*Thursday, December 29, 1983: Fresh off of a hard-fought reelection campaign, Mississippi Governor William F. Winter (D) confirmed reports he will indeed be seeking reelection to a historic third term as Governor in 1987, which if completed by January 14, 1992, will make him the longest-serving Mississippi Governor with 12 years of service. United States Senator Ray Mabus (D-MS) had been mentioned as a possible contender for the Governorship if Winter chose to retire, but has decided to remain in the United States Senate.
