You get reports of a small Black Steel incursion in the Arvum system, a pair of corvettes escorting an ancient Aegis-class cruiser. The actually jumped in very far outside of the KF limit, over a week out at normal thrust, and made no move to close in, rather sitting there, a bit ominously, for a week before jumping out before any reaction force could have reached them. That is, if one had been sent, as the system defense commander decided to keep his cards held tight to his chest.

Once the Black Steel forces depart, the admiral sends out several naval patrol wings to sweep the area and discovers a number of very stealthy missiles coasting in on a course that would intercept the planet in a year or two, tipped with massive nuclear warheads. A pattern is quickly determined, discovering a full spread of 20 such missiles. EOD teams are sent out, who disarm the warheads and render the missiles themselves safe. The means used to ‘stealth’ the missiles was simple in application but quite clever in concept, graphene sheets were loosely tied around the missiles, breaking up their outline and lowering their albedo so much that they might easily have slipped past any long range sensors.

Now that you know about the threat it is a relatively simple thing to recalibrate the long range sensors to detect these things, giving you an advantage if the Black Steel relies on this method in the future.

While you attend the commissioning of one of the Dido-class cruisers being built in New Port Royal, Admiral Fisher pulls you aside for a meeting in the wardroom.

“OK, the Army is being stubborn and refusing to admit that there’s a problem, but there is one. When we developed the Trenton class as a convertible dropship, able to be easily configured either for a regiment of mechs or a regiment of tanks, we were quite happy with the result, since it could carry either easily. However there’s a problem with the tank version.” He grimaces. “Bradley refuses to accept that it’s a problem, saying that the tactical deployment plan already takes it into account and that it isn’t, in fact, a real issue. I disagree. I may not be a ground pounder, but it taking almost three times longer to load or offload a vehicle configured Trenton than a mech configured one is, in my book, a problem. This increases the window of vulnerability, prevents us from using those craft for ongoing logistics, and in general is very annoying to my crews. I will admit that the Army doesn’t want this, but I went ahead and had our design people work out an optimized vehicle transport. The big thing is that it had to be an aerodyne, a spheroid is simply too tall to efficiently deploy conventional vehicles.”

The conclusion of the Olympics is as exciting as you had hoped, and you truly enjoyed your time on New Port Royal. In the end Team Griffon walked away with 25 gold medals this year, another dominating performance by your athletes.

The DoME teams engaged in the planetary optimization work on Neuthuringen got just slightly carried away. Just a wee, little, itty bitty, teeny weeny, bit carried away. They did manage to complete their work on time and on budget, but evidently they got bored during their breaks and lunches, and bored DoME teams are unpredictable at the best of times, downright dangerous at the worst. This was one of the better examples of DoME shenanigans, thankfully. Not only did they complete their assigned tasks, they also managed to, completely on their own time and at no cost to the crown, improve the planetary environmental conditions enough to be considered a step in the terraforming process as well.

The new naval construction is online, the increasing number of true capital ships a great relief as the Grand Fleet grows stronger. The new Battle-class destroyers are particularly welcomed into the fleet and have already gotten a reputation as superb little warships.

As part of the closing ceremonies the new Light Mech Division puts on a show that is truly dazzling. You did not know that mechs could do acrobatic routines, including synchronized cartwheels, and one entire company of the new machines managed to wow the crowd by walking on their hands to the hoots and hollers of all present. Let's not go over the armies head right now. and besides, there could be legitimate reasons for it being the way it is and the Admiral isn't seeing it for some reason.

Fisher may be right, but I *do not* think it's reasonable to undermine Bradley like this.

Yes, there might be a problem, yes, the Army might be refusing to acknowledge it, but unilaterally acting without any input from the Army would make it look like we don't care what they think, and that we are favouring the Navy to their expense. We do not need an attempted military Coup by the army in the future. Unlikely, now, but better to nip it in the bud by being reasonable.

Worrying about a coup is a bit far!

It's more that this is very much Fisher going behind Bradley's back to the Crown on a subject that is very much her professional responsibility, and he is openly saying that, "The Army insists this is fine, but obviously *I* as a high and mighty Navy officer know better than those ignorant troglodytes do."
