ET did better than him; he stole a single bike and involved only 3 kids in that.
He probably didn’t realize he could quit basic, thought he’d be for sure spending the next four years at least in the army, and then decided on a really dumb plan to try and escape, because he’s an idiot.
He wasn't even at the hardest of the Army Boot Camps. He was at Relaxin Jackson. It ain't like he was at Ft Benning or Ft Knox (Is Fort Knox still open it has been 31 years since a good friend of mine went there) All he had to do was sit down and say I want out. It would take a while but it damn sure beats prison.

it is open, but is for OCS and not Army Basic or AIT. Tankers moved to Benning.
Miles better than being at Benning.
