Three reasons I can think of.
1) House seats are based off of the census, which the Dems fought tooth and nail over it not being allowed to ask immigration status. Without illegals inflating the census in blue states, red states would get more House seats, and thus depower the Dems in a significant way. This is something that the Dems are seriously afraid of, with regards to Trump's deportations; they don't allow the Dems to use lack of immigration status in the census to inflate their House seat count.
2) Dem NGO's are often getting caught entangled with the illegal immigration schemes, and this ends up putting Dem politico's in hot water when their connections to the NGO's are found by groups like DOGE, so the Dems have another reason to protect illegal immigration schemes, simply to cover their own ass's from being jailed for using US taxpayer funds for illegal activities.
3) They are in bed with the cartels as well, who help bring over the illegals the Dems use to pad census numbers, and the cartels have blackmail material on Dem politico's to keep them cooperative.
I agree with @Bacle on why the top people are pushing it. the street level people are a mix of overly emotional Karens, Socialist Activists trying to destabilize the system they live in for the revolution, and Illegals trying for a hail mary. this is a crash out for them not something they are doing as a calculated thing. this is desperation and them throwing everything they can at it.

Honestly if were going to have a civil war this the perfect time to have it.
The left wont have legitimacy, they wont have the military, the right was able to purge quite a bit from their pateron networks. If the left starts a revolution this is the chance to clean house. Yeah it will suck but things will actually be able to function in the aftermath.
