Chapter 4: George
3:29 PM CST, Sunday, January 1, 1984

President George HW Bush being interviewed at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas (December 1983).

"......We are currently in the half-point phase on reshaping the culture and fabric of this great Republic for the betterment of future generations. Other seem to say with caution: "What other potential challenges your administration will be facing?" I confidently say in response: "The American people want us to continuing staying the course."
------President George HW Bush special exclusive interview (Spring 1984).

The country was slowly moving on and focusing on other things, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas during the latter part of Fall 1983. Americans voiced strong approval of President Bush's job performance with approval ratings of 61%, the sixth-highest of any President. Although the record-highest was that of the late Nelson Rockefeller , who had 83% approval rating days before his sudden death of a heart attack on January 26, 1979. Americans voiced approval of the direction of the country with 99% due to stability in leadership during difficult circumstances including the improving economy and unemployment was declining. Divided government in both houses of Congress: Democrats controlling the US House of Representatives and Republicans controlling the United States Senate, Bush took the opportunity to working with O'Neill and Baker on mutual bipartisan priorities. There was lots of legislative productivity: Foreign Policy and International Affairs were going to become the main top priorities of the Bush administration; President Bush also continued the formation of two special task forces: Deregulation and International Drug Smuggling, both of which began under the Reagan administration (these two task forces chaired by Bush when he was Vice President); Deregulation and International Drug Smuggling Task Forces were both popular by Conservatives.

With a likely reelection campaign for his first full four-year term in 1984 coming up, Bush began courting the conservatives through his work and hardworking efforts. The deregulation push by the Bush administration had a resounding impact on the following: Finance, Resource Extraction, Broadcasting. The Bush administration also aggressively cut the massive red-tape by eliminating thousands of massive government positions.

Like Reagan, Bush staunchly supported anti-communist regimes of Guatemala and El Salvador including the Contra Rebels in Nicaragua. Bush also enthusiastically supported the peaceful democratic transition in the Argentine Republic with the inauguration of Raul Alfonsin as the South American country's 43rd President on December 10, 1983. The Bush administration also supported the anti-communist regime of flamboyant and controversial Mexican President General Oscar Robles, whose campaign for a fourth term in a fourth indirect presidential election Electoral College system set for 1984 for the new twelve-year term and simply tolerated the Robles government despite international controversy. The Bush Doctrine (more on this later in the timeline) began to slowly take shape as more of the Bush disciples began to make major roles on domestic policy, economic policy and foreign policy.

It was a packed ceremony indoors because of the thunderstorms outside.

FULL DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN UNITED STATES AND HOLY SEE ESTABLISHED

Basilica_Sancti_Petri_blue_hourl_-_Retouch.jpg
*US President George HW Bush announced the establishment of full diplomatic relations and he appointed William A. Wilson, who had served as the Special Envoy to the Holy See under then-President Ronald Reagan, as the first United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenioptentiary to the Holy See. Bush overcame strong opposition from the US State Department to establishing full diplomatic relations between the United States and the Holy See; Wilson would be easily confirmed by the full United States Senate in a vote of 83-19. Previous Presidents had difficulties in establishing full diplomatic relations because of the controversial 1868 law, which had prohibited expenditure of funds for the US Embassy to the Vatican being established, completing a major foreign policy initiative that had begun under the late President Reagan in 1981.

Upon Senate confirmation, Ambassador Wilson flew to Vatican City and presented his credentials to Pope Carlos I at the Vatican.

The Democrats
11:00 AM CST, Monday, January 2, 1984
Somewhere in Iowa

While the Republicans were overwhelmingly and solidly united behind President Bush's reelection campaign, the Democrats, on the other hand, were in complete and total disarray as they sought a candidate who might win the White House in the upcoming 1984 presidential election.

Among the contenders running for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 1984: United States Senators John Glenn (D-OH), Fritz Hollings (D-SC), and Gary Hart (D-CO); Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson (D-IL), who was the first African American to campaign for a major party presidential nomination.

The early front-runner for the Democratic Party presidential nomination: former US Ambassador to Canada Walter "Fritz" Mondale, who previously served 12 years in the United States Senate representing Minnesota and served four years as Minnesota State Attorney General. Mondale had the backing of labor unions and by most Democratic officeholders. While Senator Hart was supported by younger members of the Democratic Party and advocates of a "nuclear freeze" in armaments. Political observers strongly and accurately predicted whoever won the Democratic Party presidential nomination was doomed to lose big in the upcoming November general election.

President George HW Bush delivering his first State of the Union Address before Joint Session of Congress.

It had been two months since the Carnage in Seoul on 13 November 1983 resulted in his ascension as the 42nd President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush had been busy working following the emotional State Funeral festivities of the late President Ronald Reagan on 21 November 1983. But Reagan's shocking and violent assassination, however brought new challenges for the Bush administration both domestically and on the international front with potential foreign policy hotspots itching to explode (more on those hot-spots later in the timeline).

Of course, the political chatter among political campaign experts and pundits began to ask whether President Bush would announce a nominee for the vacant Vice Presidency. Bush chose to follow the model of the 36th President and fellow Texan
Lyndon Baines Johnson in running the country without a Vice President in the current term: Johnson ran the country for an entire year before choosing then-United States Senator Hubert Horatio Humphrey (D-MN) as his Vice President in the 1964 presidential election (which LBJ won in a massive landslide that year). Many questioned what was taking Bush so long to name a Vice President and with the mood of the nation SLOWLY moving on following Reagan's assassination, there was no need to rush. And why wouldn't he? Because he didn't have any names of potential nominees for the second highest elected office, with the 1984 elections around the corner, Bush knew he had to name a Vice President at some point, preferably before the beginning of Summer 1984.

Previous Presidents had no problems running the country without their second-in-command such as then-President
Harry S. Truman, who served a full four-year term without one from 1945 to 1949, ultimately naming then-United States Senator Allen Barkley (D-KY) for the 1948 Presidential election.

January 25th was the day, many would call it as "The Day Bush Became His Own Man". President Bush entered the US House of Representatives chambers as the 42nd President of the United States, to deliver his first State of the Union Address before a Joint Session of Congress. He delivered the speech in an excited, fiery and fierce but jubilant tone and spoke about every specific topic which mattered a lot to him: National Defense, building up the US Armed Forces, deregulation in boosting the American economy, cutting government spending, foreign policy and basically everything that millions of Americans wanted addressed.

The speech 43 minutes and 16 seconds and contained 4,937 words. President Bush's speech was broadcast on both radio and television. The Democratic Party Response was delivered by the following:
*United States Senators (and future 48th President)
Joe Biden (D-DE); David Boren (D-OK); Max Baucus (D-MT); Carl Levin (D-MI); Claiborne Pell (D-RI); Walter Huddleston (D-KY); Robert Byrd (D-WV).
*US Reps. Dante B. Fascell (D-FL); Tom Harkin (D-IA); William Gray (D-PA); Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and US House Speaker Tip O'Neill (D-MA).
Harkin and Boxer would both go onto winning elections to the United States Senate in 1984 and 1992 respectively.

*Sunday, January 29, 1984: The controversial tabloid publishing company, The Informer exposed a controversial expose on United States Senator Gary Hart (D-CO) with incriminating evidence including documentation as well as pictures of the two-term Democratic United States Senator from Colorado and a female staff member from his Senate office during a fishing trip.

The female staffer in question, known as Donna Rice held a press conference in Springfield, Illinois, where she detailed how long the extramarital affair had been going on as well as reading love letters.
When asked about the allegations, Senator Hart released a statement strongly denying the allegations against him and vowed to continuing his presidential campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. "These allegations are absolutely and categorically false!"

The Informer is infamously known for exposing the secret lifestyle of then-United States Senator William Allain (D-MS) ,who resigned in disgrace in Spring 1981 after his controversial arrest in a prostitution sting by FBI agents exploded the American political scene. Allain, however, went on to win statewide office as Mississippi State Attorney General in 1983, but political observers strongly consider Allain's political career damaged goods politically because of the explosive bombshell allegations against him.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN PYONGYANG FIREBOMBED BY THREE CRUISE MISSILES

*Friday, February 3, 1984: "This is Ted Koppel of ABC News and we are interrupting your regularly scheduled programming because we're getting more news developments coming out of Pyongyang, North Korea as what you are seeing is the Presidential Palace, which has been firebombed by three cruise missiles and possibly more as several other government buildings have been struck by additional airstrikes. I believe, I believe that is an extra-large fire, huge balls of fire with smoke covering the air over there. As many of those watching already know since late last night, we have been reporting following President Bush's Address to the Nation on Operation Payback and according to the Associated Press and other foreign news media outlets, there has been rumblings of a potential forced regime change over inside the isolated communist country for awhile, but we cannot know for sure what's going to be the endgame of this just yet.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: MOSCOW AND BEIJING BLAST OPERATION PAYBACK AS MEDDLING IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, VOW RETALIATION
*Official statements from the Foreign Affairs Ministries of the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union both attacked the controversial Operation Payback military operation as meddling in the political and international affairs of another country. The Kremlin also issued a statement accusing an unknown Jihad group of being involved in the attack of North Korea, saying "The responsible party is that of a Jihad Group and we are strongly condemning this illegal military operation."

US INFLICTING HEAVY DAMAGE IN OVERNIGHT BOMBING RAIDS
ABC News reported that the F-18 Hornet aircraft, which was deployed from the aircraft carriers of the USS Gerald Ford and Nimitz and inflicted severe damage by destroying all of North Korea's air defense facilities. Now we're getting reports that Republic of Korea and Japanese Naval warship aircraft carriers were deploying F-16 aircraft, which inflicted damage on several of the North Korean military operation bases, etc.,

......"The bombings had been wiping out nearly all of the infrastructure, roads, water supply, apartments, etc., since Operation Payback got started. We originally planned some airstrikes hitting main key areas, but some in the meeting wanted harsher aggressive measures: that meant the complete eradication of the regime in North Korea even if it meant alienating both China and the Soviet Union, both of whom were staunch allies of the isolated communist country over there.

Once official confirmation that North Korean dictator Kim II Sung was dead, we wondered who would take his place considering nearly half of the North Korean military bases, defenses, etc had been wiped out due to vicious airstrikes, drone attacks, barrel-bombings which continues to ratcheting up non-stop.

Good thing is that the Psycho Nutjob was no longer a problem and half of that dictator's family members got killed in the attack when the Presidential Palace got bombed by cruise missiles. However, the big unknown is whether someone would take over and become more crazier....."
