Scenario: Tomorrow, He Jiankui, the PRC doctor infamous for attempting human genetic engineering and inexplicably disappearing shows up again at the US embassy in Chaoyang District Beijing and attempts to defect, claiming that he had spent the past three years locked in the PRC's equivalent of cheyenne mountain as part of a team working on human genetic augmentations with the aim of weaponization/creating Khan Noonien Singh and carrying a flashdrive full of related documents of unclear authenticity agreeing with his story, but not in a manner useful for replicating his supposed work. The PRC denies everything and demands his return.

Real answer probably the same thing we have done with Soviet scientists that defected, accept them and their research and try to prevent them from getting assassinated.

He wouldn't use the embassy path.

Embassies in authoritarian countries are usually heavily monitored, because the secret police know that where defectors are going to go.

Dr He would try to get from China to Russian Siberia and then from there to Japan.

And from Japan to USA, where he can safely present himself to US officials (China withdrew the majority of their spies after their OPs got exposed).

At least, that's what I'd do.

Or maybe he goes to Trump and Co first.

That would be for the best, as Trump and Co can begin producing their first batch of Captain America Mk. Is in preparation for D-Day.
