Sci-Fi Tech Good Times with Future Weapons (the scifi Gun thread)

I've always liked the Fallout 3 varient of the laser rifle, both in that game as as a weapon in general. Laser weapons are probably some of my favorite sci-fi weapons, just because they're so uncommon compared to particle beams or some made-up energy weapon, so lasers actually feel fairly unique. The AER9 looks unique too, without the glowing bits and tactical gadgets that tend to clutter up such weapons, but not going to the extreme of "a box with a barrel poking out one end and a trigger on the other"....or in the case of the other well known sci-fi laser weapon, a box with a barrel poking out one end and a trigger on the other and also a skull.

As for weapons I "own", I actually do have a repainted dart firing MA5C from Halo. Don't have a picture handy, but it looks more or less like this one:

As far as the trend of sci-fi guns that still shoot bullets because realism or whatever goes, I think the MA5 stands out for kinda the same reason as the laser rifle, it's obviously recognizable as being a particular type of weapon, looks more or less practical, but also isn't cluttered up with a bunch of extraneous junk. It actually looks unique and disctinstice, as opposed to the common issue of "this is my giant pile of scopes, grips, pictiny rails, flashlights, and grenade launchers. There are many like it, but this one is mine. And also there's a gun mixed into that pile somewhere".

Yeah for some reason I really also liked the design of the Laser Rifle in the original X-Com UFO Defense (available on gog.com ;) ) because it looked like such a neat and simple design. Plus while it was barely more powerful then an alien plasma pistol, it was a quick firing weapon and had an infinite ammunition supply. Plus it was HUMAN made! Granted, it's just so much easier to equip everyone with Heavy Plasma rifles in the original game though.

The reboot game had more balance of weapons since plasma weapons just cost so much more and the new XCom Laser Rifle does look pretty neat, but that old pixelated model... I dunno… I just liked it quite a bit. Seemed so colorful and yet appropriately simple.

With all that said... I do love the idea, concept and design of the reboot X-Com's Laser Shotgun/Scatter Laser.

Z-6 Rotary Blaster Cannon... Accept no Substitutes.

Too bad there isn't a stun setting... it'd probably be just as lethal.

Gatling Lasers will be one of the greatest inventions future Humanity will develop (unless you are a Skaven in which case you already have invented gatling lasers). Of course thanks to odious gun laws, we will only be able to legally operate hand cranked gatling lasers.

Head over heels in love :)
I always thought the handguns found on the Liberator in Blakes 7 were rather odd looking and a little unwieldy, but no more so than the hand phasers in Star Trek TNG

Contrast that with the clip guns from Season four that had multiple ammo types (similiar in a way to Judge Dredd's Lawgiver) which probably also took inspiration in looks from the Mauser C96/Blastech DL-44

Important Question.

Yautja Shoulder Cannon...Though designed as a weapon for big game hunters, is the shoulder cannon more ideal for personal defense? Is it the ideal self defense weapon for young women who exercise the liberty to walk around dangerous urban jungles at night in fishnets or too much automation and reliance on alien technology? Should we just stick with a good blaster at your side.?

Mass Effect firearms are cool. Handheld railguns carrying thousands of shots of worth of ammunition material that is shot with the power of an HMG.

And also Fallout plasma guns. Nothing like turning the enemy into a goo puddle.

The Star Wars inspiration for the Season 4 guns is, to me, pretty clear...

Important Question.

If you aim it might make the skulls jingle in the wrong direction.

Well I always thought the Shoulder Cannon/Plasmacaster was a cool weapon in general. Plus as seen in Predators you can even turn it into a proper rifle type of weapon it seems. It was pretty handy weapon in the old Aliens Versus Predator games. Plus the shoulder cannon will always have my respect for actually shutting up Jesse Ventura for a while with chest bursting (no pun intended) decisiveness.

Watching Gears of War replays, I know it's the Lancer that gets a lot of the good press because... how cool is it to have an assault rifle with a chainsaw bayonet that you can use in melee and for epic execution style kills... but I will admit the Torque Bow seems to have it beat in retro style.

And straight forward lethality. You can really just reach out and touch someone with it.

Hmm - I wasn't expecting a fashion contest. Okay, my entry will be Emperor Femur from War Planets/Shadow Raiders. He may be self-centered and cowardly but he still gets good use from his shoulder cannon ... mostly because the cannon AI is braver than its wearer. 😀

Ah finally, another cultured fan of War Planets.

Though there are much better examples of fine weaponry from that series.

The Spidertanks of Planet Ice.

The Sonic Cannons of Planet Rock.

Even those cool fighters you only see for like a minute in the first episde of the TV series from Planet Tek which have the variable geometry.

Bone Soldiers were cool too. According to the lore bits on the website they had smart suits which complimented the poor intelligence and dutiful loyalty the solders of Planet Bone apparently had.

@Tiamat It's an Imperial Russian Navy "Boarding pistol" supposedly; the two are actually detachable and I suppose the idea was that it would be too much weight to carry a hatchet and a detachable buttstock for your Nagant when you were a sailor, so why not replace the detachable buttstock with a hatchet that was also a detachable buttstock?
