Well, since I started playing MSG:BO2, I guess I should start posting here too. For those wondering what I'm talking about, about two says ago the game "Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operations 2" was opened for the western public. It's a third person shooter where you control a variety of Mobile Suits, including Gundams, as a mercenary. The gameplay itself is fairly standard from what I was able to experience, but don't expect shenainigans like the animes. The MS control like tanks, and every hit counts. There're also advances to the classes the MS are divided into: Support, Raid, and General. You play either in a Ground map or a Space map. Some MS can only be used for ground maps, others only for space maps. Naturally these specialized MS have advantances over the MS that can be used on both maps.

I want to take a moment to talk about the unsung heroes of The Federation for a moment. The unsung heroes that are the pilots of the RB-79 Mobile Suit.

The RB-79 is a refit of an initial civilian model construction pod with little done to improve it but slapping a 180mm gun on top of its head. It had paper thin armor for a Gundam so virtually any hit from a distance is fatal and if the gap is closed a pilot was near completely defenseless in close combat as the manipulator arms were simply for lifting and placing girders and materials and are near useless for fighting. The gundams were also among the first mobile suits rolled out by the federation as during the one year war as thousands of these guys were rolled out in desperation.

Imagine being a forklift driver, and one day your country breaks out in war. Then you are told your forklift needs to be used in war, so they slap on a bit of armored plating and a recoilless rifle and tell you you gotta go duke it out with some tank battalions. Thats these guys, they did it, they were expendable, known as "mobile coffins", and their blood and sacrifice was instrumental in defeating Zeon by keeping the federation alive in the early days of the war. Like the PT Boats of WWII, they were expendable. So to me, the real hero isnt the guy who can step in, pilot some hotshot one of a kind mobile suit with top of the line weapons, armor, and specs, its the guy who willingly steps into a tiny suit not even meant for war with a single gun facing off against designed weapons of war, ready to give his all for his country. So salute the Ball Gundam, and its brave pilots who fought and died to save The Federation.

Those guys were as brave as hell, realistically, the absolutely most fearless corps anyone had in the war. People have recognised that, though:

Personally what I've always been frustrated with was the way they never really picked up and followed Sayla Mass after the original Gundam. She was an amazing character and the dichotomy of her life with her brother's should have provided much dramatic tension.

Honestly, the best bet for a Zeta rewrite involving Sayla would be a live action Universal Century movie series, one that focuses on making things less stupid and full of retcons.

Problem is that Sunrise probably wouldn't approve of it diverging far enough to fix many of the problems (like the fact that Spacenoids seem to go out of their way to prove the Titans were justified in attempted genocide) or rework the really stupid shit (like Laplace's Box).

That would be the problem, because Zeta was something of a disaster.

A new plant will come online in 2020, a fitting way to mark the 40th anniversary

As someone working in a machine shop, I greatly respect and admire the work these guys do when working the molds.

Here's some more stuff in the Build subfranchise:
Two new Gundam Build entries were announced a part of the Link Creators segment, Gundam Build Divers Series -Battlogue-(tentative) and a Live Action version of the Gundam Build series by director Katsuyuki Motohiro(Psycho Pass, Ajin), an avid Gunpla fan.

The Build Divers Battlogue series will feature fan voted Gunpla battles from the “Gunpla Big Vote” to be held on the 40th Anniversary webpage in April and the Live Action Gundam Build video, tentatively titled “New Gundam Build Series” will serve as the commemorative video for the Gunpla 40th Anniversary. Neither project were given a release window.

Not feeling real good about that live action thing, mostly because anime to live action doesn't really work well.

Yeah, but bear in mind, most of the action in Build Divers happens in virtual space. Which means we'll likely see a lot of CG motion cap digital avatars.

Well, its not a certainty that its going to be Build Divers... or Build Fighters for that matter. For all we know, they could create some kind of new Build subfranchise.

That said, we would be seeing a lot of CG for the Gunpla battles (if there are any), which may/may not be a good thing. Bandai got some good CG for IBO gunpla ads, but I dunno if they're willing to pay for that quality CG throughout a longer work.

Okay, here's the nitty and the gritty about it: if you have no experience with the Gundam franchise whatsoever, SEED's a good series to get started with.

If you've already cut your teeth on the Universal Century, SEED would have been a more Gattaca-inspired twist on the UC, except the writer wanted to add Korean drama elements to it... which ultimately torpedoed it, because the kind of character interactions Korean dramas have don't mix well with the moral ambiguity the people of the UC tend to have (factions are a different thing altogether).

If the Cosmic Era was just SEED, the Astray spinoffs and Stargazer, it would have been okay, but Destiny just amplified the "Korean relationship drama dynamic" disconnect with the "morally ambiguous war story narrative" to the point where the plot began to contort around the characters; supposed friction between the head writer and the voice talent also didn't help.

-Hino is a new type of person that has never been involved with Gundam before
-Usually when enemies show up all of a sudden inside a space colony, people try to explain why; Hino however thinks this is unimportant.
-What he thinks is important is the timing of the enemies showing up: He has a tendency to think of a story as a sequence of in-game events.
-The staff working on the show had to take Hino's ideas and add the missing logic to them.
-They purposely left holes in the setting so that the fans would bite and speculate, and thought they would use those for getting ideas, but unfortunately this did not work out at all.
-At first they did not find the bad response to Age especially surprising, as this had happened with other Gundam series countless times before.
-However, about three months in (around December) they started to feel that something was wrong
-With other series, this is the point that the viewers start to say positive things, but this was not the case with Age. Even though there were positive things said, the negative things overwhelmed them drastically.
-Even so the staff tried their best to make the show interesting.
-They started to get confidence around the time HG AGE-2 went on sale. Sales also stabilized around this point.
-They found it interesting how many users played around modifying Age kits (more than usual).
-One of Age's unique qualities was being able to see a lot of modded kits while the show was airing.

-The Vegan designs were order-made
-He remembered how unpopular Zanscar's designs were and himself wondered if it would be a good idea to go with these

The interviews with the main showrunner (Hino) are very illuminating.

In hindsight, Hino would have done a lot better had he directed the RPG version of AGE rather than the anime itself.

You know, like SEED's "Tomo Kimi no Senjou de", the GBA game where you can actually save Natarle.

Most of AGE's faults only showed in the 3rd arc, where we were introduced to naive tree-hugging moron Kio. First and second gens were good, third was shit, 4th arc barely limped across the finish line despite Flit and Captain Ash's badassery due to tree-hugging moron naivete winning the day.

You could do a decent Gundam live action.

At its heart the original Gundam and its sequels are war story. It would be easy to keep the general story without chnagi g much for it to he accepted in a wide market outside anime fans. Unlike Ghost in the Shell which deal with more existential topics like what what makes you human Gundam focus on the horrors of war and fighting for what you believe is right. Much easier topics to convey in a movie format without scenes that may fall flat.

The big problem is that you would need Blockbuster money or at least Games of Thrones money. Just look at the Pacific Rim or Transfromers. You can have nice looking gaint robots fights and Gundam is about the robots as much as it is about the war.

That means big action scenes that cost money. Anime live actions are generally a risk and have seen poor returns. After Ghost in the Shell I expect it will be a while before a large Amercian production company takes a chance on a anime again. While the live action adaptations from Japan lack the special effect and budgets I think to do Gundam justice.


What I never got was why anyone thought doing the anime and game concurrently was a good idea. They should have given the game a few months to work out a rough script, then started making the show.

It reminds me when Sci-fi channel tried to do a game/show with Defiance. Durning the off season they even had a way for player to influence the shows plotline though the game.

It also failed.
