Right on, gatekeeping is never okay!

Im going to go against that.

In many cases gate keeping is nessary because some places are purposefully built for communities of various types.
I am after all not against the left having safe spaces only their blantant assholish demand that only they have safe spaces and every one else should get fucked.

That said banks and fincial insitutions should be apolitical and things like kayne west should never happened, and Paypal really should have been hit with extortion charges for their latest stunt.

This I fully agree with. PayPal have acted scummy in the past on certain things, especially with just randomly locking people's accounts and their money, but this was almost (or, IIRC, actually) criminal what they did.

I use PayPal because I have to. But fuck them.

I disagree, gatekeeping is necessary. It's cancel culture that is never okay.

That's the position I take as well.

Quality control and exclusionism is a basic instinct. however, this shit is some sort of social neurosis that needs to never be forgotten or forgiven.

Also the first proper right wing president of the US should treat a Blackrock as if it were the Cali Cartel. There really isn't that much difference between Fink and the Orejuela brothers when you brass tax it.

The intention is preserve the purity of the in-group against a vague definition of bad people.
The enforcement is done by harassment of the percieved interloper and unnecessary denial of service.
The proverb is that only one deserving this treatment would take issue with it.
The effect is that an invisible set of rules is taking priority over the real, established set.
They are synonymous practices.

Otherwise known as the basis for group survival.

Yes, I'd call that a good thing.

Tribal state of mind. But said state of mind makes people - groups of people - absurdly easy to control and manipulate.

Can't say it's such a good think for America these days

Yeah, yeah, your point being? A fortress with open gates is useless against invaders.

Well, if everyone else is using that state of mind, why should we be the only ones not adopting it? Why should we allow the other to invade, consume, and replace what belongs to us? It's not like the outsider would hesistate doing so.

"Tribe" is just another term for "group". Here's the simple fact: if your rivals prioritise their group's survival, and you don't prioritise your group's survival... then they survive, and you don't.

This was about gate-keeping. Well, gate-keeping is unquestionably a good thing. Walls and gates afford security, so that within their protective circle, freedom and a normal degree of relaxation and enjoyment may exist. The known alternatives are extinction, or insane, psychopathic militarism. Remember: Sparta had no walls. Because it had indoctrinated its populace into being a living wall.

How's that for "tribal" and "easy to control and manipulate"?

Gatekeeping helps to avoid the extreme conditions under which unhealthy group-think sets in. Within the safety of gated walls, reasoned debate can be held without a sword to your throat. And gates can be opened. They're not always closed. They aren't universally exclusive. They're selective. And that's good.

Gate-keeping is the basis of civilisation and stable society.

What's truly dangerous is this whole "cancel culture", which isn't defensive but offensive. Gate-keeping is saying "we have a place that is our own and we decide who's welcome here". Cancel culture/deplatforming is saying "people we dislike don't deserve a place at all".

One is a creed of self-determination and survival. The other is a creed of (figurative or, if given the chance, literal) genocide. The difference should be obvious to all sane persons.

Ah yes, this comic.

Fits, if you're in Europe after it was Christianized, excepting the parts the Muslims had invaded.

Or if you're in the Indian subcontinent, before the Muslims invaded.

Or if you're in SE Asia, before the Muslims invaded.

Or in pre-20th century China.

Or Japan.

However, if you cross between any of those areas?

Hoooo boy, in one area, raping a woman is considered barbaric. In another, if she goes to the police she'll be arrested for committing adultery.

In one area, insulting one's ancestors may be grounds for a duel to the death. In the other, it'd just get odd looks.

In one, blasphemy would (at the most) get you a slap, more likely nobody would even blink. In the other, it can get you beheaded.

Need I go on?

You can give people mental whiplash if they present this comic, by asking if they also apply that to their and their rival's political parties. The distilled essence of cognitive dissonance is hilarious when they try to justify how the Republicans* are pure cosmic evil but in disputes between nations the comic is valid.

*This comic's most always presented by liberals so ask them if purple's the democrats and orange is the republicans.

From telegram:

I am doing two things right now:

1. I am looking at strengthening our network for the return to clearnet.
2. I am going to replicate the backend so that we can never be knocked off Tor again. This is something I can do on my own. I should have done it sooner but I thought I had more time.

The reality of a Tier 1 provider like Zayo censoring the Internet is very dire and I hope you will pay attention.

In the world of ISPs, there are very few real players. There are 15 tier 1 networks in existence. There are many more ISPs, but they generally all connect to a Tier 1 network.

Additionally, there are even fewer ISPs which provide DDoS protection. These companies (Path, Telia, Voxility, Zayo) are more politically charged than a normal ISP. Without them, should you manage to peer, you are not on the Internet if you cannot handle DDoS attacks yourself. DDoS mitigation has never been made a core part of the Internet, and I believe that weakness is deliberately encouraged by governments, as the US government routinely utilizes DDoS attacks to censor networks like Tor.

A DDoS attack can be between 1Gbps and 100Gbps or higher. A 10Gbps line is about $700/mo. This scales pretty linearly, with some bulk discounts. Not all routers can handle 10Gbps, and few routers can handle 100Gbps. Those are also thousands of dollars each. Then you actually have to find a way to scrub the attack bandwidth.

Meanwhile, we are not allowed to conduct ordinary business. Without reason and without appeal, I cannot process credit cards. We would easily make five times what do now if I could simply charge people for services like any other website. That is not possible because of the financial censorship, and as a result I am very limited in what I can realistically afford to do.

So, ultimately, we are reliant on a few companies to continue tolerating us and one of the best ways to be tolerated is to have an established business relationship. If you've been at one datacenter talking to the same people for 20 years, as is often the case in the industry, they are likely to handle things diplomatically. If you are dropped in their lap last weekend like a pot of boiling water, they are unlikely to.

Even the companies that do want to help are often underneath companies that do not want to help. The datacenter Worldstream in the Netherlands has blocked us, and thus any company that operates out of Worldstream cannot support us.

I do like my website, and after spending time on other communities I know that nothing will ever replace it if the circus of sex pests and psychologically disturbed slacktivists have their way.

I also am very sad to see these state of affairs. Without breaking the law, without piracy, and without incident (like Tarrant and Jan 6 with 8chan), we have been censored at some of the highest reaches of the Internet. A handful of very mentally ill people people sending nasty emails, threatening the families of datacenter employees, and calling in favors with friends in high places have very effectively snapped the neck of the interconnected world.

Every year the diversity of websites online shrinks, and the centralization of services grow. Those who should want to fight a tech oligarchy instead cheer it on and help consolidate its power. I am helplessly watching the Internet, and the freedom it has brought our entire species, die a slow death. It hurts. The Internet is being murdered by shortsighted parasites, and they will never realize how big a mistake it is until there's no going back.

A few decades from now, we're going to look back at all this and go " 'it's a private company, they make thier own rules'....ugh, how could we have been that stupid?"

The only question is if the tone of that response, it's either going to be the same tone as "ugh, why did I think bell bottoms were cool" or "ugh, why did we think he'd stop with czechoslokovia?"

Small update: I've gotten access to the devices after losing Internet via Zayo. I'm getting copies of everything now. Tomorrow I'll begin my work rebuilding the site from scratch again.

There's a battleplan ready to go. The site will no longer be centralized on a single server. I intended to do that a while ago but I've never had an opportunity, so I'm doing it now. This means that even if one host physically unplugs all our shit we will still have others. I intend to get Tor working first, and its availability will be higher with our new setup, but the clearnet will come up soon too.

As for the Clearnet, a bunch of people have decided to help out and I have a strategy for keeping it up. It will take a lot for it to go down again completely.

In 2021, I wrote an article called "Where the Sidewalk Ends" explaining what problems I expected in the future. It's funny to read in retrospect.
<Where the Sidewalk Ends: The Death of the Internet>

As far as I'm concerned, this is it. The question of "can a bunch of trannies and journos cry their way into completely censoring something from the Internet" will be answered by the end of the year."
