And of course it was the minor celebrity athlete we got back, who actually committed the crime she was accused of, and not the retired US military veteran they've had locked for years who did nothing wrong.
From what I've heard that's entirely because the Russian side has for some reason decided to treat their fake espionage charges against him very, very seriously. My only qualm is that perhaps they should have not offered such a high value prisoner in exchange without getting the other guy.

I'm fine with trading a dude towards the end of his sentence to free US citizens, I'm just cynically aware that it was the celebrity connected member of two protected classes that got traded. She is more important to American elites than any of the other Americans wrongfully imprisoned in Russia and that speaks volumes to me.

It's the celebrity part which secured her release. My daughters are members of three protected classes - female, asian, and black - and know that daddy can't "take care of" anything worse than a traffic violation.

Off topic: Wondering how Biden is handling the news of Sinema switching political parties by becoming an Independent?

NEVER a fan of Griner. I would've left Griner there in Russia and got Whelan back home instead!

How? If the deal to get some random female athlete with dreamt up drug charges was this lop sided, what do you think they're asking for the former marine accused of espionage?

They asked for Bout, reportedly ( according to Bolton, so IDK if I trust him). Trump had a deal where he could have traded Bout for Whelan, and refused it.

Like don't get me wrong, I'm happy Griner is out. I'm don't care that Bout is out (he sold guns to us too, all he was was a gun dealer, and I don't really have an objection with that any more than I'd have with the Kalashnikov Concern). I'd rather have traded for the Marine, but it's something at least.

Hopefully this can lead to direct pressure on the Biden admin to legalize weed. Biden traded a gun runner on the grounds that weed possession is not a crime, surely we can do the same for the thousands incarcerated at home?

Their willingness to trade may well have changed with the evolving circumstances, but if it was a direct choice between the two I would agree to that the government had some greater duty of care to the former marine and also greater cause to worry about his future given the different "crimes" so should have bought him home instead.
