ETC Guns and the Future of Tank Weaponry

There are still ways to improve the ammo. Find ways to propel the round faster. find ways to make the weapon fire faster. Something like that. The biggest defense against armor is CAS and artillery with the way armor is being developed. it is also harder for gun tech to imrpove
Not really. We've already gotten the dart from 20mm diameter to 40mm diameter and to keep the same velocity characteristics with a 60mm diameter dart, you'll need to have a bigger gun anyway...

Small nukes start escalation to big nukes and before you know it, ICBMs are flying en masse.
That is unless UV-Pulse lasers are a thing, then ICBMs (and ballistic missiles in general) are defacto useless unless you want to simply have one nuke to every seven decoys...

Pluto like nuclear ramjet cruise missiles could use terrain masking to avoid ground based laser defenses, while any such orbital facilities cold be disabled with kinetic kill projectiles.

Not really, especially if you add the fun that is 'smart dust' and microsats. Can't carry out a sneak attack if the moment you try its detected...

... so that wouldn't work. Believe me, I've tried in my research into my setting. Basically, if you have a sensor density of 'yes', you can't hide anything which means that space-based L-sats would have a target and eliminate it as it launches.

Of course in that case the enemy will have similar network as well and in matter of minutes the entire Earth orbit will be reduced to ''Clean before proceeding''.

Well, i once read novel about future in which quests at wedding use small nukes to fight each other after they get drunk.

Yes, then radioactive rain helped sober up, walking back home they mutated, growing extra legs and chitinous armour. I remember that one. Nuclear Wedding. ;)

The French defense firm Nexter is known to be conducting trials with a 140mm mounted on a modified LeClerc testbed, while Rheinmetall showed off a 130mm/L51 gun at the Eurosatory arms expo back in 2016 and more recently showed off video footage of that gun mounted on what appears to be a modified Challenger 2.

Yeah, we'll be seeing up gunning more than using ETC guns for the immediate future... that is why Russia has the 152mm in its back pocket, so to speak.

Armor tech has finally caught up with gun tech, because we've incidentally kept gun tech languishing for decades while we kept putting money into protection.
