So I recently got the game Syrian War. It's a real time strategy similar in the vein of Company of Heroes. I'm not one to usually play a game based on a current and ongoing war, but this game really captured my attention, especially that first mission.

Have any of you played it? And if so, what do you think?

Played all the games in the Warfare series, this is the third one. There aren't major changes in gameplay or so, i recommend the first Warfare in particular if you want to play US forces in the same system, because it's campaign portrays US forces in a fictional civil war in Saudi Arabia.

Okay, so this isn't the Iranian one where you play Assadists.

You do play Assadists (and Russian allies), at least in this third game in the series (Americans in first, Russians in second), but it is definitely not an Iranian game, it's Russian.

What are the names of the other games?

I honestly was confused when I saw this thread title in the Gaming forum. I was ready to be like... Oh geez Spartan... can't you move your own thread? smh... :p

But now instead of confused, I'm just surprised (not terribly so though) that there is a game about it and moreso that it's apparently good enough to draw in Western gamers. That's pretty neat.

I'll edit the title accordingly. In retrospect, I should have known better.

I believe the game I was thinking of was called "Syrian Warfare" rather than "Syrian War", but perhaps I am mistaken? I don't play such games, but I remember some controversy over it.

Oh, that's the one then. There was some controversy over it.

I finished the Warfare recently and I'm now taking a bit of a break for TOAW IV and writing, before starting Syrian Warfare.

I like the fact that armor vehicles have armor facing and component distribution, it means that tanks have weaker rear side and first penetration will take out engine. Reapairs are unrealistic but fit well into game mechanics, so your vehicle crews can take over and repair any knocked out enemy vehicle that is not completely destroyed, but you can only repair components (engine, gun...) and not the armor, thus in combat you have to position your vehicles carefully, so the side with freshest armour is facing the enemy. You also have to take care of your ammo and fuel supply, unlike the enemies who have unlimited ammo, which gets especially annoying with their artillery and atgm teams .
Units gain experience so it pays off to take good care of them. There is lot of attention to small details, I loved to watch infantry climb over the fences, or look through blasted walls of the building to see them them finish off the last defenders inside and take the defensive positions.
I get the impression though that the developers were making different game at first but changed the story in the middle, then decided to shoehorn all the developed assets in the changed game. They could have made much better story with some changes.
Also there is lot of save and reload especially when you have to do atgm baiting and artillery dodging.
In the end, for me the good parts outweighted the bad parts. I would love to see the final statistic and all the diaries at the end, instead of just main menu after the credits.

Ok moving on to Syrian Warfare, but first couple of screenshots from Warfare

Storming the hilltop village, after fighting through bunkers, armor and artillery support. Wrecked houses, dead bodies, burned out MLRS, SPAAGs and technicals, T-72 is still salvagable. Burned vehicles can be quite problematic obstacles, but they vanish over time. Helmet over Bradley means it caries infantry.

Common urban combat situation, armor vehicles hiding behind buildings, ready to pop from behind the cover, while infantry captures the buildings to provide the overwatch. Bradley near the tower has AMS so I can use it more agressively, to draw the missile fire away from othe APCS, same with Stryker in the middle top.

And the rarely used close up. AMS Bradley is now in the main street, the soldiers are capturing the building next to it, before they can take the final objective. There is a fuel tanker behind the building thaz can be captured if vehicles need fuel. Since you can capture any salvagable vehicle, one of the APCs in the picture is BTR-80 with added slate armor.
