During Obama administration Al-Qaeda in Syria was considered an American ally, that's why Iraqi branch that then went rogue and rebranded itself as ISIL was able to reorganize and gather strength there, before launching highly successful war of conquest. New administration is going back to friendly relations with Syrian branch, after four years of hostility under Trump.

Assad may not be good but the alternatives are worse. There is no one else who could take over other than various stripes of Jihadists. Nation building has failed for decades and I see no reason why it should succeed now.
So the Syrian Civil War started roughly ten years ago. In spite of such an impediment, Assad is still set to win an election a decade after the war.

There is no way would I trust that she abandoned her medieval Islamist traditions and adopted hedonistic Western values without her enduring a multitude of deeply invasive and thorough debriefings, obviously recorded, that can show the true depths of her acceptance of the West.
