Interesting Stories From The Internet

Not an interesting story, but...
Shots fired!
Yeah, America's educational reputation is pretty low, heh.

America's educational system is better than Russia's.

Really, north/northeastern European countries, along with east Asia, tend to dominate the rankings, though there are so many caveats to the rankings that I don't think they are as meaningful as people pretend they are.

And yet we have Americans on the street who can't even do basic math problems, know basic geography, or basic history.

And, no, this guy didn't trawl around for hours looking for the dumbest of the dumb -- he literally ran into them all in minutes of starting.

I'm sorry, but there's a reason why Americans have become the butt of jokes when it comes to their education, and the above are perfect examples.

The trouble is that he found all these dumb people very quickly, one after the other. It's a sample size, yeah, but it's pretty telling at how badly American education has declined.

"What is 15% of 100?"

"Uhh... 75?"

"...Yes." 🤸‍♀️
Fuck percents.
I mean, we dint have to be smart in numbers to be smart in making things

...I gotta be honest, that genuinely shocks me -- and this is coming from a guy who completely failed his GCSE maths (I got a U, which is "ungradable", so, yeah).
What it is is under pressure I would freak out and over think.
I would have probably said 85

Maybe it's just my experience talking, but I find it odd how I knew how to do percentages, fractions, decimals, and other "intermediate" calculations in grade school, while Gen Z'ers old enough to be in high school or college by now don't.

That being said, I don't suppose they asked older adults, as well? This doesn't focus on age, exactly, but I distinctly recall something about A&W pulling their 1/3-pound burger because people thought it was less than 1/5 pound back in the Eighties, long before the kids in those videos were born. As such, while the stupidity here isn't exactly "age-specific", it's certainly cross-generational, so I wouldn't be too hard on these Gen Z'ers when their elders have failed at simple math and common knowledge just as badly. Lots of ignorance to go around, unfortunately. (n)

I will note I was considered a touch below average in HS at Math, pulling in lower grades than my other subjects. Today people younger than me think I'm some kind of math wizard for being able to do fractions and percentages in my head.

I imagine it's what somebody might feel like if they got a modern education and then in thirty years all the kids are amazed they can read without moving their lips.

There has been a concerted effort to dumb down Americans since at least the 1960s.

Our educational system has sucked for a very long time.

I think we honestly think we should just privatize the whole thing have each kid with vocurs and let the parents pick the school.

I might have said -85 because I misheard it as "What's 15 minus 100?" by someone who asked the question out of the blue while I was thinking about something other than answering a random math question.

I'm actually good at math and figured out that for any prime number a, (((a^2)-1)/2)=b and (((a^2)+1)/2)=c gives you a^2 + b^2 = c^2 and a right triangle when I was 14ish entirely on my own.

So we already know that Finland never existed and it's entirely a hoax to fool Russians into invading frozen bits of ocean, whereupon they fall through the ice and drown. However, TikTok has uncovered an even greater hoax: Ancient Rome never existed. Turns out, all those buildings, artifacts, and the entire Latin language were invented by White People to justify their imperialism and take credit for the actions of Africans and Arabs. Ancient documents that might appear to be Latin are actual Phoenecian documents, which look like Latin if you hold them upside down and read backwards.
