Early Spaceborne-Fighters in Science Fiction

Can anyone else think of 'earlier' era space based fighter craft or the like? These are the ones that come to mind to me. Any clear favorites? Also could it be reconciled that these fighter craft could actually be complimentary to each other with some doing some jobs better then others?

The United States Marine Corps SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jet ("Hammerhead") (Space: Above and Beyond): Evolving from modular jet designs of the late 20th century, the SA-43 Hammerhead SCRAM engines are capable of flight operations both in the vacuum of space as well as in planetary atmospheres and transit between the two. It has a long range LIDAR (Laser Infrared Detection and Ranging, Long Range) system that can track upwards of 400 independent targets. It is equipped with an advanced HUD for the pilot and its primary weapons are a nose railgun mounted on a gimble that can engage targets on a fifty degree axis. It also possesses a rear railgun capable of automatic targeting as well as six hardpoints for bombs, space to space missiles and special equipment pods.

The USAF F-302 Fighter/Interceptor (Stargate): Based on reverse engineered Goa'uld technology but completely Human-engineered and constructed. The F-302 has four different engines, air breathing jets, rocket boosters and a hyperspace window generator. Capable of hypersonic speed at 30 kilometers in atmosphere, the inertial dampeners built in allow it the maneuverability of a modern jet aircraft and the comfort of riding a 747. Equipped with dual forward facing railguns and modified AIM-120a air to air missiles enhanced with naquadria warheads. They also have a payload bay located in the belly of the craft and a radar like sensor system with a 600 kilometer detection radius.

The Firestorm (X-Com): Based wholly on reverse engineered and adopted alien technology, the Firestorm is fueled by an Elerium-115 core fueled power source and highly advanced flight/navigation computers also taken from captured alien UFO's. It is capable of incredible speeds of and equipped with a prototypical gravity wave based drive. It's alien alloy based armor makes it highly resistant to damage, including from plasma and other advanced explosives. Higher tier weapons include a rapid firing plasma cannon which possesses a firepower far surpassing that of contemporary air to air missiles and a fusion lance launcher.

The H-8 Global Defender (Independence Day): The Earth Space Defense Force Global Defender is also based off of alien technology. It's powered by twin hybrid anti-gravity fusion drives that gives it rapid acceleration in space and capable of fast atmospheric flight. Unfortunately attempts at integrating shield technology proved too much of a drain on its power supply. However the H-8 is capable of destroyed enemy shielded vessels with its twin wing mounted blaster cannons.

The Bubble-Fighter from the Lost in Space movie is actually quite a sensible design.
It keeps the Pilot close to the centre of gravity and provides excellent all around vision.

The SA-23E Mitchell-Hyundyne Starfury It was built as a response to an Alien fighter the Earth Alliance encountered in war with an alien species bent on the conquest and genocide of other species.

EDIT: The Star Fury is easily my favorite space superiority fighter or all time. At least before you get to the point of ignoring physics.

Oh yeah... and that reminds me of those Raider Fighters that showed up in the first episode of Babylon 5 that were implied to be several generations prior to the Starfury.

The Delta-V Zephyr 109 Light Fighter (Babylon 5): Capable of atmospheric and space flight, this delta winged light fighter is piloted by one individual and equipped with a pair of pulse cannons as weaponry and can be equipped with six hardpoints for extra ordnance. It possesses condensed armor plating and is powered by a fusion reactor. Due to their atmospheric capability, the fighters air foils are a vulnerable point. However the fighter is cheap and its ruggedness and availability has allowed the seemingly obsolete spacraft spread across the galaxy, filling up the fleets of lesser militaries, outlaws, pirates and other groups. One variant is also equipped with an aft mounted pulse cannon.

While its not theoretically a low tech or early fighter, practically besides the special move the Gunstar from the last starfighter is fairly grounded in actual design.

Edit: putting weapons in turrets, epsecially light ones, makes sense for space weapondry, especially with the near 360 coverage the placement of the turrets has with the two in the back. Its not absurdly small like the raptor is, and it has enough internal volume so it could plausibly hold a reasonable amount of fuel!

Colonial Viper Mark I (Battlestar: Galactica): Battlestar: Galactica is seen as a remake show that while a space based series, tried to have as many elements as possible ripped from the modern day. As such even their early model star fighter fits the theme of an early style space fighter. It's considered a venerable and rugged design, with a simple narrow shape, cockpit and stubby wings with hardpoints. It's primary weapon system is a pair of kinetic based cannons but its also capable of firing missiles or bombs from its wing hard points. It was still a capable space superiority fighter even forty years later against the Cylons thanks to the lack of extensive software and computer systems seen on later Viper models.

Here's the source of the picture, complete with a larger version in which the text is more legible.
