Chapter 1: Teaser

Clutching her M4A1 assault rifle, boots pounding on muddy, hard-packed dirt road that still managed to slip under her feet on occasion, Lieutenant Paige Jentzsch of Stargate Command Team Four sprinted on in rising desperation.

Downpour spotted her face, mixing in with grime and sweat. She'd lost her cap in the fighting, and the drizzle of rain that was coming down with an almost stinging ferocity had soaked her short black hair through. Though it wouldn't have mattered if she had kept it. The persistent drizzle had ensured the rest of her clothing, a green United States Air Force Battle Dress Uniform, wasn't doing much better at keeping her dry at this point either.

All of this was hardly on Lieutenant Jentzsch's mind of course. She had more important things to worry about than a little water right now.

Before her, Paige Jentzsch could see a handful of refugees fleeing from the fighting. Even in the storm and the gloom of dusk, Paige could easily see the massive, stone pyramid that sat in the city's center, rising far above the low, crude homes of its inhabitants like a redwood tree among saplings. Modeled after a Cheops-class warship's appearance, it had once been the center of Goa'uld power of this world. Then the pyramid had been turned into the palace of the 'godslayer' Pyrus, before becoming that of his daughter and the current ruler, Shyla.

Now it was one of the last defensible places in the city.

Around her, in unseen parts of the city, she could hear the shouts and screams of panicking humans, the distinctive zoom-zap of Ma'tok staffs, and the occasional rattle of an Earth-assault rifle mixed in with the attacker's weapons. Sometimes it was distant; other times, maybe only a street or two over.

Behind her, the enemy kept coming. What they lacked in sprinting speed, they made up for in a tireless and unwavering pursuit.

As if to drive this point home, there was a series of strange, warbling chirps. At this odd, yet now all-too-familiar sound of weapon's fire, Paige jerked herself to the side. Less than half a heartbeat later, several blue-green bolts of energy hissed through the air, close enough that she could have brushed them with a sleeve.

Now running forward again, Paige caught sight of a figure making his way through the small crowd of refugees ahead of her. He wore heavy boots, a tunic that looked like chain mail covered by a broad, flat collar, and a skirt that looked like a kilt. He carried a six-foot thick-headed staff, holding it by a grip in the middle. A closer inspection however would reveal that the Ma'tok staff was a weapon of surprising complexity, capable of spitting bolts of energy from one tip at the push of a button halfway down their length.

Despite his armor, the man wasn't actually a Jaffa under the service of a Goa'uld. But one of the city's guards merely using the weapons and armor of the Jaffa. The same armor that had necessitated that the various Stargate teams switched to armor-piercing rounds in order to more effectively down a Jaffa.

The Not-Jaffa, having managed to get clear of the crowd, leveled his staff weapon. No doubt aiming past Paige at the silver figures that were following behind her, marching inexorably towards them like a machine. The blast leaped out with a zoom-zap, its golden-yellow bolt cracking as it raced towards its target.

Thankfully, it didn't come anywhere close to Paige, but she also couldn't be sure if it had hit. The silver figures didn't seem to feel pain or cry out unless fatally wounded.

Paige whirled around, firing off a burst of gunfire at the dimly glimpsed silver figures. Then turned to run once more. Again, she heard the warble-chirp sound the enemy's energy weapon's made. Again, she jinked to the side to try and avoid a bolt of energy.

Only this time it hadn't been aimed at her.

The not-Jaffa fell, his armor useless against the blue-green bolt. Energy, like that of a Goa'uld Zat'nik'tel hit, crackled across his body. The staff weapon fired again as his fingers reflexively contracted. The ensuing bolt plowed through the air, smacking into a wall, blowing a chunk out of it with a thunderous clap and a puff of smoke.

The young lieutenant cursed weakly, then regretted it. She didn't have much breath to spare. Instead, Paige pushed herself to run with renewed energy. Even as she stumbled on, passing where the Not-Jaffa had fallen and drawing closer to the fleeing civilians, a part of her still reeled under how abruptly everything had gone so spectacularly downhill.

The attack had struck without even the slightest hint of a warning. Sure, SG-4 had heard people talking about the 'falling star' that had flashed overhead two nights ago. But they'd had no reason to suspect it was anything other than a meteorite.

Not that it mattered, what with the enemy having rolled over the defenders with the steady, inexorable strength of an ocean tide coming in. They'd done their best to withdraw and regroup, to wage some sort of fighting retreat. But it had crumbled under the attacker's relentless assault. Paige wasn't even certain how much of SG-4 was still out there fighting.

And any notion about trying to reach the Stargate had been quickly discarded. It was five miles from the city but might as well have been on the other side of the planet, thanks to the cordon the attackers had thrown up.

Even as all this flashed through her mind, she glanced backward in time to see a glowing blue-green orb, smaller than a baseball, arcing through the air towards her and the civilians.

There was no chance to shout any sort of warning. Whipping around, Paige threw herself through the doorway of one of the crude houses that lined the street. Behind her, there was a flash of that blue-green light and a high-pitched whine.

Then she was through and scrambling to pick herself up off the dirt floor. At the same time, her mind was racing.

While she hadn't planned it, this could be an opportunity. As much as she despised the idea of leaving behind her teammates and the people of this city behind to their fate, it was clear to her that they were unlikely to hold out until the SGC sent a team to investigate.

The best option now was for her to hide in here until the enemy soldiers had passed. Though, looking around the bare, one-room house, Paige doubted she'd stay here long. Her gaze flickered across the crude fire pit in the middle of the room, the simple furniture and boxes.

The young lieutenant blew a bead of water away as it threatened to drip into her eye, sting the sensitive organ and distract her. Moving to lean against the wall, Paige made her decision.

There was no way for her to really hide if the attackers decided to search the place. She'd just have to hope they hadn't seen her dive in here. Once the enemy had passed, she'd move on to somewhere else, try to make her way out of the city. Maybe once she got a better look around, she could figure out a way to slip through any enemies still outside the city.

At any rate, she reckoned that a single person stood a better chance of getting through than the gaggle of civilians she'd seen trying to run out of the city soon after the attack had kicked off. At any rate, she had to at least try and alert Stargate Command and get help.

Peering with one around the doorway, she saw the two-dozen or so civilians were splayed out on the ground, having collapsed where they were. She bit her lip, knowing there was nothing she could do for them now. A quiet mechanical whirling, almost inaudible over the quiet patter of drizzle caught her attention. It was growing louder. As were what could only be an almost equally subtle clank of footsteps.

She could only watch with unease as a silver figure made its way into her view, somewhat stiffly walking down the center of the road. Another of the silver creatures, this one closer to the far side of the road, soon appeared as well. They were picking their way through the fallen Terellans when the third showed up.

Paige did her best to stand very, very still and quiet. It was only a handful of feet away from her. It must have been trailing somewhat behind the others, for it had stopped at only a short distance into her view.

Despite herself, she couldn't help but stare at the tall silver figure standing in the drizzle and gloom. It was like a man but obviously not a man. In fact, her first impression was that of a grotesque suit of armor.

Parts of its torso and legs were completely covered by a strange, silver material that almost looked like some sort of synthetic fabric. By contrast, its head, forearms, lower legs, feet, and powerful, five-fingered hands were armored. Completely encased in what looked like metal plates the same dull silver color as the rest of its body. Its broad shoulders were likewise hidden beneath a segmented armored covering, a broad collar much like that of Jaffa warriors.

Speaking of which, its gauntlet-like hands held what could only be a gun of some sort. A smooth, almost organic-looking device. Nevertheless, it looked far more like the weapons of Earth than those of the Goa'uld System Lords. Beneath what Paige could only assume was the main gun barrel, she could see another. She didn't have to be a brainiac to figure out that it was probably something like a grenade launcher. Likely the same sort which had launched the glowing orb that'd downed those civilians only a short while ago.

Moving her gaze back upwards, Paige found that the creature's face was just as strange, if not more so, than its body.

Two cold, faintly glowing red eyes stared out of a blank metal face that seemed almost a gaunt parody of a human's. The cheeks were sunken in, while the mouth was set in an unmoving grim scowl. From the sides of the head, a pair of ridged, boxy shapes protruded. Attached to these in place of ears were two strange handle-like projections. Also silver, these turned out, then upwards and inwards to meet at a sort of crest above the figure's forehead. Protruding from that crest was a short barrel-like shape that looked suspiciously like another weapon.

As the creature began to turn, its compassionless gaze began moving towards her, Paige ducked back. Then, her left shoulder almost brushing the wall, she began taking several slow, careful steps backward, away from the doorway.

It was only when she’d gone a short distance back that her wet and muddy boots caused her to trip over a simple broom.

She had almost no time to realize what was happening before she was falling. Paige hit the floor, an unwilling yell of pain forcing itself past her lips, her head slamming against the side of a wooden chest. It was enough to make her see stars. By some minor miracle though, she hadn't let go of her rifle.

For a moment she lay stunned on her back, then despite the pain, the young lieutenant was forcing herself to her feet. But as she did, a silver fist punched through the wall. Paige yelled in surprise and stumbled away.

Wide-eyed, she saw the silver creature effortlessly tear its way through the wall with hand and rifle-butt, forcing its way inside in a shower of wood and plaster. At this distance, it towered over the now-standing human by at least a foot.

By then, Paige had managed to snap the butt of her M4A1 assault rifle to her shoulder and pulled the trigger. The muzzle flashed and the gun kicked, its energy flowing into her shoulder as she unleashed a burst gunfire at point-blank range. Sparks flew from the silver creature’s chest armor as the impacts of 5.70 mm millimeter armor-piercing rounds made it rock back.

But only for a moment. It leveled its gun and fired.

Paige heard to shot only after she felt its effects. A sharp, hot sensation built in her chest, circled to encompass her torso and erupted into a roiling ball of electric pain. Her muscles seemed to vibrate like plucked strings.

The young lieutenant felt herself pitching helplessly forward, but darkness took her before she hit the floor.

What I like about this, is that it reads a bit like a slasher film. It reminds me of the first Predator movie, basically. There's a fuckload of tension and even the SGC with all its experience seems to be partially blind sided. The Cybermen hit this world like a bunch of juggernauts raring for some new blood and it was really well executed.

I take it the weapon that killed the Cyberman was anti replicator tech?

Sounds like Mike Tucker's proposed Illegal Alien cyberman design.

From what I saw, the only weapons used were Ma'tok staves and M4A1 assault rifles and neither of them were enough firepower to actually disable, let alone kill the cyberman. And the cyberman's gun, which was probably something designed to stun rather than kill, or at least, kill while inflicting minimal damage for convenient recycling of the corpse. Not sure if cybermen can actually convert fresh corpses or if they need living victims, it varied depending on the canon and how technologically advanced the particular cyber-civilization in question was.

Not quite. I was going for the design used in the Real Time audio/web serial. Admittedly, it's a somewhat obscure version compared to others, but I'm quite fond of it.

Thank you! That means a ton to me. :) And that pretty much was what I was going for. I confess I was heavily inspired by Terminator and its sequel when writing the Cybermen in action. Not to mention some of the classic Cybermen stories like the Invasion and Earthshock; though classic Doctor Who is a bit of an aquired taste at times.

As for the replicator gun, no. This is set during season 3, so late 1999 or early 2000. The SGC hasn't even encountered the legos from hell that are the Replicators yet.

Plus, I doubt the anti-replicator gun would work on them anyway. As, if memory serves me right, it was designed to disrupt the connection of the replicator 'blocks'. Something the Cybermen don't use.

I think I misread that part then, but there was a part where it seemed like a Cyberman went down. Whoops

It got staggered by sustained gunfire, but got back up. Fits with canon, cybermen have consistently been bulletproof, even the early series ones with flexible bodysuits rather than armored exoskeletons.

@Bassoe is quite correct here in terms of what happened, the cybermen's duribility and how much damage they can take before going down. That said, I did throw in a line about how 'The silver figures didn't seem to feel pain or cry out unless fatally wounded.'. So that might be what @The Immortal Watch Dog was thinking about. Alternatively, I might just need to write more clearly when it comes to describing the scenes.

As for if the Cybermen's gun's were set on kill and if they can convert corpses...

:devilish:

Come now, do you really think I'd give that away?

Corpse converting Cybermen are a phenomenally disturbing concept. Phenomenally disturbing..whether you go with this or not.

I really must read more!

Its rare to see well executed action horror no matter who is doing the creating. It was an awesome first chapter.
