Just saw the announcement trailer for the next Far Cry game. The trailer has Giancarlo Esposito (of Breaking Bad fame) playing the voice actor/body actor for the dictator Anton Castillo. From Ubisoft's website, you'll be able to play as a female or male character who will be leading the revolution against Castillo.

Not much else in the way of details - expected release date is February 18th, 2021.

I really hope there are some decent Tropico references. I know, different company, but still.

That trailer is amazing, and sent chills up my spine. Really well done.

I hate video game developers being too cowardly to just give us a female main character, so instead they just keep making it "be whatever sex you want in our game!"

I disagree in this case. It's Far Cry, your character is basically an avatar for your own goals and desires. You don't have any character or story beyond "You exist. You got screwed. Now go screw them".

This isn't remotely true. Have you never played Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 4?

A Far Cry games story is basically made by its villain and their relation to the main character. Vaas is by far the most memorable thing from Far Cry 3 because he's the insane psycho that murdered your brother.

In Far Cry 4, Pagan Min is the crazy, charismatic psycho that fucked your Mom.

And those relationships to the antagonist make things more interesting.

Like, damn, in Far Cry 4 I would've joined Pagan Min in a heart beat if possible.

Additionally, I think its cheap, and its something that Ubisoft is indirectly doing a lot - look at Valhalla, Legion, and now Far Cry 6. There isn't an upcoming Ubisoft headliner where you have to play as one gender or the other, and that's intentional.

Extremely relevant...

Is it just me or does she look turned on in that pic?

Honestly Far Cry 5 had the best villian, I mean Father was that damn good!

I honestly lik the choose your character. Makes me make my character an extension of myself.

Except if its following the usual Ubisoft trend, you're just deciding whether you're male or female, not actually making your own character.
It feels like it to me, at least having customization over the outfit is enough (Im a simple man)

Also I am getting Just Cause vibes from this trailer. Can we have a Rico Rodrguez guess star? like it would be totally worth it.

Not going to happen, Square Enix owns Just Cause, why would they loan Ubisoft their IP?

Artn Square Enix and Ubisoft on good terms with each other? Like they let Siege have a Tomb Raider skin. They put FF15 stuff in AC:Origins. They seem to like working together.

"Buying skins off each other" is very different from having the main character of one IP appear in another developers IP.

I didn't get into 4 but your point is certainly valid. I know 3 had an interesting dynamic with Vaas, but I felt that dynamic was with you, the player, and not with the actual character you were playing. Same with Far Cry 5. The only character trait from the player character in 3 is that he's a sort of daredevil who will do stupid and risky stunts...which is how he got on that island (I could be totally misremembering too. It has been a long time). The only thing that might have changed in 3 was with the...female tribal leader thing at the end. Not sure what they would have done with a female player character.

You do realize the plot of Far Cry 3 also has you rescuing your girlfriend?

Am I the only person that plays Far Cry for its plot?????

I haven't really played a far cry since the first and that primal one. Though with
Giancarlo Esposito as the villain im pretty hype for this one tbh.

FC3 was the best for me, because Jason Brody was a character himself and you could track his growth (and/or devolution), alongside his relationships with his NPC allies. The Far Cry games where you can make your own character have to be dropping you in as a blank avatar, and so they lose out on that characterization.

And that was crucial, to me at least. Vaas wasn't just an entertainingly crazy antagonist; he was a legitimate foil for the PC because you were also going violently crazy. Conversely, in FC4, Pagan Min had a relationship with you, and it was well-done, but Ajay was so bland himself and did so little growth as a character that there was nothing to carry the arc.

I have low expectations for this game, because if you can't make the protagonist a character because you need them to be an empty customizable vessel, you can't tell their story.
