Theodore Roosevelt sat in his desk, musing over the mornings paper, though his mind was on other matters. He then heard a knock on the door as those matters preceded walked in.

"Mark my good friend, have a seat." Theodore said, putting the paper down, taking a minute to straighten himself, and clearing his throat before looking Mark Russel in the eyes and saying. "I thank you for coming out here in such short notice with so little word on the matters at hand. Allow me to get straight to it."

"In 1818 an Army officer by the name of John Cleves Symmes Jr. came up with a radical theory on the nature of the earth and the planets as a whole, that it was hollow at both poles and within these holes was another world on the inside, possibly inhabited by peoples and species unknown to man. As ludicrous as it may sound, my predecessor John Quincy Adams took the man seriously and was fully prepared to send an expedition to discover it and make contact with those new peoples, and would have done so had he not lost his reelection bid to Old Hickory."

"I tell you all of this because since the ill-fated Polaris expedition we have had evidence suggesting that it may just be the truth. One fact known to exceedingly few people is this. While on their way to north pole, they discovered this." Roosevelt then pulls an old photograph, and hands it to Mark.

On it is a section of a plant with forked leaves and a decent sized piece of fruit, a bit larger than an apple but oddly shaped like a figure eight, frozen in the ice. "This was the first oddity discovered, and at first was dismissed as some unidentified species that had somehow found its way to the frozen north. That was, until this was recently discovered by the Norwegian expeditions."

Theodore this time produces a physical object, pulling it out and placing it on top of the desk. Its the top half of a skull of a creature, almost a cross between ape and human in appearance with two large canines coming from the top and an enlarged brow. "The knowledge of this discovery has so far gone unknown to the general public, it was recovered quickly and paid for by an American whaler in the arctic, who then sold it to the Smithsonian. They have since verified that it matches no known creature, is quite new, and most importantly, it's authentic."

Roosevelt pauses, collects himself and then says "I believe firmly that Symmes may very well be Copernicus successor, and that there is a world on the inside, inhabited by something at the very least human like. And I believe you are just the man to take on this expedition. I don't want to have to go to congress over this, spend American dollars on this endeavor and be laughed out of office with my proposal. But if this is the reality, that there is a second New World, I'll be damned if it isn't an American to discover it. So I give you this information, promise what resources I can to assist you, and if you can succeed, your name will be said right alongside Columbus as a man who changed the entire course of human history." Theodore stops for a moment, then looks directly at Mark and says "so, how about it Mark? Are you ready to make history?"

Character Creation

For characters, feel free to pick anyone who would make sense to be on an arctic expedition, and it doesn't have to be limited to Americans. Examples include but are not limited to scientists, doctors, soldiers, naval officers, pinkertons and inuit guides. Anything of the early 1900s that makes sense is fine. Your character sheet should look like this.

Name:
Age:
Sex:
Bio:
Skills:
Equipment:

All of these should be fairly self explanatory, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Gameplay
I'll be running things off a modified GURPs system for mechanics and to determine rolls. That's not something you need to worry much at all about however. Filling out the sheet is enough for me to work with, as I will be handling all rolls myself, and you merely need to post actions. When making actions in the IC that are possible to fail, for example, shooting at an enemy, trying to scale a cliff wall, sneaking into a camp, please write it out as an attempt to do so, rather than saying you successfully did so.

Good: I fire my shotgun at the guy aiming for his head.
Bad: I blow the guys brains out with my shotgun, killing him instantly.

Name: Countess Zofia Ewelina Kwilecka In English in the early 20th century always referred to as: Countess Sophia Kwileckzy.
Age: 27
Sex: Female

Bio: Born into the noble family of the Kwilecki, Countess Sophia was an intemperate adventuress from her youngest days, raising hounds for the hunt and tearing across field obstacles cheerfully from side saddle. A crack shot with pistol and carbine, her days of rabble-rousing fun were brought to an end when her young husband was suspected of conspiring against the Tsar for Polish independence. They were exiled to Siberia, where he died of pleurisy brought on by the weather. The newly widowed Countess, without much thought, managed to cajole a Cossack officer into taking her with him to Port Arthur, where she boarded a steamer for Shanghai.

In Shanghai, she bought a camera and started taking pictures and selling them to newspapers; this paid the bills for a while, but when she started to run out of money for brandy and cigarettes she convinced an American missionary to buy her a ticket on the APL line back to San Francisco to keep her from becoming a fallen woman in the den of eastern iniquity.

Arriving in the United States, she used her literacy to write a book entitled "Lost Love in the Taiga: A Tragedy of the Poles in Siberia" and proceeded to embark on the anti-Russian lecture circuit made popular by the anti-Jewish pogroms. Running out of money again, she was hired as a Girl Stunt Reporter by the New York Herald to report on the expedition with her camera and a portable typewriter. Always a firm believer that adventure was better with dogs about, she bought a Mameluke to be her companion to the northern climes, which she named Ruger.

Skills: Writing, translation; can speak French, Polish, Russian, Chinese, English; photography, shooting, horseback riding, dog training.
Equipment: A Savage 99 in .30-40 Krag and two Browning M1900s. Portable typewriter, Zeiss binoculars, a No.3 Folding Pocket Kodak, a spring-loaded knife, two person tent (for her and the dog, of course, SIR!), bedroll, pemmican cans, several bottles of brandy, Apollinaris in sealed lightweight metal bottles, a few cases of Turkish "Abdullah" cigarettes, appropriate number of changes of clothes including split riding skirts, corsets, and boots.

I'll be apping a professor type. The kind who gets bored of the lecture halls and likes to go adventuring — a staple member of the 19th-century science-fiction party. WIP below:

Name: Anton Arfwed Abderhalden
e92050ffeff5788883b6db0efdd940a4--beard-pictures-awesome-beards.jpg
Age: 52
Sex: M
Biography:
A man at the top of his game, currently a tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a master of the natural sciences, with an especial focus on botany, physiology, and medicine, and has dabbled heavily in such fields as anthropology, classical history, geology, and zoology as matters of related and/or personal interest.

Born in New York City in 1851 to middle-class Swiss immigrants, Anton's quick wit and dexterous mind quickly became apparent to his parents and teachers. The nascent public school system was eager to hurry him along, and he was forced to adapt and grow against the bullying of the older teenagers. When the American Civil War began, and his uncle and older cousins marched Southward to fight for emancipation, he seized the opportunity to tag along without the knowledge of his parents. He learned the barbaric art of surgery in the white tents of the battlefield, serving as a nimble-footed assistant to the nurses and doctors.

After the conclusion of the war, a German physician who had volunteered in the Union army took Anton under his wing and brought him back to Europe to be formerly and properly educated. At the Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin he re-learned anatomy, physiology, and medicine, and at the affiliated Königlich-Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften he studied all manner of natural sciences before focusing his attentions on the investigation of the living world.

The austere atmosphere of the academy was stifling to him, however, and in 1871 he began to take sabbaticals to North Africa and the Middle East. Finding the change in environment and the opportunity to engage in "field work" much to his liking, he decided to devote the next few years of his life to colonial/scientific expeditions. After a series of minor journeys, he became one of the protégés of Wilhelm Junker and was his close assistant in East Equatorial Africa from 1875 - 1881, moving between Khartoum and Zanzibar. Anton's planned return to civilized lands via the Nile in 1881 was delayed by the Mahdist Uprising, but after some fighting was able to return to Berlin in 1882 and present on some of the expedition's more recent findings.

He would remain in Berlin compiling the expedition's findings, getting married, and preparing to rejoin his mentor until 1884, when the so-called "Scramble for Africa" began. From 1884-1890, he traveled between Germany's various African colonies, sometimes serving as a physician and sometimes to join short expeditions into yet-unmapped territories. Though the violence of rebelling natives was an ever-looming threat to European travelers in Africa, violence was hardly new to him and the prospect of studying new flora, fauna, and peoples was an irresistible bait.

In 1890, he returned to the United States with his wife and four children, having decided to focus on raising the next generation of gifted minds. He took up a post at the university of his birth city, where he has largely remained for the past 13 years (aside from several months-long returns to Africa, during which he became briefly acquainted with Messrs. Roosevelt and Russel).

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present your escort quest NPC.

001972_06.jpg

"Ladies and Gentlemen today we go to etch our names into history and forever raise America's prestige in the eyes of the world!" Mark Russel to the assembled expedition before departing from the port.

Name: Mark Russel
Age: 39
Sex: Male
Bio:

Sole owner of FDE(Fastidious Delver enterprises) LLC a mining company founded originally during the California gold rush by Mark's grandfather a jew who'd moved out from under the Russian Tsar in the hopes of a better life. Arriving in California he established a general store selling to miners at ridiculous prices caused by the influx of gold that was reinvested to capture the precious metal and precious stone market. Rapidly capturing large shares in both native and importation in both markets for precious materials.

Mark has inherited this business and life of wealth created by his forefathers and unlike the saying 'Wealth does not pass three generations', he's had the presence of mind to keep the cogs of his family's business turning properly. Even with his adventure hungry ways to find fresh plots of land for mining that has lead him to the far flung corners of the earth where he has collected an entourage of interesting characters.

A stanch capitalist Mark is a very cheerful fellow who adores company and miserable without and a fondness to the vice of gambling as he's prone to casually carousing with the middle class. Though he burns for fame beyond the simple prestige of his status.

His friendship with Teddy was struck up over their mutual love of nature... And shooting that nature as he's funded several game hunting expeditions with Teddy to Africa becoming a fine shooter himself.

Will we have NPC porters? I don’t really think you can have a 1903 expedition without porters...

We most certainly will!

Mark has hired a number of strapping lads to lug around the general equipment he's having brought along and a number of other people of various skills to handle the trite parts of the expedition.

I really want to do this RP. In particular, I'd like to play the role of a young, aspiring paleontologist. He's a very bright academic, an energetic youth, and a kind gentleman; however, he's socially awkward, naïve to the ways of the world, not as smart as he thinks he is, and a bit too eager-to-please.

How much history and science should I research before trying to roleplay as this character?

I'd like to reserve twin reporters to cover this expedition. They are male and female and almost identical. I will work on their skills later.

I would look into the history of major fossil discoveries, so you can position your character's mind in the right time period.

For example, the Burgess Shale, which transformed the way we think about the diversity of ancient life (hello Anomalocaris and Hallucigenia), won't even be discovered for another 6 years. The first Ediacaran fossils have been found but no one believes that they're actual fossils.

Larger fossils are a bit more common by this time — lots of dinosaurs and their contemporaries have been unearthed already. Oh, and T. rex was discovered last year, but it doesn't have a proper name yet. And Velociraptor isn't due for another twenty or so years.

Fun stuff!

There's going to be more reporters than actual explorers. You're probably from a rival Newspaper.

As much as you want. If you want history notes I can help you. Done a lot of historiography so I can help you with historical theories and ideas contemporary to the time period.

Also for the game itself, Mark Russel is the only one who necessarily knows why it is you are actually going to the arctic. It's up to him if he wants to either make the reason totally public, tell just a select few, or lead you all to believe you are just trying to be the first to the North Pole.

Thanks you guys, I’ll check it out. I’ll also look for books on the culture of the US during this period. Also, I might take you up on your offer, Fried C.
