Owen Benjamin was dropped by patreon. Owen Benjamin and over 100 fans sued Patreon, arguing that Patreon's cancellation of the Owen's patreon account amounted to tortious interference. Legal hijinks and slimy tricks by Patreon follow. Then a judge rules that everyone in the lawsuit is now permitted to go to arbitration. Since the suit was filed in California, this means that the patreon is on the hook for the various fees involved..totaling over 10,000 for each person.

This means Patreon is on the hook for many millions of dollars to pay for the arbitration.

This also opens the door for many others, including people like Sargon who had far more fans to sue Patreon under the same terms.

My understanding is that it's "up to" $10,000, not over $10,000. But that's still pretty big news.

Patreon changed some rules in 2020, so going forward, people with accounts in 2020 aren't going to be able to sue, but people who left around the time of Sargon may have a case.

Sorry I don't have many details. I'm working off memory from some article I had read at 430 this morning... But this could end up costing patreon A LOT of money.

Patreon by its very nature is incredibly vulnerable to torturus interference lawsuits.

Their busienss model is simple they are the middle men between two parties patrons and creators, they do not actually create content in and of themselves and simply take a cut from facilitating the deal. The single stupidest thing you can do when you have this business model is to pick sides in a political fight, and its a miracle they havent gone through these kinds of lawsuits sooner.

Patreon did update their TOS, but it goes against California law and other clauses in their TOS. Article Specifically that "Patreon demands all users abide by JAMS Streamlined Arbitration Rules and Procedures" which means no grouping. Then you have California law SB 707, which basically states if a company compels arbitration they are on the hook for the arbitration costs. Even with their TOS change it probably won't even hold up in court and anyone before 2020 can file a claim.

Update: Lauren Southern has contacted the lawyer who assisted Owen Benjamin. Shit is about to get very very real for Patreon.
I had heard she was talking to her legal counsel a few hours after the sentence was given. It seems she liked what she heard.

Will they be as fucked as that newsite who took Hulk Hogan's sextape?

even worse legally speaking the Hogan paper was kind of expected to occasionally do shit like that. They had some reasonable expectations of being protected by the first and had a legal team that could handle this.

Pateron is a middleman that finically connects fans with creators and takes a cut of that in return. Getting involved politically is the worst thing they can do because it legitemently fucks with their entire business model and to make it even worse opens them up for all of the tortuous interference clauses in the law.

Now their being fucked by a clause in their own rule book they created to protect themselves, then changed that rule after the fact and then lied about doing so to the court which you bad idea so yeah.....their fucked.

It was so fucking disappointing to see Patreon go woke. Providing payment processing to media creators of all types for a simple percentage cut was such a fucking good idea, and they did it competently. It was such an obvious and effective counter to the old media gatekeepers, a way for authors and artists and anyone who could generate interest to get paid by their customers without fucking around with the arcane and exploitative minutae of credit card processing and finance in general.

Oh well. Best if they go broke. Better that than leftist filth thinking they can get away with smearing cultural marxism all over the joint.

I think Patreon was counting on the idea that the Far Left were the future

And that competition could be stopped from arising by getting rid of their platforms legally or accusing them of bigotry and then blocking em

If it's a good enough idea, then someone else will take Patreon's place when they go down. Hopefully, whichever company that does will learn from Patreon's destruction what not to do.

Without visa/mastercard and the others behaving like a normal company it's not likely. Honestly with the increasing creep from the left i think one day even donating to a conservative will be banned as ''hate''.

They just have to keep redefining terms as much as possible and saying they don’t have biases or that they’re going after “Far Right” and never truly identifying anyone who is “just Right” and such

Biggest barriers to entry or replacement would be some tech companies that hold a platform and government working together

If they don't start acting like normal companies soon, we're going to end up with parallel economies; with the regressive left in one, and everyone else in the other. This will inevitably lead to civil war, and they don't really have a plan for what to do against people who won't just slink away when verbally assaulted, and will quite literally try to kill them.
