Is China really a threat to the United States Hegemony?

Another day another espionage case.
At this rate, the FBI is going to go back to the 'good ol' days' (or, if you're a politician on either side of the spectrum, the 'bad ol' days', remember before the current arrangements the FBI was responsible for kneecapping the KKK and similar groups before hitting the mob) where it was damn impressive for something with only decades to its name.

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.

Taking care of the mob is actually quite impressive. If they reigned supreme the US could shift into those countries ruled by cartels.

You've got to remember that Edgar J. Hoover didn't consider the Mob to be an actual threat to the US. Cause headaches? Yeah. An actual threat? No. What Edgar J. Hoover considered threats to the US is the likes of the KKK and their allies (basically white supremacists and Nazis of every shape and size) being priority #1, Radical African American groups (i.e. the Black Panthers and friends) as #2, USSR aligned leftists as #3... with the Mob all the way as a distant fourth... at least from my readings of the man.

What was far more impressive was how thoroughly the FBI kneecapped the KKK and friends so hard that they never really got as powerful as they had at their peak. The current KKK and friends are mere shadows of what they once were.

True in a sense. The mob was just a criminal gang that never did reach to the level of the cartels while those the FBI pursued had political aspirations for the country and so they're worth targeting to put a stop to that.

... and it also helped that the mafia didn't want to replace the government either. If any of them had the same political desires as the cartels of this day and age back then? Well, they've just gotten themselves to priority #2 if I read Edgar right.

He had always considered the KKK and their allies (i.e. the reactionary right) as enemy #1 if I read Edgar right.

He should be. They're the legacy of a civil war that hasn't concluded when a certain policeman let Lincoln die.

That, and if the rumors are to be believed, Edgar was gay. So if they got into power, he'll be up on the wall. Yeah, there are some theories on why he was so thorough and paranoid.

They started badmouthing and character assassinating Hoover ten years after he died when the last of his contemporaries had left the Bureau. I wouldn't place any sort of credence on those rumors, as the promulgators are known liars with political motives. There were also rumors of him partying with various political machine leaders, drinking at speaks and employing darker complexioned hookers. Hoover was not the first FBI director and he would not have lasted through his early career in the Library of Congress if he was in any way impeachable. If you look closely at a picture of Hoover, a very rare color picture, his beef with the KKK become obvious. As for his harassment of political dissenters, Robert Mueller, the second longest sitting FBI director, did much worse to innocent people and is following in the footsteps of Vincent 'The Chin' Gigante and playing at being senile to try and get out of it if Trump wins and gets real control of the executive branch.

FYI, Edgar was his middle name; his full name was John Edgar Hoover. And actually, he was on good terms with both LBJ & Nixon (the former was actually his next-door neighbor prior to becoming VP). From what I recall, it wasn’t that he was gay, but rather he was asexual and ridiculously OCD about (and good at) his job.

Anyway, the NYT had an article on an NYPD cop being arrested for espionage

So, yes, they inflict COVID on the world, then continue being shit lords extraordinare...

Spies abound in this society. All they do is bring someone in, set them up in business, get them citizenship and they can hire anyone they like.

Hoover shafted this man because he got better press than him. Melvin Purvis - Wikipedia

From what I understand, he wasn't... especially with Nixon. Just after one meeting with Nixon and Nixon came out shaking like a leaf and thinking his position is untenable, which lead to what happened in Watergate. Hoover wasn't any politician's friend, even back then. Remember, it was politicians that kept screwing with the early FBI in the first place and he ensured that no one would after he became director.

Purvis was an attack dog that outlived his usefulness. Hoover was moving into the thirties and confronting Comintern, Nazis the British and the run up to WW2. I don't blame him for distancing himself and his agency from someone that used torture. It wasn't like the old days before radio and film where facts could be disputed and criticism easily be dodged. He didn't want some gangster filmed getting castrated on a cinderblock by an FBI boot-heel and having to take the fall. As for all this gay stuff, Hoover was born in 1895. He was five years older than the century. So they talk about him being gay due to having an attendant during the early 70's when he was 75 years old, long after most of his contemporaries had died of old age.

When he was hard on crime, being a good person is not the firs6t thing someone may be

Sorry. When did Hoover become someone worthy of praise, outside of the kind od grudging respect you give a Stalin for their shear ruthless power hunger?

As someone who works in the IC and one day, should I not stay in the Army, join the FBI, he is someone to look up to who is hard on crime
