Figured that it was high time we had one of these.

Warhammer 40,000-Halo Merged setting

Instead of the typical 'faction A ends up in universe B' story that is far too common and that I tend to gravitate towards, I thought I'd try something different.

While this could work in ‘modern’ 40k, I think it would be easier to fit in with the somewhat early is days of the Great Crusade. As it allows semi-good-sized factions like the UNSC and Covenant to more easily fit into the setting without raising questions about why they haven’t been heard about ‘in canon’ or the like before. As in 30k the setting is still mostly unexplored both in and out of universe.

Plus, if I really want to be ambitious, I could have this encounter have all sorts of interesting knock-on-effects on 30k and the Horus Heresy…
  • Another idea: set this in the fan-made Roboute heresy timeline?

  • I’ll probably buff/tweek the firepower calculations on both sides somewhat for the sake of keeping the story interesting. As IMO, a good story trumps weapons calculations.

That said, I’ll probably have the IoM forces (probably a single expeditionary fleet or so) for a majority of the story being stuck in UNSC space without access to reinforcements or communications to the wider galaxy. As this is the IoM early on when it wasn’t operating ass-backwards. And assuming that I want to keep the Covenant near their canon size, they would not stand much of a chance against the IoM in the longer term. Having one of the Primarchs show up would probably be overkill.
  • The Covenant occupies a large portion of the Orion wing in Halo canon. How many planets they have is anyone's guess. The UNSC originally had 800 planets, 600 outer colonies, and 200 inner colonies. The 600 outer colonies are all gassed, and several dozens of the inner colonies are destroyed by the war’s end in canon.

The UNSC and the IoM
Obviously, a great deal of thought will need to be put into how the two human factions will interact and how willing the UNSC will be when it comes to integrating into the IoM.

Spartans and Space Marines:
I see Spartans being faster and more agile than Space Marines but the Space Marines are more tankier. Which incidentally fits into what both were ‘designed’ to be. The Spartans were designed as Black Ops and strike teams against the Insurrectionists. Whereas the Space Marines were made more-or-less as super-soldiers to fight head-on against alien enemies on the battlefield.

Slipspace drive:
Probably be easier to have it function as some sort of variant of warp-travel, albeit one sort of like how the Tau’s work in 40k. It only ‘skims the surface’ of the Warp; so it doesn’t require astropaths, is safer but also somewhat slower when compared to ‘actual’ warp travel. Plus, remember that in 30k the warp is much calmer than it is in 40k; so I could probably get away with the idea that this form of FTL could be roughly equal to standard warp travel.

If I do use this idea, Covenant warp-drives function in a similar manner as UNSC ones, skimming the edge of the immaterium, making short hops from place to place and avoiding most of the danger. However, their drives recharge more rapidly than UNSC ones, allowing for a succession of quick hops across vast spans of lightyears.

The Forerunners and the Covenant religion:
The Forerunners could probably be modified to fit into Warhammer 40k as a setting by having them be Old Ones. Or alternatively, have them just be some other ancient civilization that, while not quite as Old as the Eldari, Olds Ones and Necrons, is still pretty high up there.

Regardless, I think I can get away with not having to modify too much of the Covenant backstory and religion from what we see in Halo. Though I’ll probably have to change or drop the Halo array, as it simply does not fit in 40k lore and trying to make it fit would be too much of a hassle in my opinion. I simply cannot think of a way to easily integrate them and the near-destruction of the Flood into the setting without it being convoluted or outright stupid.

The UNSC:
One of the many disparate ‘fragments of mankind’ that existed after Old Night; one which, while it did lose much of its technologies, still withstood it better than most did. So elements of it would be redesigned, mostly in aesthetics to make it closer to Warhammer, though I cannot stress enough that this would be slight changes at most to make the UNSC feel more compatible with the larger setting.

Possibly have something similar to the false ‘Imperium of Man’ encountered in the first Horus Heresy novel; aka the human empire that thought it was based on Earth, but wasn’t in reality. So maybe the UNSC thinks it really thinks it’s ‘Earth’ really is Earth, but it is not.

The Flood:
Assuming that I want to include them in the setting, they could have been some sort of bio-weapon that got out of hand. They might even be quasi-warp entities, like the so-called Enslavers in 40k canon that wound up in our reality somehow or other.

Or, if I want to go with ArchWarhammer’s fan-theory that the Tyranids were created by the Old Ones as a means of combating the Necrons and C’tan, perhaps the Flood were created by the Old Ones to be something similar.

Alternatively, they can just be some gribblies from beyond the Galaxy that were defeated by the Old Ones or the like centuries back.

Regarding UNSC AI’s:
I confess I probably need to do more research into the Ad-Mech’s views on AI’s and the like at that time and exactly what they think constitutes a ‘machine spirit’ verses an Abominable Intelligence. Given that USNC ‘smart’ AI’s are based on human brains, they might get a pass from the Ad-Mech. As I said, more research is required.

What Astartes Legion is being used?
While I’m tempted to use either the Salamanders or Blood Angels, I confess I have something of s soft spot for using the Luna Wolves or the Alpha Legion- if it’s the Alpha Legion, this would probably be before Alpharius and Omegon where found.

A post-Halo 3 story I had in mind would actually be focused on Blue Team returning to the UNSC. Mankind is no longer under existential threat so they aren't on constant active service. These unstoppable war machines now have to try and make sense of a galaxy in which "shoot first" isn't always an option whilst their old lives begin to bleed into their present (The Spartan II program's origins become public knowledge and a lot of families want to know what happened to their children). Meanwhile, minor prophets are trying to consolidate power in the various Covenant splinters as the Arbiter begins his rebuilding of Sangheili glory. As for humanity, in the midst of rebuilding into the galaxy's great power, the civilian government and the UNSC are having falling outs as the meaning of "emergency powers and their shelf life" is heavily debated. At the same time, ONI is getting much too big for its boots.

All in all, it's now a very messy universe, with a growing danger in the background.

The true villains of it, manipulating things from behind the scenes, are the Forerunners. At least, a sad echo of their former glory. They'd be a migrant fleet of ancient, breaking down vessels looking to reclaim their former glory and an avenue towards this is galactic destabilisation and awakening their greatest military leader: The Didact.

These Forerunners, much like their ancient Flood enemy's depiction in the games, are scarcely a fraction of what they once where (light rifles would have nothing on ancient Forerunner weaponry). And yet they are still a huge threat, especially should the Didact take command of their dispirited forces.

In all this, a more personal goal for Blue Team eventually becomes finding Master Chief, which leads them to Requiem and a few rather fateful encounters.

Come to think of it, this Forerunner remnant would be somewhat sympathetic. The only people they hate more than humanity are probably their forebears, who threw away the birthright that was the Milky Way. Their survival as a species is a miracle in of itself through no grand plan of those who ruled long ago, those who deemed their civilisation a failure and made no plans to preserve it. Indeed, as I understand it, the plan for those who survived the firing of the rings was going to another galaxy, eschewing technology, and slowly fading into oblivion as atonement.

As you can imagine, some Forerunners might have disagreed with that. Hence this remnant's existence.

Okay, so I’m digging up an old idea of mine and giving it another go.

Basically, a chunk of the Confederacy of Independent Systems from the first half of the Clone Wars ends up in the Halo Universe early on in the Human-Covenant War. That is, somewhere in 2534. With the CIS teaming up with the UNSC against the Covenant.

Before I go further, I must stress that I will be drawing almost entirely on pre- 2008 Star Wars lore for the CIS. So completely excluding the CGI The Clone Wars series. This is from the simple fact that much of the CGI series clashes with the pre-established material of Star Wars Legends. And trying to reconcile the two is almost impossible.

Moving on, by the time the story picks up, it’s been several months to two years since the CIS fragment was transported into the Halo universe. There was understandably some pandemonium and chaos at first in response to being inexplicably transported into an unfamiliar galaxy, as well as subsequent reorganizations, but things have more or less returned to normal stability.

Given the size of the Covenant and UNSC, the CIS will likely have around 200 major systems. Note that not all these would be shipyards and foundry worlds.

Additionally, this will not include systems that have been lost to the Republic at the time of the transference to the Halo universe. As this war is going to be complicated enough without throwing in Republic Remnants. In short, the point of this is to make the CIS powerful enough to change the tide of battle against the Covenant, but not enough to do so single-handedly without cooperating with the UNSC or to curb-stomp the Covenant.

For characters, the Confederacy will contain a mix of humans, aliens, and droids. As back in classic legends continuity, the CIS had quite a few organic commanders and soldiers; I’d like to have a few of them show up. I will try to use Legends characters when possible but will throw in a mix of original characters as well to round out the cast.

• Some CIS characters that will show up include:
◦ Dooku
◦ Grievious
◦ Rune Haako
◦ Gizor Dellso
◦ Kedu Ultho
◦ Marath Vooro

When it comes to the match-up between Halo and SW, my idea is that the CIS’s ships and weapons are roughly on par with their Covenant counterparts. Regarding FTL, Hyperdrives are faster than Slipspace. And my (tentative) plan is that the CIS just starts spamming probe droids or the like to map out the hyperspace lanes. As the CIS doesn't have to map out all of the Milky Way; From what I can find the Covenant only owned a large part of Orion's arm. Mind you, it'll still take the CIS time to pull off. Space is big.

• Instead of trying to depict everything, the story is to be divided up into Episodic arcs. These would be about 4 to 7 chapters in length.
◦ First arc is the first contact between the CIS, UNSC and Covenant via the Spirit of Fire.
◦ Second would be during an early major CIS/UNSC offensive.
◦ Other arcs are To Be Decided, but will probably be 1 to 2 more.

As a final aside, I will also be drawing heavily on the Republic Commando game. Both in terms of having the Force and Force-users being uncommon within the story. As well as the gritty asthetic. Both as a way of helping the CIS fit a little more into Halo as a setting and, in scenes away from the battlefield, help provide more contrast.

Because of this, while the humble B1 battledroid won’t be completely devoid quirks, the moments where they are used as comic relief will be much more understated. Thus bringing their characterization more in line with what we saw in The Phantom Menace and the 2003 Clone Wars series, ironically enough. We will also see several enemies from those games, such as Genosians soldiers.

Any comments, questions, and so on are welcomed, along with anyone whose more familiar with the Halo side of things willing to give me a hand.
