Did any of you give Three Kingdoms a try?

I've been pondering whether to give it a go.

Maybe the history books recorded it as a "pyrric victory" for your opponent?
The situation has been rectified through some saved games and restarts.

I was defending Ahmednegar and had to fight at night. I was also distracted and some Rajput archers broke through and went to the central plaza. I couldn’t get anyone to contest it in time. And so lost.

I was very ticked for about an hour.

Fortress defense in Empire comes down to fighting off wave after wave of attacks. Which requires you have a large enough garrison to man the walls. And forward redoubts.

When that siege of Goa was going on-I had three units on an inner bastion. And I couldn’t get them off in time before the artillery barrage smashed it. And they basically all died. Except for around six or so. When they had numbered nearly 200 men. All gone in a few seconds.

Harlock

I should have expected that really
Playing the Third Age mod and Elven archers might as well be armed with .50cal rifles :p Which I suppose is accurate to the source material :)

New Dev Blog dropped today...

They released the 2020 Roadmap of releases for Total War Saga: Troy. Still fairly ambivalent on the game despite it's persuasive price but while it's releasing with an Amazons faction (I guess that's cool?) and full mod support (if only the modders show up) multiplayer won't be showing up until November which means its DOA for many Total War Youtubers outside of campaign letsplays. Plus they'll have the traditional Free and Paid DLC content packs every few month it seems.

Of more interest, in Total War Warhammer II they'll be releasing a big and thick update for the Wood Elves who have been needing an update badly (along with Beastmen and Dwarfs but that's neither here nor there). It's going to be a new Lord Pack, focused on the Wood Elves and include some Free-LC including a new hero and more content depending on how much prior Warhammer content you have in your library. And since I have it all, yippee for me!

There will be a big DLC with Free content for Three Kingdoms as well and they say it's going to be a big one. I never played Three Kingdoms so... ehhh good for them. It's a popular game.

Also they are working on a card game with artwork that looks great individually (especially the surprisingly sultry looking Marie Antoinette) but when combined altogether looks pretty blah. Then again its a card game so more blah. This Total War Card game is called Total War Elysium and is currently in a closed beta phase.

And finally... Total War: Warhammer III details. One line mainly...

One event the current world situation has certainly put the crimpers on is us announcing our next major Total War title.

As you can imagine it’s all a bit chaotic here at CA, so please bear with us.

Bear?

BEAR?

BEAR?!?!?!

They shoulda taken the concept behind TW: Troy and gone full-out mythological with it. Gimme my Egypt faction with crocodiles shooting Ancient Egyptian Laser Beams, dammit!

But they already did that with Total War Warhammer!

With that said, I fully endorse an Age of Mythology style Total War with Creative Assembly using their own original creative (snigger) content.

Anyone planning on giving Troy: Total War a chance now that it's been released?

Anyone got any tips for fighting against Dworf's in MP? Not campaign level, but on the skirmish level?

I'm playing as Empire and Dorfs fucking shred me every time I play against them. In fact, Dworfs shred me whatever I bloody play. They seem to outrange everything, out armour everything and can hold against everything. How to break Dorf.

Dwarfs is one of the few bad matchups for the Empire in multiplayer. It's really a niche matchup and furthermore because the Empire is a combined arms style faction it's harder to master in multiplayer in general.

Turin actually released a video on it a few months ago.

Long story short... unbreakable front line (Flagellants and Sigmar's Sons) to let your missiles and cavalry do their work. If that's too expensive, then go with Swordsmen/Spearmen.

Then a strong amount of skirmish, crossbowmen for arching fire and handgunners/Stirlands Revenge for AP and most importantly a Lore of Metal caster. They have good armor debuffs. Crossbowmen are great because they can shoot Slayers and artillery crews and the like.

Turin recommends Markus Wulfhart for sniping enemy artillery and heroes and I guess that makes sense. I think having a Karl Franz on a mount to land and smash people or knock down gyrocopters could work as well. But Markus is cheaper.

Then you can fill out your army with anti-infantry cavalry though not anti-large ones obviously. And Knights of the Blazing Sun probably aren't worth it. Empire Knights are pretty cost effective but lack AP... but still they can disrupt backlines. Reiksguard are a fair bit better and sexier as well and less units to manage I suppose.

Turin also brought in two Witch Hunters for the AP missiles and to assassinate/kite characters.

The other alternative is to bring four great cannon (or Hellstorm Rocket Batteries) and make them come to you... but I've had that done to me as a Dwarf player and I was actually able to weather the storm, march up that hill and stomp the Empire nevertheless. :p

But yeah... the Empire vs. Dwarfs matchup is a combined arms matchup and apparently a kiting heavy one.

Thanks. Tried out the recommended and just got shredded regardless. Did better though.

Dwarves feel very, very, very cost effective for what they are. I mainly play skirmish battles and unless I bump the funds up massively dwarven units seem to be much better for their cost than anything else. I've messed around with Lizardmen, Skaven, VC, and Empire against them. So far the VC seem to be the best at it; but even then Dwarves just shred my units once they get them locked down; and they always seem to get them locked down.

EDIT: Full Vanguard deployment of night gobbo's, gobbo archers, squig boys and a few hangers turned out to work really well. Felt cheap though.

So playing another minor faction.

This time I’m playing the knights of Malta.

Limited unit roster and no universities for like...the first forty turns. If not more.

Conquest of North Africa took in game decades, dealing with multiple rebellions and also taking Egypt, then Syria and then Baghdad, and then Sardinia. To win the short campaign. But I gave up Baghdad to the Marathas to avoid having to hold it from Mameluke rebels.

Anyways, took Bavaria and am fighting the Dutch now who control all of Western Europe.

I was near the red financially for most of the campaign, and now have a few universities and am making some technological progress.

I’d say the knights of Malta-just two units are the best of the faction, if used well they can smash Barbary armies and Ottoman forces.

Anyways, the unit roster is limited. Elite Infantry-only one such unit. Though their fairly effective.

I’d say Malta is a more cavalry centric faction. With its Knights and Order cavalry. Especially in the early game. When the amount of money you have to maintain an army is limited, so defeating rebelling Tunisians requires decisive use of cavalry.

This campaign will probably take a long time. Both in game years and RL hours.

I have only a small toe hold on the European continent and I’m hoping the Marathas will conquer the Ottoman Empire.

Playing Malta I lost Bavaria after a disastrous field Battle, was outnumbered at least 3-1. Or 2.5-1.

I dealt the Dutch over 2,000 casualties where my losses were around 900. Problem is the Dutch army was over 3,000 men.

My own army was approx. 1200 or so.

Said it was a Valiant Defeat.

And it was.

At least you dealt them a pyrric victory.

This reminds me of Rome: TW where one of my armies got cut off when war with Brutii broke out, they destroyed three larger armies before falling in the fourth battle. It contributed greatly to eventual victory in the conflict but my failiure to relieve them still left me a bitter taste.
