Thanks you guys, I’ll check it out. I’ll also look for books on the culture of the US during this period. Also, I might take you up on your offer, Fried C.
Yeah just hit me up in the PMs and I can give you a few popular historical schools, historians and theories popular in the late 1800s-1900s.

Also for the game itself, Mark Russel is the only one who necessarily knows why it is you are actually going to the arctic. It's up to him if he wants to either make the reason totally public, tell just a select few, or lead you all to believe you are just trying to be the first to the North Pole.
Officially to the public, the press and the general workers of the expedition its to reach the north pole first for America!

For the upper-echelons of the expedition and trusted friends/acquaintances of Mark's he's told them the true goal of the expedition is to find the entrance and explore the hollow earth.

He has to protect his ego somehow if there's no entrance to the hollow earth.

Double posting you'll have to forgive, but the initial Expedition Equipment list is up on my characters sheet.

It'll probably see additions and editing as other concerns and ideas for equipment we might need comes up.

I will take a look and see if I can think of any additions. Don't worry about double-posting, we don't have a rule against it.

Someone who can speak inuit or is one would certainly be useful.

Okay. Then I will make a pair of half-siblings from Alaska. Their father was a gold miner who bought his son with him at the tender age of three, married an Inuit lady, and had the daughter. The daughter is the better Inuit speaker and the son is an excellent cartographer. Both are good marksmen. I will write up their profiles soon.

Would be pretty useful, goodness knows we can't have a proper early 20th century expedition without a bunch of native porters/workers that we'll exploit!

So someone that can speak Inuit would be a very helpful thing to have.

Sir, are you actually saying we need to know what the porters are saying?

Also, I saw this movie in 1989 and it was enormously influential on my six-year-old brain...

By the way, please look over the Expedition Equipment on my sheet for equipment that'll be provided by Mark as general equipment.

And consider anything listed for important members to be accessible/provided to the PCs.

Name: Thomas O'Malley

Age: 26

Sex: Male

Bio: A blonde-haired, cheerful outdoorsman, Thomas grew up on the edge of American civilization in the territory of Alaska. At the tender age of three, Thomas' father brought him up north in the hopes of striking it rich, convinced that he would find gold in that remote territory just like he almost did during the Californian Gold Rush. This time, he wanted to be ahead of the game.

Inevitably, his father fell in love/lust with a local native woman and before the year was out, Thomas had a new mother with a sister on the way. Thomas grew up among both rugged frontiersmen and the noble savages of the far north. He often helped his father prospect for gold, but Thomas' talents lay more in hunting, fur trapping, and cartography. Although he is without a formal education, Thomas can read, write, and has made messing with new-fangled cameras a bit of a hobby. Inevitably, Thomas grew up and during the height of the gold rush his father predicted, served as a guide, map-maker, and translator. Unfortunately, his father died before he could strike it rich and with less money coming in thanks to the end of the gold rush and, thus, new migrants, Thomas and his sister agreed to sign on to a mysterious new expedition.

Name: Amaruq O'Malley

Age: 23

Sex: Female

Bio: The half-Inuit child of a man more concerned with finding gold than his doting wife and young children, Amaruq quickly developed the skills needed to survive and a strong bond with her older brother. A sharp wit with a dry sense of humor, Amaruq quickly proved to be a polymath, speaking the dialects of half a dozen tribes, English, Russian, and a little bit of the languages of other migrants and prospectors seeking to make their fortune in Alaska.

Known as quite a native beauty, Amaruq has received a fair bit of romantic attention, but has of yet sought no male company outside of her brother or recently deceased father. She has a talent for sharpshooting, dog-sledding, and has often played the role of translator between Inuit people and settlers. It is said that she takes after her mother in looks, but it can never be denied that she has a restless heart like her brother and father.Like her brother, she seeks adventure and fortune with the death of not only their father, but also their mother due to illness.

Which players would that be, just to be clear?

Also, in case anyone was wondering that whole bit about John Quincy Adams wanting to send an expedition to the hollow earth is an actual historical event.

Harlock

I should have expected that really

Born to a military family in British India Thomas spent much of his youth travelling Northern India. He grew accustomed to the outdoors and learned how to look after himself on the frontier. During this time he met many of the local cultures gaining an interest in anthropology.

He was sent to England for a formal education which he found largely boring until he found himself in a lecture on ancient civilisations. While the mysteries of the old world were intriguing on their own it was the hint of immense treasure that really caught his attention.

He attended university and became a member of the Royal Society, a group dedicated to broadening the knowledge of mankind. As part of this group he joined in on an expedition to South America in search of Eldorado which proved fruitless.

During this time he also developed an interest in the finer things money could buy. His interests broadened from exploration to the other experiences a man could enjoy in the world earning him a less than noble reputation.

Armed with a classical education and some field experience Thomas returned to India and set about delving into its grand temples, usually without the permission of local authorities. After narrowly avoiding a beheading for desecrating a princely tomb he turned to Egypt and the growing fascination with lost tombs among the sands.

Over several expeditions Thomas acquired great wealth and promptly spent it all on luxuries and frivolities. Never more than a few days from bankruptcy he became less picky about the type of work he undertook serving as guide to graverobbers and pillagers from Indochina to Mexico finding a niche in criminal circles.

He was expelled from the Royal Society and blacklisted from official expeditions leaving him willing to join any mission that paid a decent retainer.
