hong Kong based studio, likely to save money in development. Said studio decided to steal numerous art assets from other IPs, leading the game to be put under "Maintenance" until it's fixed, which might take quite a while. A bit of egg on their face over this.

That being said, the new DLC and species pack look like a lot of fun.

Been getting into CK2 and I have to say making a 100 Stat Man is the way to go if you are just starting out. It let's you do all the crazy stuff you ever wanted without much fear of dying. I'm leading the viking province of Jorvik currently, have like 40 kids across my various wives, concubines, and when I set it to seduction and sleep with every man on the courts wife and they high five me after because I'm just that damn charming. All but one guy, Ragnar, probably because he caught me so many times and every last child to his wife came from me which was like 6 of them and I acknowledged them all as my own. I've just founded my bloodline as head of the wolf warriors and have nearly conquered most of england having spent a couple decades ending dynasty after dynasty they have by sacrificing kids to Odin through constant wars and plotting and inducing rivalries. Got to say it's a pretty good way to play. I think I am going to induce insanity to get myself a horse to add to my council.

With Mercia I took special pleasure exacting revenge. Their king slept with my concubine, so I executed his after getting her as a prisoner on a raid, sacrificed his main son to Odin, captured the father in a rivalry war, had him in prison while I plotted the death of his kid. Only when he had lost everything did he have my permission to die.

Ahh, Victoria 2 was pretty good, though playing as anything but a developed country make me want to cry....why can’t I make money?!?
Stellaris is pretty good, I like making my own « federation » by forcibly vassalizing my neighbors so that I can rival the actual federation in the end game :p
Imperial sprawl was a pretty painful addition, not gonna lie, but without it we could basically blob ad infinitum, unlike the first version of the game.
My favorite is still HOI4, even though my preferred mods are still broken from the last update.
