Do you create non-human characters in games?

I'll pretty much always go for a monster race if it's available. Assuming only standard races are I'll go depending on the concept.

The short answer to why is, I've been gaming for close to 30 years now and there's only so many variants on human fighter 1 you can actually come up with. I'll make exotic builds because I've already done all the standard ones.

I also have a somewhat odd mix of gamer archetypes, going by tests and proclivities I'm about half and half loony and munchkin which would appear not to play well with each other. I generally make really weird, generally suboptimal, builds and then try to get as much mileage out of them as I possibly can.

Other races?

Only if the race is dragon. Or unless you count mages as not entirely human. I always play caster where possible.

Though in my many replays of Neverwinter Nights 2 I've often used Kaedrin's expansion to play as a half fiend/celestial, just to see how absurdly powerful I can make my character.

When playing DnD I almost always play an elven ranger. They fight like I'm naturally inclined towards: from a safe distance.

I did once roll up and play a Pixie Barbarian named Lemon armed with a Pixie-sized battleaxe for shits-and-giggles.

2'6" and 35lbs dressed like a circus clown who has to fly just to look you in the eye was entertaining for everyone.

All the RPG games I've played in the past only had human characters, but I haven't played the genre for years and it was a coincidence than a conscious choice, really (e.g. KotOR 1, 2, Guild Wars 1, Diablos 1, 2, and 3, et cetera).

The exception was WoW, back in... shit, must have been one of the early expansions. I played a Forsaken and a Night Elf.

It depends a lot on the game and what I'm trying to accomplish with the particular run. If I'm neither doing a pure RP run nor focusing on gameplay effectiveness, but rather simply exploring/adventuring and enjoying the game world (e.g. a first playthrough or nostalgic replay years later), then I'll usually go for whatever option most closely represents the real me (In Elder Scrolls, for instance, this typically means going Nord for culture and appearance, or Breton for height and abilities).

If I'm doing a particular RP build, however, I'm much more likely to play non-human if one is available and fits the RP build (Again using Elder Scrolls as the example, I often end up playing Dark Elf or Imperial for RP builds).

And if I'm going chiefly for gameplay effectiveness then I'll just play whatever best fits my playstyle, regardless of "race", or if multiple choices qualify then I'll likely go for whatever best represents the real me.

Sometimes I play as non-human.
An male orc or dwarve for that brute strength and toughness, or a svelte, petite, dainty female elf to indulge my Inner Tanya Degurechaff

I lke dwarves for some reason. Probably the beards.

Beards are for barbarians, Enlightened civilized men are clean shaven.
