Naw goblins are colony living spiders. The males are smaller and weaker than the females and really unfortunate surface dwellers are cocooned and have an egg sack planted on them.

Then wasp-elves would hunt them to laid their eggs in them.Poor goblins.
 
Way to spin the beard is to take a page from the Dwarves in the Artemis Fowl series. Specifically, the beard is less hair and more Antenna, which can be sort of moved around and used to sense vibrations and the like. In the book series you can even pull one out, hold the ripped out part, and it will expand and harden when the tip is released, which can be used in lockpicking as a result since it'll form into the shape of a key as needed.
