I have a question, we hear about the ME Muslims all of the time. So how bad are the Muslims in SE Asia?
Indonesia is WAY diffrent and often incorporate older ideas into Islam.
Can attest, as someone who was born & spent his early childhood years in Indonesia and continues to keep up with its internal politics to the best of my ability, that this is
usually the case. Most Indonesian Muslims are pretty chill towards non-Muslims, reject Wahhabism and of a syncretic mind towards their native traditions. However in recent decades, there's been a push to bring Indonesian Islam more in line with Middle Eastern Sunni Islam and to crack down on those elements the Arab/Arab-Indonesian ulema (religious leaders) consider too 'lax' or 'improper'. The former crowd are also more inclined towards Indonesian nationalism while the latter possess a global, pan-Islamist outlook.
Previously the former category of Muslims were usually called
abangan and were mostly from poorer, rural communities while the latter were dubbed the
santri and tended to be from the urban middle class who could afford to attend Islamic boarding schools (
pesantren, hence the name). Nowadays it's more likely (at least outside of Indonesia itself) that you will hear them be called
'traditionalists', or those who subscribe to the concept of
'Islam Nusantara' (the name given to Indonesia's pluralistic, explicitly anti-extremist and indigenous-tinted Islamic tradition), vs.
'modernists' - that's to say, contrary to what you might first assume based on those terms, modernists are the more fundamentalist sort of Muslim in Indonesia.
This is an ongoing social conflict, BTW. The modernists were most recently represented by fundamentalist factions like
the FPI or Islamic Defenders' Front, who basically functioned as an Islamic Indonesian equivalent to the KKK for over 20 years, and the Indonesian branch of the pan-Islamist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir; they tended to be led by Arab-Indonesians who exalt & try to ape Arab culture while holding indigenous traditions in contempt, similar to how the Iranian Mullahs shit on actual Persian traditions and regard the Muslim conquest of their country to be the greatest thing that ever happened to Iran. The government, dominated by traditional-leaning types since Joko Widodo's election in 2014, has banned both of the above organizations and promoted the 'Islam Nusantara' model (indeed, even gave it the name in the first place) as part of a broader crackdown on extremism.
