Flora-Bama Lounge and Package

"Such a fine establishment" A huge figure sitting at one of the bars thought as he gulped down the last of his drink and shifted, the bar stool gave a slight whine under his weight.

"But sadly, still not tailor made with someone like me in mind." He raised his massive hand to flag down one of the bartenders, who gave not the slightest bit of trepidation at his customers otherworldly appearance.

"Can I do anything for you today Sir?" the bartender asked politely, but with a air of quickness that said he was packed to the gills in work.

The Alien figure gave a slight smirk. "I need a extra shot if you would."

The bartender nodded, "One moment please" before walking off to collect the shot.

The figure looked around at the revelers that packed the bar, drinking, flirting and just having a "good ole time" as he had once heard a old man put it at another bar he had visited in this particular state.

"Hopefully I will get a award for originality with this transplant at least, after all, this is one of the more least talked about types of transplants amongst this particular type." He thought, as he hoped that this would get him into a more higher social circle amongst his mischief making race...

"Your shot, Sir." the bartender announced as he emerged from the crowd and handed the Alien figure his drink before saying "You have a Happy New Year."

"The same" The alien figure muttered as the bartender left and he downed his final shot, before snapping his fingers, In a instant a roll of hundreds would appear in the cash register and his overworked bartender would soon find a expensive Five Dollar Half Eagle in his wallet...

He turned and walked through the crowd out into the outdoor portion of the lounge, people parting before him like water and yet not acknowledging his presence. People where drinking and looking to the sky and at the countdown clock, which now read Eleven, Fifty-Five. Waiting for the countdown, the fireworks, kissing and over the top drinking that would undoubtedly follow.
317108_10150364190967349_1920974967_n.jpg

His purple wings unfurled and he leapt, flapping his wings before landing on top of the building and giving a glance to his surroundings. Other than the beach to his back there where apartments and beach houses in all directions. He then gave a glance to the building beneath his feet, that was half in Florida and half in Alabama...

"I guess I could make one small exception, they do have nice shots after all and it would be nice to stop in for a drink sometime." He thought, as he pulled out a cigar and lit up, as he could hear the voices of the people below beginning their countdown loudly.

"60!!!"

The Alien gave a stretch and yawn the night was still young after all...

"50!!!"

The Crowds voice echoed louder and louder in jubilation for the coming year...

"40!!!"

The Alien smirked at the irony, "Oh yes, they will have a year to be remembered indeed."

"30!!!"

"I wonder how many will simply think that they have drunk too much in the morning?"

"20!!!"

He puffed out a ring of smoke...

"10!!!"

He stretched again and popped his knuckles...

"6!!!"

He stood to his full height...

"3!!!'

He slowly extended his hand outward....

"1!!!"

He snapped his fingers...

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"

Their was no noise, rumble or any other immediate signs that anything had happened, other than all the buildings, roads or anything built by human hands on the Florida side of the bar vanished in a instant...

Fireworks opened up as he could hear the new year revelers cheering, blissfully ignorant to what had just changed their world forever.

"Just how it should be" he though, as his wings again unfolded and he took flight into the night sky laughing manically.

Dixie's Heart Can Stop The Mind

Chapter One

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 1st, 2020?

11: 24 AM?

Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan?

tree-nature-forest-branch-light-cloud-sky-night-sunlight-morning-dawn-atmosphere-dusk-evening-darkness-moon-full-moon-moonlight-at-night-midnight-astronomical-object-atmospheric-phenomenon-shadow-natural-1148786.jpg

"What the f*ck is going on?" Jack Thomas thought as he heard the muffled sound of gunfire and screams echo off in the distance.

One minute he was filing a paper that command had requested, dressed only in standard BDU's and the next he was completely decked out in his combat gear, rifle and all, underneath the night sky the moon barely visible in the morning through the oak trees that he was apparently sitting propped up against...

...Tree's that most certainly weren't to be found in the sandbox mountains of Afghanistan...

"This has to be some sort of nightmare, I am dreaming up, but still I have been sitting here for an hour and their isn't feeling less real." He thought as he sat in the darkness, rifle in hand, unwilling to move or pull out his phone and possibly give away his position.

"Is anybody out there!?' an anxious voice called out in English from the darkness, It sounded less than thirty feet away...

"Should I answer?" Jack thought as he looked around barely able to make out anything in the almost moonless darkness, all his training told him 'no' never give away your position to a possible enemy in an unknown situation...and yet...

"I need intel on this situation though..." His mind thought for a moment as he readied his rifle as quietly as he could before he made up his mind and turned and yelled.

"THIS IS LANCE CORPORAL, JACK THOMAS, USMC! IDENTIFY YOURSELF AND DO NOT MOVE! IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY, I WILL REGISTER YOU AS A HOSTILE!!!!

The shaken response came almost immediately, THIS IS SEAMAN RECRUIT, SAMUEL OWENS OF THE USS GERALD FORD! U.S. NAVY! DONT SHOOT! I REPEAT DON'T SHOOT!!! I AM UNARMED!!!

"The hell?" Jack thought before yelling back, "AND WHAT'S A AIRCRAFT CARRIER SEAMAN DOING OUT HERE?!!"

"WHERE THE HELL EVEN IS HERE MAN?!" The seaman's young voice yelled back.

Jack felt his heart dipping at that response before yelling back the only thing he could. "CAMP LEATHERNECK, AFGHANISTAN!!!..."

The Seamans's voice fell into silence for a moment before responding back "THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT! WHEN I FELL ASLEEP IN MY BUNK WE WERE OFF HAWAII ON A TRAINING EXCERCISE, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE PULLING MY LEG?!!!"

"I AM AFRAID NOT SEAMAN, THIS IS NO TIME TO BULLSH*T!!! ONE MINUTE I AM IN THE SANDBOX IN BROAD DAYLIGHT AND THE NEXT I AM HERE AND I DONT KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED!!!"

"THE SAME! I DONT KNOW HOW I GOT HERE EITHER, I WAS IN MY BUNK AND WAS THAT YOU SHOOTING EARLIER?!! Samuel responded back in a distraught voice.

"NO!" Jack responded quickly " STAY WHERE YOU ARE AND KEEP QUITE!!! WHO KNOWS WHO ELSE IS WALKING AROUND HERE ARMED AND MIGHT NOT ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE FIR-

Jack stopped talking as he heard noise in the distance unrelated to gunshot's which sounded like talking although he couldn't make it out.

SIR?!! The Seaman's voice asked.

QUIET SEAMAN!!! Jack yelled. "DON'T YOU HEAR THAT?..."

Both men's talked died as the noise became more and more understandable as well as closer until they could make out the words.

"N*W HE*R *HI*!!! N*^ HE*R T%IS!!! *LL *.S. F*OR*ES IN T_E A_EA *AY DO-N Y*UR A*MS!!! BY *RDER *F SE*GE-NT M_JOR -F THE U.*. AR-Y, Z-K C_R**!!!" _ut-oriz*tion _od* 37.!!!A loud booming voice echoed in the distance.

Jack jerked his head homing in the direction of the noise, and saw a pair of headlights emerge through the trees coming down a loose dirt road that he hadn't been able to spot before in the dark, less than thirty feet from him. The Humvee had PA speakers mounted on the roof and was followed by a column of what appeared to be U.S. soldiers, trudging their way down the gravel road as the PA speakers on the Humvee continued to blare and repeat...

"NOW HEAR THIS!!! NOW HEAR THIS!!! ALL U.S. FORCES IN THE AREA LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS, BY ORDER OF SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE U.S. ARMY, ZAK CAREY Authorization Code 37!!!

Jack finally able to see and visually confirm the soldiers as the U.S. military and he remembered this authorization code, immediately complied laying down his rifle and walking out in front of the creeping Humvee with his hands in the air and turning and yelling. "SAMUEL COME OUT!!!"

He heard movement to his left and saw an young African American man who appeared about eighteen years old, step out into the headlight's, well dressed in a navy seaman's uniform.

The Humvee stopped and two men in full combat fatigues emerged leading a small squad from behind, their rifles leveled at them. Jack gave his best smile while Samuel eyed the rifles nervously.

"Yep, he's definitely a ship squid, probably only seen and used a rifle briefly in basic." Jack thought. before looked at one of the two armed men and said.

"Am I under arrest dogface?"

Samuels's eyes looked like they were going to pop out of his skull at that statement, the two armed men took it in stride as one looked at the other and said. "Yep,' he's a Jarhead alright." and somewhat relaxed his posture, although his weapon remained trained on them and he turned to the squad of men behind him.

"Search them."

Two of the army personnel rushed forward and began frisking down the two of them to Jack's annoyance and then they stopped and said. "They are clean sir."

"Good." The head of the squad spoke and asked. "Please hand over any I.D. Just the basic's so we can verify your identity we can deal with the full paperwork later." The other of the two men said.

"USMC. Lance Corporal. Jack Thomas. I was deployed with a small unit in helping train the Afghan Army at Camp Leatherneck." Jack replied handing over his wallet containing his I.D.

U.S. Navy. Seaman Recruit, Samuel Owen's with the Gerald Ford." Samuel stated who also pulled out his card.

The two men exchanged looks at Jack and Samuel's information and the squad behind them shifted in unease, although Jack himself wasn't sure why .

"What's the SITREP?" Jack asked as he looked at the two men who seemed to be a Private and Private First Class respectively.

"Unknown, but definitely FUBAR on a guess." The first class responded before asking, "Did either of you have any weapons?

Jack pointed at his rifle and pistol lying against the tree, "Just my 1911 and M4."

"I was unarmed." Samuel stated.

The First Class looked at him and gestured to the procession "Both of you, fall in line, who knows how many more stragglers are out here." He turned to the Private, "Retrieve the Lance Corporals weapon's."

Jack paid no mind though, as he walked towards the rear as ordered with the much smaller Samuel trailing in his massive six and a half foot tall wake.

Once they got to the rear they could see at least, a hundred men (and some women) of various branches all standing stripped of their weapon's with the exception of a single man lying in the back of a Humvee guarding a mountain of weapons.

Another man was screaming in pain as a single medic looked over him.

What's going on?! Jack asked one of the other Marines who walked up. A Private, with the name 'Wilk's' on his uniform

"Don't know." he replied, "That guy was shot in accidental friendly fire and nearest we can tell, one minute most of these people were in some other part of the world on duty, and the next they were here..."

And where is here, exactly? Jack asked gesturing to the cold wood that surrounded them.

"Alabama apparently." Wilk's stated. "As far as we can tell from the reports and radio messages flying back in forth between those who are lucky enough to have them at least."

"Who's in charge then?" Jack asked feeling unnerved.

"From what I know and heard, one of the Army higher-ups was lucky enough to be driving in that Humvee with a grunt or two that also where brought along for the ride when things went FUBAR, and used it to take up the chain of command.

"Well that's lucky it's my state, at least I am still in Kansas." Jack murmured to himself slightly thankful, apparently the other Marine caught it because he replied lazily.

"All of us seem to be lucky in that regard..."

This chapter was heck to write, and I promise the next chapter will be a lot more interesting than this...

A few things I will mention about this chapter are.

  1. I am by no means a military expert in rank's or how protocol is handled, so if our more military minded member's like Zachowon feel like something isn't right, feel free to tell me.
  2. To make it clea, this chapter shows that all service member's assigned to Non-Alabama based or assigned limit's unit's are ISOT'ed along with their individual equipment with Alabama.
  3. Sergeant Major Zak Carey the man who assumed control in this chapter, is fictional but he's a exact copy the guy from this 1984 film Tank staring James Garner the trailer is bellow I would highly recommend it.

Looking forward to this!
Thanks! I am glad you enjoy it and hope every one else does as well! The next chapter will be up very soon.

In any case, my intention with this was to ISOT a state that wasn't too OP and yet interesting, In the case of Alabama it's Southern state, the most Conservative state in the Union today, and despite this it is still going to be wildly liberal by most standard's in the 1860's creating interesting conflict's when coupled with it's past in the ACW.

In short, I plan on taking every advantage I can with this TL.

I don't know how this is relevant, but you have a good taste in movies.
I know. LOL

Anyway it's relevant because I was showing who the Easter egg was.
"NOW HEAR THIS!!! NOW HEAR THIS!!! ALL U.S. FORCES IN THE AREA LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS!!! BY ORDER OF SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE U.S. ARMY, ZAK CAREY!!!" A loud booming voice echoed in the distance.
Sergeant Major Zak Carey the man who assumed control in this chapter, is fictional but he's a exact copy the guy from this 1984 film Tank staring James Garner the trailer is bellow I would highly recommend it.
In any case I was planning on making him important latter, although it's important to know that as a he would only be the same in looks and personality, as I just love this character and their aren't many known people from Alabama who are known in the army.

Wilson Hydroelectric Dam, control room.

Sam Gamble rubbed his eyes as he again dialed, he had been trying to call the Chattanooga TVA office to determine what had caused the immense drain on the grid that had just happened in the last half hour and had currently left Florence without power, despite the 653 megawatts the dam was still producing...

"Any luck?' his subordinate Josh asked as he looked over the gauges...

Sam huffed, as he took a sip of midnight oil. "No, I haven't received any responses from Chattanooga by way of cellphone or landline and to top it all off, even personal friends aren't answering up there. We have also received calls from both Guntersville and Wheeler about similar issues, although Guntersville also happened to mention that they couldn't get into contact with Nickajack either..."

"Same as with Pickwick?" Josh asked the question, looming darkly over the both of them...

Sam nodded as he again dialed his cellphone and again.-"We are sorry all circuits are busy" - Before he promptly closed it in annoyance...

"What about Browns Ferry?" Josh continued, referring to the second largest nuclear plant in the U.S.

Sam, rolled his eyes. "Nothing different than us to report...according to Guntersville anyway... "

"Felicia's the chatterbox as usual ain't she?' Josh asked as he took another sip of his own coffee, before turning back to his computer his eyes turning widening at the readings he was rapidly starting to see.

"Yep," Sam responded plainly not paying attention in the slightest as his radio buzzed.

"SAM!!"! WE HAVE GOT A PROBLEM LOOK OUTSIDE AT THE RIVER, TOWARDS FLORENCE!!" The voice of Phil Bennet one of the dams most senior operators called out.

Sam shot to his feet and looked outside the control room window at the base of the dam and his heart stopped, at the sight of the entire d*mn river churning rapidly and emptying towards Florence.

He wheeled around at the still unknowing Phil who was still trying to understand his readings and roared. "SLOW OR STOP THOSE D*MN FLOODGATES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND EVACUATE THE ROAD AND DAM, NOW!!!"

He ran to his desk even as the emergency sirens for the dam roared to life and dialed the emergency line for Florence he had always prayed he would never have to use...

"HOLY HELL!!! How have we not heard about this until now!!! If the water is receding downriver at that rate, and we haven't been able to call them, it can only mean one thing coupled with the system drain" Sam thought in a growing panic as the dial tone slowly ringed...

"Pickwick is gone..."

Bridgeport, Alabama.
00_-_Cover_River_in_blue_by_Dennis_Lambert_for_web_site.jpg

"It's a beautiful night.." seventy-six-year-old Margret Holcomb thought, as she looked out at the Tennessee river valley in the dim moonlight, from her home that alongside many overlooked the valley from atop the Battery hill.

The Bridgeport community was a strange one that had boomed and gone bust, several times over the years, and sadly now it was bust, albeit with signs of a possible boom on the horizon with the arrival of Google building their servers at the former Widows Creek Coal power plant site. Like many smaller communities across the U.S. however, the town however despite its hard times had done it's best to maintain what it could, especially the nearby Kilpatrick row, (A series of Queen Ann Style Victorian Homes built by once Mayor and wealthy Wallstreet investor Frank Kilpatrick) as well as the train depot like most bypassed small southern towns did, in reference to the glory days where they had once had importance.
cfiles21890.jpg

None of this mattered to Margret however, as she looked off into the distance at the Shelby Rhinehart Bridge that spanned the Tennessee River at South Pittsburg Tennessee and the few bass fishing boats she could make out with their blinking lights dotting the river despite the cold.

No, all that she could think about was the empty spot in the swing beside her that would normally seat her husband Robert. It was a tradition every year since they had been married forty years ago, to go out and greet the 'New air of a new year.' as Robert had always called it, sadly he had passed of cancer last year and she was still at a loss of what to do, she had loved him for over fifty years, ever since he had swept her off her feet and from that terrible work she had in the cotton fields up to that point, making her the happiest person in the world, and now he was gone...

"I will be with him and the good Lord soon, right after I give what I can in knowledge to my family," Margret thought, as her thoughts went to her children and grandchildren a slight smile forming on her face as she looked back up at the river and blinked...

"Did the bridges light's go out?" She thought, as she looked around up the river, unable to see any lights in that direction, before her hearing picked up a strange quiet noise that seemed to be getting louder and louder into a roar...

"Wha?-" she thought, as she adjusted her glasses and squinted looking for the source of the noise in the dim moonlit darkness, and then she saw 'it'...

The river was sliding away and reversing back upstream at a pace that shouldn't have been possible, the water turning into a torrent and pulling more and more with it...

"The boats!" she thought, as she turned to where she had seen a few a minute prior. She could make out one unknowing boat that was sitting dead in the water, it's lights on, unaware of the incoming danger, and a second set of boat lights racing into the shore seemingly to beach themselves into the bank to her happiness...

...The first however had noticed too late, and to her horror was swallowed by the rushing torrent of water...

The terrified elderly woman gasped in horror and turned running back into the house to get her phone in a panic at the horrible thing she had just witnessed...

Good story, but why take soldiers weapons? If there were any enemies, they would just kill sergeant and take all rifles for themselves.

They were lucky, that they never meet any bandits.
Good point on them possibly being enemies I admit that I should have given them a slightly better reason to disarm even though these are unordinary circumstances.

As for why the weapons are being taken away? It's due to Friendly Fire, because having armed men be abducted and thrown into dark woods together makes people jumpy and prone to shooting whatever moves. Another reason is that the man who assumes command is worried that some of these soldier's might not be who they claim to be and want's to verify all these people are in fact U.S. military before giving them weapon's which they could use without warning.

And while I didn't verify it in the chapter not everyone in the convoy has been disarmed just roughly half, by this point they know they are in Alabama, so they aren't afraid of getting ambushed or anything like that.

Montgomery Alabama.

Alabama Capital Building, Old Senate Chamber.

State-Capitol-Original-House-Chamber-Montgomery-AL-2013-12-09.jpg

James held his hand to his forehead as he arrived, and looked around the chaotic and tangled mess of an emergency meeting that the governor apparently had cobbled together an hour earlier, to preside over what he personally knew, had to be the biggest disaster in the history of the state.

The flood of people so great that they had to move the meeting to the Old Senate Chamber that hadn't been used for 'years' as anything other a museum, rather than the governor's own office's downstairs....

"...So let me get straight..." Doug Jones the Junior Democratic Senator asked as James entered the first to speak, a worried look on his face along with every other person in the room. "all communications with Washington are gone, several power plants are having crises involving a possible dam breakage, water loss, and another unexplained phenomenon, and to top that off we still event found out what I and Richard went through!!!"

"Yes," Governor Kay Ivey replied sitting in the speaker podium looking over the various people. "I have confirmed it through the Adjutant General when I informed her to mobilize the National Guard, she says that satellite communications are down, and the Pentagon isn't responding to any of their calls, to further compound this issue, Mr. Benson's news about a possible breakage at both Pickwick has startling implications..."

"Are you saying we are possibly at war?" Gregg Canfield the Head of the Department of Commerce spoke in a voice that sounded surreal as people around him broke out into murmurings.

Ivey raised her hand to silence the noise. "Major General Gordon says it's 'possible' that it could indeed be the first strike by foreign actors, she has advised me, along with Warrant Officer Allen, to use this time to mobilize what little we can to get things under control, because if this 'is' the first strike, we are beyond lucky to have avoided it." The Governor replied.

"It's not the only issue" John Cooper the head of the Department of Transportation spoke up. "Though most of the phone lines are down, I have had one or two people get through and inform me that there has been major road damage's, for some reason numerous roads have from what I have been told have vanished. In one case, I have received a report from an officer in Athens that state highway I-65 has disappeared completely along with any other roads that crossed the border in that area ."

Richard Shelby who was still as pale as a corpse from his earlier experience glanced at Cooper with trepidation. "Is your source reliable?" He asked wearily.

Cooper rolled his eyes. "He is a personal friend, and has always been reliable before, and considering the means by why which both you and Senator Jones has returned to us, it's not unlikely."

"Gentlemen!..." Governor Ivey butted in as she finally noticed James himself, the former elderly power worker smiled back and gave a friendly wave. "And you are Sir?..." she asked.

"James Travis." The man in question stated before continuing in his grave voice flashing an old TVA badge. "Former Senior Plant Operator at Wilson Dam, my former protégé, Mr. Samuel Gamble has requested me to get down here and give you a briefing on the situation at the river since he couldn't get through to the TVA and the lines to you were tied up..."

"You must have been fast," Cooper stated his eyes narrowing. "Wilson dam is at least a three-hour drive from here and yet you are here in less than one..."

"I live in Montgomery." James stated in annoyance at the secretary's insinuation. "I moved here to be closer to my nephew after I retired, Sam called me through my HAM radio..."

Cooper looked about ready to say something before he mumbled just huffed and drawled off. "I apologize, I am just wound up with all of this, that's all."

"Nothing to apologize over," James answered, wishing he could light a cigarette or be anywhere but here as he continued on.

"To answer your question, Wilson is fine, although Pickwick most definitely isn't, and neither is the vast portion of Tennessee downstream for that matter, already the water level at Florence is estimated to have dropped fifteen feet. The damage itself is minimal besides boathouse's and of course the boat's that have been ripped away from their mooring's between Pickwick and Wilson, to say nothing of any barges that may have been on the river."

"So, the dam is stable?" Governor Ivey asked her voice sounding hopeful.

James nodded. "As stable as a dam can get considering the circumstances, from the calls they were getting Wheeler is also stable, which means more importantly that Wheeler Lake and Brown's Ferry Nuclear Plant is also stable for now.

"What about Plant Farley?" A woman who Travis didn't recognize called out from the back of the crowd.

James rolled his eyes. "I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?" a man requests out in the rear of the those assembled.

"I mean, I don't know!" James snapped losing patience. "Plant Farley is under the control of Alabama Power, not the TVA. I would suggest you call them if you have any questions concerning Farley, in the meantime I will change the topic and continue by saying Guntersville is in an extremely bizarre situation."

"How Bizarre? I haven't heard of anything from Huntsville" Ivey stated. "The lines in the area are tied.

"Nothing but the same thing that happened with us," James stated. "Despite all logic saying it shouldn't be possible, the river has reversed course and is flooding back upriver into Tennessee..."

Everyone in the room blinked and fell silent at the man's words.

...Mr. Travis... Kay Ivey asked slowly. "You obviously have credentials, otherwise security or my secretary wouldn't have allowed you into the building much less this room...How could that even be possible?

James' eyes deepened as he looked around the room as he thought. "And to think I thought I was home free from ever having to manage a disaster even one of a hundredth of this size back when I retired."

"Governor Ivey." James finally stated as he looked at the Governor. "I worked for the TVA for over 45 years, and when I retired I had the most experience out of any plant operator in the system, believe me, I don't know 'How it happened' only 'Why it has'. The only way that the Tennessee River could have reversed flow into Tennessee from Guntersville would have been a massive loss of water in Tennessee somewhere."

"Any theories?" Doug Jones asked looking at the man intently."

"None that literally hold that much water, unless a giant hole opened up in the earth and swallowed a good portion of the River in Tennessee, it shouldn't be possible" James replied.

"I see." Governor Ivey responded slowly. "What about power? Can it be restored quickly?"

"In theory," James responded, the basic's flying through his mind. "The reason we are down in power isn't that we aren't producing energy, it's because we have lost contact with the power grid which distributes it. In short, we would need to re-establish the connection into Tennessee or jury rig ourselves a makeshift one, in the case of the later it could take from two to three months, if not longer of around the clockwork."

Ivey tapped her pen against the paper she was writing on before starting. "We can't go that long without heat in this weather, if we do, people will die..."

"Don't shoot the messenger Ma'am," James replied. "I am only telling you what I was told and making assumptions based on what my many years on the job tell me."

"I don't intend to." The governor stated. "...Mr. Travis, thank you for giving us this information, would you mind giving my secretary your contact and residential information when you leave? I might need someone with your knowledge to help advise me on the facts of the matter as they come in over the next few days.

"Of course," James stated as he nodded his head briefly and took his leave at the dismissal, he might have been retired from the TVA, but he wasn't from civic responsibility...

AN: Well this took awhile to get out, thankfully it is now, this chapter is full of research into the governing people of Alabama and their relation's with their offices.

This chapter took place in a unique location that has some interesting irony to it, the Alabama Old Senate Chamber was ironically where the Confederacy was declared in 1861 as the Confederate Flag on the right side of the speaker's chair symbolizes as does the plaque behind the speaker's chair's.

You may be wondering why it's called the 'old senate chamber, well their is a interesting bit of history behind that. The fact is, that over the years the Alabama House and Senate have outgrown them, but moving them wasn't simple because the Alabama constitution prohibits the capitol from meeting anywhere but in that building based on a bunch of capitol jumping in the states youth.

So when they finally decided to move in the late 90's they hit a snag because of it, to get around it they used a proviso which stated the senate/house could be moved elsewhere provided renovations were being done to the capitol and 'officially' for the past twenty-five years the Old Senate Chamber despite clearly done with renovation's is still technically undergoing them.

A few real life people of note that appear or are mentioned in this chapter, in the order they appear are...

Would they still have short wave radio or some other non satellite form of communication?

Not to mention they could send out helicopters and small aircraft to see what’s around them.
They do, but keep in mind it's dark out and it's only an hour after the start of the 'incident', the situation on the Tennessee River is taking the lions-share of everybody's attention and the land lines being tied up and a blackout is compounding the issue.

Civilians have access to primarily CB radio's which range at fifteen mile's unless they are Skywaving. which wouldn't work for them as it's unreliable and transport's signal's way to far.

Police and Emergency personnel radio's have a maximum range of 20-25 miles, so it isn't that far either

The Military has access to an assortment of shortwave radio's, primarily SINCGARS, but those have little better maximum range than police scanners at again 25 miles, and even then they are presently getting their sh*t together and have a majority of their bases in the center of the state.

The ones with the farthest know radio reach are HAM's as their maximum effective range for baseline is 30 miles typically but with the right setup (And man will it cost you.) the range can be extended to over a hundred and with various tricks added it can be extended further, I know a person here in the states who talked to someone in Sweden once.

As for aircraft the only helicopter's in the state are mostly privately owned, either by news organizations, medical helicopters and a few military ones that belong to out of state unit's that were stranded at air base's thanks to the ISOT, beyond that only a few privately owned ones and most of them are heading to the Tennessee River to get a scoop or help recue individual's, it doesn't need to be stated that when they try to investigate the flood zones into Mississippi and Tennessee in a few they will be in for a shock...

Just found out about this story and am definitely enjoying it, considering I just moved to Alabama. Also, since Alabama has the Redstone Arsenal, the space race was just won about 100 years early.
Same I'm really enjoying it so far. Though as I don't really know too much in detail about Alabama's history I can't really say much on that topic.

But @Fallout-Man101 I can't wait for the next update

Thanks to Fort Rucker and Maxwell Air Force Base, there will be a number of aircraft, both fixed wing and rotor wing, available for ops. Granted most of the units stationed are training only, but there should be more than few thousand soldiers between the regular army and National Guard that can secure the border against the inevitable shit storm coming their way.
