-----

The fighting on Nouvelle Picardie has intensified in the last several weeks as additional RCTs arrive on the planet, reinforcing your forces and allowing you to increase the pressure. By the end of November you have pretty much uncontested control over the countryside, while the Ducal forces retain control of the cities themselves for the moment. The battle has now effectively become a series of interlocking sieges, which you have sufficient forces for.

The RRF is continuing to troll the living hell out of the Duc, which serves quite nicely to keep the fulminating rants coming from his HQ bunker interesting while whittling away at the enemies morale and simultaneously boosting your own.

The ‘interviews’ with ‘traumatized’ sheep and goats were a nice one, in your opinion. The RRF managed to rope some actual embedded journalists into the shenanigans, interestingly enough said journalists work for that one media mogul on New Eden you’ve been concerned about and watching.

You could do without Periphery Studies joining in the madness, but they’ve evidently been inspired by these ‘interviews’ to Save Our Sheep, marching around in what they evidently quite fondly believe to be ‘traditional’ shepherds costumes and carrying signs of questionable taste, or even coherence.

A small Black Steel raiding force hits Arvum, led by a pair of Black Lions and several dozen of their smaller destroyer designs the attackers manage to inflict some damage on the orbital defenses before being driven off without accomplishing much more than that. Repairs are in progress. You do take some parasite losses in the engagement.

A week later the instincts of your admiralty are put to the test as another raid strikes Bohren, right as the Admiralty expected. The Grand Fleet had been deployed for this one.

Unfortunately you do take more losses this time, but in the process repel the attack without damage to civilian infrastructure. Five of your Prinz Eugen-class Heavy Cruisers are outright destroyed, with another 15 taking extensive damage requiring them to spend significant time in the repair docks. You’ve also lost over a dozen Fubuki-class destroyers and two dozen Lyr-class Corvettes. In exchange you destroyed several Black Steel battleships and escorts. Unfortunately you suffered a number of ‘golden BB’ hits early on, analysis shows that they truly were a pair of freak one in a trillion shots that were unreasonably lucky.

You grit your teeth over the losses, consoling yourself with the knowledge that in a few short years you’ll start having true battleline units of your own and, God willing, will be able to truly take the fight to the Black Steel rather than simply reacting to their punches.

Fortunately the PR fallout of the corruption scandal is overshadowed by the public reactions to the victories at Bohren and Arvum. It’s still a hit, but funding has been allocated to the expansion of the IGMP, easing the blow somewhat by making it obvious that the Crown is indeed handling the issue without trying to cast blame.

Kamoto Mito has accepted your request to serve as Foreign Minister, but does caution that he considers himself a caretaker due to his age and desire to retire in the near future. He’s promised you a minimum of ten years of service, however.

You go over the paperwork concerning the new factories that are coming online across the Empire. Ten additional wings of ASFs a year is nothing to sneeze at, and the growing number of logistics factories is showing some benefits already in reducing the burden of military sustainment and logistical support. The new shipyards are a further boon to the Empire, increasing your production capacity significantly.

The Bureau of Colonization reports favorably on the establishment of four new colonies for the Empire, both to the galactic Northeast and Southwest. Further surveys following their founding have discovered additional mineral deposits, raising the economic outlook for them quite nicely. The freed slaves are proving to be very enthusiastic.

You do get reports from General Messerschmidt, according to him the Rouges Noir had contact with the pirates and would supply dissidents to the pirates in payment for raw materials. Yet another reason to eventually crush that group of radicals.

You read the reports from the Interior Ministry concerning economic activities within the Empire. It appears that the targeted investments and foci have yielded precisely the sort of results that you intended, giving boosts to multiple system economies and improving the foundational infrastructure and industrial matrix of others. All in all quite successful in this regards this year.

A great deal of foundational science has been accomplished this year. Nothing fancy, per se, but the more thorough grounding in fundamentals across the board will no doubt yield significant benefits down the road. Of greatest immediate interest is the proposal for more compact versions of the extended-range 8cm laser, based partially on the work done on the more compact and lethal pulse variant.

The mad lads of DoME have finished a number of projects. Firstly, they’ve completed the expansion of the Shin Tōkyō arcology complexes, allowing for population expansion as well as boosting the local economy across the board. There are proposals to make it standard practice to continue repeating this project until the city planet is fully developed.

Terraforming work on Bāṛi, Pieklo, Awha, Iskra, and Kaiyo has been completed, significantly boosting the local ecosystems and making all five worlds more congenial for human habitation. Of particular interest is Pieklo, which no longer requires any significant terraforming support for its population. As such it will be rated as a Core world next year.

I would like to draw your attention to Nubifragio. Where in a rare case absolutely nothing happened. Nothing good or bad occurred during this year. No improvement or damage of the system took place.

Rainfall was completely average, grass grew at a median rate, and paint dried at the exact time labeled on the paint can. The year was a rock solid “I have no feelings one way or the other” in Nubifragio’s calendar.

Turn 106 - The Sun Goes Down, The Night Rolls In

Fighting on Nouvelle Picardie is intensifying as the sieges grind onward, with attempts to break out by several Ducal formations being beaten back by heavy artillery and massed firepower. At this point the original combat doctrine is showing that it has utility, in the right circumstances, but is not universal. One thing that is quickly evident is that in the heavy formations, as opposed to assault or medium ones, the artillery elements are required to be too close to the action thanks to the limited range of the Arrow-IV system, and while the assault artillery mechs are tough enough to weather fire for some time and the medium ones have the mobility to retreat before contact, the heavy ones are caught betwixt and between. The Ballista lacks the mobility of the Ritsa while also lacking the sheer toughness of the Trebuchet.

Additionally there are comments about placing the artillery in turrets in your SPGs. Under sustained bombardment the turret rings are showing signs of excessive fatigue, moreover the turret assemblies are not being used very much as most crews limit traverse to a roughly 90 degree angle to the front due to the excessive recoil of the massive cannon.

In terms of logistics, the Hyper-Assault Gauss, while a truly devastating weapon system, is consuming far too much ammunition, limiting the effectiveness of units equipped with them even when they possess ammunition stores that for any other weapon would be considered generous. Combat reports praise the sheer lethality, but that lethality cannot be sustained. This is far less of a problem for major units, such as dropships on up, and even ASFs gain greater benefit from the weapon system thanks to the short, sharp engagements that they specialize in.

The Merkava X assault tank is the only platform that seems to be using the Hyper Assault Gauss effectively in the ground role, and that is primarily because it has an extended range PPC to act as the main gun, with the HAG only used once a decisive shot can be made. The smaller Patton, as well as the Griffon assault mech, are far less flexible and thus the logistics nightmare is made much worse for those platforms.

The RRF has also been sending in commentary about their equipment, with many of the complaints focusing on the Blitzpanzer, alleging that the little hovercraft are, in their words, ‘inadequate to needs’. Evidently at the speeds they are traveling at a single pilot, even with VI assistance, is unable to make full use of the LRM rack, and the little hovertank is so fragile that a single hit is detonating the ammunition, which even with CASE is still a death sentence for the pilot. Technicians in the field have taken to removing the LRM rack and ammunition, then replacing the 5cm extended range laser with one of the new advanced pulse variants, the remaining ton is usually just left empty, but they’ve proposed several depot level refits which would, shockingly, finally give those tiny hovertanks enough protection to no longer be rated as ‘fragile’.

There are other reports as well, mostly fairly neutral. Analysis of the effectiveness of battle armor against dug-in infantry with heavy weapons support, again pointing out the issues with the need for ammunition resupply for the anti-personnel gauss rifles that are your infantry’s staple weapon. However it is also noted that the measures already in place for that issue have been working quite well, with a few minor tweaks recommended. They do recommend phasing out the medium suits and upgrading the heavy suits to be better suited for extended combat operations, with an energy weapon main armament and extra ammunition for the short range missile packs.

The Black Steel continue with light probing attacks, although none are decisive with no losses on either side for the first several months of the year. The frequency has dropped, which some analysts believe indicates that the Black Steel might be moving their nearest base further back and that the probes are an effort to protect that movement. Sadly for you, you don’t know exactly where to look in the first place, with at least three systems being candidates for the base. It’s buying you some breathing room, although it does indicate that the Black Steel are more than capable of long term strategic thinking rather than the murder hobo image many seem to have of them.

Speaking of hobos, the esteemed tenured faculty of the Department of Periphery Studies has decided that this is the Year Of The Hobo, and as such are all dressing the part, and filing multiple complaints that there aren’t convenient freight trains rumbling through Griffsport for them to hitch rides on. For some undecipherable reason they’ve all also taken up playing the banjo, with a depressingly and painfully low standard of skill. Every grifftiger in the city has put in priority requests for earplugs.

The ongoing investigation into the corruption scandal is revealing the slimy fingers of organized crime one by one, with the Special Branch taking great glee in rooting them out for the IGMP to arrest. Buoyed by the recent budget increases, the IGMP is reporting that they’ve managed to bring their operational coverage back up to an adequate level, although they do note that any further expansion of the Empire will require further expansion.

Your eldest is doing quite well at her new school, which you are quite happy about. Your second daughter, on the other hand, is practically begging you to be allowed to attend St. Trinians. Considering that she’s the one who gets into the most mischief with the family’s pack of raptors, as well as the one whom the oldest palace staff reminds them the most of your great-aunt Thanh… you are not that surprised.

I have to say that I don't like Gauss that much myself. It's a wonderful weapon, but for me logistic is everything. You can have the best weapon, but if you don't have enough ammo, it doesn't help. PPC and lasers, PPC and lasers..... and some autocannons and missiles, that's all I need. But especially PPC and Laser. Especially PPC. All the PPC!

It's not our heir, should be fine!
Need I remind you of how we started this quest by having our entire family line nearly die out to the point an infantrywoman got put in charge. That being said, we might need an ambassador for the crazies.

The only thing the Royal Family lacks to have the full collection of jobs are spy and diplomat so let's collect one of them.

for the record. Since everyone else was apparently voting for something I know is stupid. I just went with the flow even if I didn't agree with it. but since others are voting No. I am changing my vote to my original vote which I still think and know is the best one. IE don't send children to an insane Asylum
