One of the most interesting concepts for a web series I’ve seen in a while. The audio could use some refinement (the sound effects are a bit excessive, and I couldn’t understand Charlie’s song without reading the lyrics), and I’m not sure how Charlie’s rehabilitation plot is gonna intersect with the political power games Alastor will clearly involve them in, but overall I quite enjoyed it, and would love to see it get picked up.

There’s also this spin-off series in the same setting. More episodic and comedy-focused, but still worth keeping an eye on, I think.

It's like we've achieved the platonic solid of DeviantArt.
A couple of the jokes really landed, but most were stale.
Could be worse. I expected the Platonic ideal of Tumblr.

I'm with you on the jokes. A lot of them fell flat, and need a little work on the delivery.

Something tells me that if it gets picked up, some of the raunchier jokes will have to go. That one visual gag in Helluva Boss about murdering a cheating wife while she's in bed with her paramour? Yeah. That ain't going to fly on Netflix.

Huh. I heard about this elsewhere, and somehow didn't connect it with Hazbin Hotel.

I mean, considering that it is a full length pilot done completely by amateurs out of love for the idea and the medium... I feel like the fact that the biggest complaint is that some of the jokes fell flat is pretty damn impressive when you think about it.

So... as it turns out, a longtime friend of mine used to be a freelance animator. And not only does he know some of the people behind Hazbin Hotel, he was invited to do some freelance work on it.

He really likes Hazbin Hotel. He praised the animation quality and he says that the premise has promise. Ultimately, he's rather skeptical about the show's future. The subject matter isn't for kids, which is where cartoons make their money advertising to. So it's going to be an uphill battle to secure funding, even if Netflix or Youtube Red pick it up. Maybe if this came out before Youtube fucked over monetization, it would have had a chance.

But still, an animated pilot this long from a team of freelancers? Outside of a major studio? That's hella impressive.

The thing about animation is that it's expensive. I think he said that Hazbin Hotel funded itself on $400 a shot, which is nice, but it's hard to keep an animation team together with that shoestring budget. Freelance work is great for a passion project or building up a portfolio, but 'professional' freelance animators have a second job that pays the bills. So they tend to drift from project to project, and if Hazbin Hotel can't drum up the funds, the production team isn't going to stay around much longer.

In other words, Hazbin Hotel needs an angel investor. Hopefully not one as fickle as the Radio Demon.

Yes. Unless he wants to get dysentery and die shitting his guts out.

You know there are ways of drinking unclean water with less risk right? So, you can afford to not be picky when the alternative is death by dehydration.

Moving on from a sand-sea of metaphors, what's your opinion on Hella Boss?
I liked it, even if the cutaway gags were too many overall, the timeline of the pilot was all over the place, and the actual plot of the episode was resolved in one scene.

On the other hand, the writers had to establish their characters first, so cutaways were used. I did like that Moxxi and Millie were a happy heterosexual couple with the only issue (so far) being Blitzo having no sense of discretion or privacy. That's something I haven't seen in years.
