Once upon a time this was understood, and it was also understood that the reason you shouldn't assume a stereotype is true, is because a given individual isn't going to necessarily have the same trait as most people within a group that individual is a part of.

For example, Americans own more guns than any other people in the world. That doesn't mean that each American owns a gun though, or even wants to, so one should not assume that a given American is automatically going to know how to use a gun just because they're American.

That doesn't make recognizing that more Americans have used a gun than anyone else in the world somehow bigoted.
