Venezuelan Navy 0, Cruise Ship 1

Behold the competence and skill of the Venezuelan Navy! A fully armed warship was overpowered and defeated by a perfidious trap sprung by a cruise ship which cunningly tricked the warship into first firing upon and then ramming the civilian craft.

Minor detail, the cruise ship is an arctic cruise ship... with massively reinforced hull for ice operation.

Venezuelan patrol ship has since sunk, and according to Maduro, this was an ACT OF PIRACY by the cruise ship... in international waters...

I should have expected that really

Sound the alarms and learn the lyrics to 'Over There' again, my American comrades! Germany has simultaneously instituted unrestricted subsupermarine warfare and violated the Monroe Doctrine. No doubt these perfidious lies of 'reinforced hull for arctic operations' are just the tip of the iceberg! We cannot allow the Krauts to continue cruising to victories like this!
:p

The ship being bound for Tortuga and ensuing charges of piracy, alongside with the cruise ship being the 'Resolute' undoubtedly makes this 100% more amusing than it otherwise would be--and it's pretty amusing by itself.
Venezuela/Maduro's government faces a fun choice of being either so malicious as to allow a commander to try for piracy, or so incompetent/incapable that it's military is resorting to piracy.

I believe I've found video of the cruise ship's crew in the immediate aftermath of the incident:

Now, now....maybe the Venezuelans were just trying to recreate a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean, where Captain Jack Sparrow arrives in Port Royal....

Avast, me hearties! Oh, wait...

Should watch Pirates of the Caribbean again, forgot this scene

Or never saw it as that maybe Director’s Cut

"It also said it "did not rule out" that the cruise ship "was transporting mercenaries to attack military bases in Venezuela"."

Seems like a valid theory to me. Just like. World in Conflict. :p

Any excuse is better than no excuse. Even if it's totally unbelivable.
That's not true, some excuses really are worse then having no excuse because they're both unbelievable and make you look like a moron for making them because it means you're stupid enough to think people will believe you. It's like saying you missed a meeting because you were kidnapped by aliens from outer space, completely unbelievable and it makes you look dumb in the process. The mercenary excuse falls under the same principles.

What's next?

"Venezuela fighter-jet downed by parrot as pilot hunted for dinner: parrot unharmed".

🤔

Well for a direct metaphor the Venezuelans could try and pull a Hainan Island incident... only instead of intercepting an American spy plane, they'll try and intercept a jumbo jet airliner and end up clipping the wing, getting sucked into the turbine and the jet fighter will be cleaved in two with the ejection seat smashing into the crushed canopy of the fighter itself, killing the pilot.

The jumbo jet may or may not suffer serious enough damage to pursue a forced landing.
