They were waching them to learn. It is bad when they cant even get the USN to leave. The opposite would not have happend
China knows what happens to nations that sink US ships.

That's why they keep pushing the grey zone, so they can try to get what they want without pushing to the point of causing open conflict.

I'm rather surprised Japan and the US have not simply stopped allowing Chinese nationals to buy land in Japan, particularly near our military bases. Kinda seems like a bit of an oversight to me.

US has no real power in Japan

That doesn't really explain why Tokyo would allow these Chinese linked land sales near critical installations.

Like, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to think that Chinese nationals might not actually be 'civies' and that they are trying to do in Japan what they've done all over the South Pacific and Indian Ocean with cloistered 'ex-pat' communities near damn near every vital strategic location.

I mean I guess letting these land purchases go through could be a double bluff to trick or deceive Chinese agents that use them for recon purposes, or a way to have some idea where enemy agents could be easily found in the event of conflict.

They know what happens when someone sinks our ships.
There were two world wars about it
And a war with Spain, and the War of 1812 was mostly related to the UK bullying us at sea, the Quasi War with France, the Barbary War, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident caused the massive upscaling of the US intervention in Vietnam. We've had more wars start because of stuff happening to our ships than any other cause.

Yeah, but remember what happened at the end of 1812?

We burned the White House and turned it into the "slightly charred and now somewhat Black" House

Plus the whole impressment of the sailors thing was being negotiated and USA actually had to hurry with the declaration of war so they could still use it as excuse casus belli.
To be fair with communication times being what they were in 1812 we kinda declared war when the British as far as Congress knew weren't exactly negotiating in good faith

GGWP America. China ain't playing around when it comes to their military training!

Okay... I'll bite. What could be the military utility of this form of torture training?
