You get a message back from the diplomatic delegation sent to the Masters of Ikea. They report that they have more or less succeeded at their mission, that the Masters hadn’t realized just how harmful their dumping their inventory could be and promised to regularize pricing to fit the market segment that they were aiming for.

They’ve also asked for your assistance in helping them open trade routes to the NRR, NRI, Bourbons, and the Crimson Storm. You authorize the Foreign Ministry to initiate contacts on their behalf with those other powers, including sending a small delegation down to the designated meeting point with the Crimson Storm.

There’s a bit of excitement at Nya Kopenhamn when the Black Pumpernickels make an appearance with their usual ‘dramatic’ flair, declaring that they were claiming the system in order to hold the Jellicle Ball to send a Jellicle Cat to the Heaviside Layer. You have to consult with your great-aunt before realizing that this is yet another bit of musical theater from the ancient past and they are putting on a performance of something called ‘Cats’. You send them a message that so long as they hold their next Jellicle Ball in the Griffon System, as the Eldest is intrigued by the concept, they have your permission to put on a show.

You get an immediate response thanking you, delivered by an actress dressed up like a cat in very heavy cat makeup and talking with a rather affected British accent.

You love the Black Pumpernickels, they are so much fun to have around, even if they hate notifying you in advance as to when they are showing up which causes traffic control to have such terrible headaches.

Your R&D teams have been very busy, and you spend an entire week going from presentation to presentation about their results. Demonstrations of the fancy new extended range PPC mixed with demos of the new, more compact heat sinks and the fancy new electronics dominate the week, along with in depth presentations about the advances made in power distribution topologies that go well over your head as they are incredibly geeky and geared towards specialists in that field.

You also have a number of meetings with Admiral Fisher, who is still looking rather more worn and haggard than you are happy with seeing him.

“OK, we’ve got our first designs, for a true battlecruiser intended for expeditionary work like we’re doing in Nouvelle Picardie, and a true battleship intended to stand and fight in the line of battle against a peer opponent while also providing highly capable pin-point orbital fire support to ground forces thanks to a trio of Class 40 naval autocannons.” He says, bringing up an image showing a pair of ships, one looking lean and sleek, the other looking like a quite chonky boy indeed.

“The primary difference is speed and focus, the Dreadnought is relatively slow, with a maximum acceleration of 1.5g, has only 8 docking collars, a small small-craft complement, and is focused on pounding the enemy while taking a pounding in return. The Jean Bart has a nearly completely energy-based armament centered around heavy naval PPCs, is capable of up to 3g sustained acceleration, has 24 docking collars and supports 2 wings of ASFs, while being fully optimized for independent operation.”

He checks his notes. “The Dreadnought has shorter ‘legs’ than the Jean Bart, being on the low end of the range of acceptable life support and crew amenities that we consider acceptable for a Naval vessel. The Jean Bart is significantly better in this regard, coming in closer to the high end of the range. We expect that the crews will complain regardless and claim that I’m somehow hating them, but I’ve come to expect that and would be worried if they didn’t.”

“We’ve also come up with a replacement for the Canopus-class, intended as a dedicated anti-dropship parasite battleship to do to the Black Steel’s drone dropships what our Fleet Defense Wings do to their ASFs.”

The Interior Ministry, along with your Political teams and Justice Ministry are a bit exhausted, but feeling quite triumphant. Despite some unexpected challenges in Platzregensburg system all five of the new colonies have been properly established, extending your frontiers rather nicely. System defenses have been constructed, including Black Tower-stations.

A large number of new shipyards, both for dropships of various kinds as well as for larger vessels, have been completed and are now ready to help your continuously expanding fleet expand faster, hopefully fast enough to meet the next Black Steel offensive on even terms, unless you are fortunate enough to find their base and knock them back again.

The new factory zones and infrastructure improvements have had salutary effects on the economic potential of the Kaiyo, Grand View and Nox systems, allowing those formerly poor systems to be redesignated as ‘Average’ in terms of economic potential.

Overall, economic investment and foci have been quite successful across the board, although New Castor was another source of annoyance for the Interior Ministry due to a number of unexpected paperwork snafus. It did all eventually work out, just with a bit more drama than expected.

Ground forces, Aerospace forces, and the Navy all continue to expand explosively this year. General Bradley informs you that they are waiting for a comprehensive examination of the Nouvelle Picardie operation before finalizing any new Mech designs, the ability for your tanks to be easily reconfigured is proving to be an enormous advantage, one that the General is hoping to extend to mechs as soon as possible.

DoME teams have completed a comprehensive survey of the Venenatus system, with an unfortunately high number of injuries and even some fatalities despite all involved remaining within armored vehicles and mechs. The wildlife and plantlife on the planet is that dangerous. They have identified a number of potential methods for handling the wildlife and several others for dealing with the plantlife, but the end result would be the same in either case, the near extirpation of the current ecosystem and its replacement with one more congenial to humanity. The current flora and fauna are simply far too aggressive, venomous, and lethal for any form of coexistence. Even isolating them to a single continent would be ineffective due to the amphibious nature of most of the worst of the creatures.

Occasionally spouting nonsense
Congratulations on the 5 new systems everyone. For context, one more expansion turn like that and we can reach about 1/3rd of the size of the Cappellan Confederation when it had 160 systems in 3075, the weakest Inner Sphere House at one of its weakest stable points.

And that is with the FASA brakes on. Now with Sunhawk removing those; we might be running high on our success, but we should definitely keep in mind how small we are compared to the great houses

As the Picarde campaign demonstrated, high tech mechs and tanks can be countered by good tactics and a lot of experience. Say what you will of the Inner Sphere, but they have centuries of experience in ground and space combat and a far, far larger manpower pool and production base without FASA holding them back.

So let us not make the same mistake the Clans did and try to stand toe-to-toe with or worse try to steamroll 5 superpowers each dwarfing our relatively tiny nation. Tech, caution, and secrecy are our best friends when we finally reach them.

and picking up a ally or two will help a lot. like say the taurians and canopians

maybe we should set off a new department to carry our exploration and surveys so as to ensure we have more worlds for expansion as we are still way too small by inner sphere standards to matter as a power , like we could call it the griffin house expedition hall and its intrepid captains could be called pathfinders , we could even develop a new ship type to accommodate their needs being build around long expeditions away from home , with plenty survey gear and a mobile HPG so they could call home when they need to report something major

in game play terms every few turns a random number of systems would get surveyed and explored by the new department

Turn 104 - Make Us Worthy, Make Us Proud

You and your great-aunt spend an amusing several hours together going over this Cats-thing before the Black Pumpernickels arrive in the Griffon system. So of course when they inquire if they can speak with Macavity you cheekily inform them that he’s not there. Which leads into a hilarious back and forth on the subject with the final conclusion being that surely Macavity must be hiding somewhere, but he’s obviously not where you’re looking, so they’ll be sending the Rumpus Cat after him.

When they arrive on planet for the show the Eldest is in attendance, and gives the shenanigans a very amused consideration before bestowing a Lick Of Approval upon the actors and actresses involved. You have to admit, you were a bit put off by the premise of people pretending to be cats, but in the end it did work in a strange and enjoyable way.

Your daughter will be attending high school next year, and as is traditional in your family you make arrangements for her to attend a nearby public school. Also as per tradition it is not the same one you attended, nor is it in a particularly affluent part of town. If a high school in a poor neighborhood in Griffsport isn’t good enough for the Heir to the throne, then obviously there’s something wrong with the schools and something will Need To Be Done. Fortunately, you have every confidence that the school chosen will be just as good as the one you went to as a girl.

Granted, you met Tiberius in high school, and look how that turned out.

The fighting on Nouvelle Picardie is continuing in the same stalemated manner. Fortunately the improved configurations for your combat vehicles are proving very useful, so the pace of operations is gradually improving in your favor. An experimental company of prototype urban combat mechs has been sent for field evaluation. A particular standout is the Indomitable Armor Works Pontianak medium mech, which has proven particularly lethal against Ducal anti-mech infantry thanks to the four Antipersonnel Mines fitted to the external surfaces of the legs which have been shown to be absolutely lethal versus the swarm tactics typically used by those units.

General Fitzpatrick is requesting the deployment of the 1st RRF Division to the Nouvelle Picardie theater, intending to use the rapid reaction force to perform raids on Ducal supply lines and logistics facilities. Since the ‘good’ Duc has placed these facilities within residential areas, oftentimes right inside of schools, hospitals, and other targets that would be PR goldmines for him if you were to attack them with airpower, the General proposes using the unique talents of the RRF and their penchant for pulling off crazy stunts to make the Duc regret his life choices.

[]ActionResult
[]Send in the RRF and may God have mercy on the Duc’s soul
  • The 1st RRF Division is deployed
  • The QM gets to rub his hands together and cackle while writing about their shenanigans.
[]We do not condone such crimes against humanity as unleashing the RRF, or at least crimes against good taste and sanity
  • Think about the kittens!

A company in the Raj system which was involved in operating an Endosteel orbital refinery stumbled upon a true Eureka Moment when a minor industrial accident resulted in some pure lucky serendipity. A clumsy worker made a mistake, causing the foamed Endosteel to be adulterated by a chemical cocktail intended for zero-g cleaning… and to everybody's surprise the batch of Endosteel that resulted from the accident fully met all stress, strain and load requirements for a normal batch, but at almost half the cross-sectional volume as it didn’t foam up nearly as much as normal.

More controlled experiments eventually hit upon a replicable formula and process for the more compact structural material, allowing for Mechs to have all of the benefits of an Endosteel skeleton without as much internal volume being consumed by the material. This process has already been implemented throughout the Empire to a broadly enthusiastic reception.

Calliope, New Phoenix, New Castor and Kainga are all experiencing a surge in economic growth this year as the new shipping contracts with the Masters of Ikea result in massive orders from their commercial shipyards to meet demand. This increased demand is expected to last for several years and yield some impressive economic gains in those core systems.

On the other hand Edelsteine is experiencing a slowdown in overall growth as a consequence of shifting demand for various products produced in the system, as well as price drops on certain gemstones as fashions shift. It is hoped that this will be a temporary setback, and Elizabeth Lee assures you that the Interior Ministry is monitoring the situation closely.

There’s been an uptick in crime, mostly non-violent, across the Empire as the IGMP finds itself overstretched and forced into a more reactive mode. The local system law enforcement groups are so far picking up the slack, but the situation is starting to become an issue that will soon require Imperial intervention.

Final repairs have been completed on those Grand Fleet units which were still in repair yard hands after the Battle of Bohren. There have been no Black Steel sightings, although a number of nuisance pirate attacks have occurred on shipping in the Platzregensburg system. Local forces have been quite successful at dealing with the annoyance, but it is a concern. The types of ships in use are identical to the sorts used by the piratical scum who’d long been a thorn in the NRI’s side.

A major labor dispute in the Griff’s Leap system has resulted in some trade disruption as the local dockworkers go on strike over pay and benefits. The union’s demands are fairly excessive, in your opinion, but it appears to be more a starting point for negotiation. The local system government is handling the situation at the moment, but there is a slight slowdown in economic growth in the system as a consequence.

The Olympics have begun in the Nova Roma system, with appropriate fanfare. You’ve sent your eldest off with your husband to represent the Griffon Empire at the games, much to your daughter's obvious delight. You rather enjoy watching them, although it’s somewhat less visceral watching it on HD rather than in person. Team Griffon seems to be as dominant as usual, although the Romans and Rasalhaguians are doing quite well as well. Team Bourbon has some major holes in it due to no athletes from Nouvelle Picardie being involved for obvious reasons.
